The expanding DCU slate continues to take shape, and James Gunn is offering new details on one of the most intriguing projects in development. While fans have been anticipating a Jimmy Olsen spin-off series, the DC Studios co-head recently clarified that the show is intended to be a dual-lead production featuring the iconic Daily Planet photographer and the super-intelligent primate villain, Gorilla Grodd.
A Dual-Focus DCU Series
Gunn took to social media to address the project, emphasizing that the show was always conceived as a partnership between the two characters. He pushed back against rumors suggesting the series began as a solo Jimmy Olsen project that later pivoted to include the villain. According to Gunn, the concept of a Jimmy Olsen and Gorilla Grodd show was part of his initial pitch for the DCU before he officially took the helm at the studio.
He described the series as one of his favorite projects currently in development and confirmed that production is slated to begin soon. This approach aligns with the broader strategy of the new DC universe, which aims to explore various corners of the comic book lore beyond the primary Superman narrative.
Expanding the DC Universe
The character of Jimmy Olsen, played by Skyler Gisondo, made his debut in the recent Superman film. As the DCU moves forward, the studio is balancing major tentpole releases with character-driven television projects. While the Jimmy Olsen series prepares for production, the studio is also looking ahead to the sequel Man of Tomorrow, which is currently scheduled for a July 9, 2027, release.
Gunn has previously teased that Man of Tomorrow will feature a complex dynamic between Superman and Lex Luthor as they face a significant threat. By integrating smaller-scale stories like the Jimmy Olsen and Gorilla Grodd series alongside these major cinematic events, the DCU is clearly attempting to build a more textured and interconnected world for fans.
