Could Iron Man 2 Break the Boxoffice Opening Weekend Record?

Seems the stats geniuses that track public opinion and predict boxoffice say that reactions are trending well for Iron Man 2. While that might not be big news considering the broad appeal of the film, what is interesting is that if the stats reflect boxoffice, Iron Man 2 could potentially beat the Biggest Openning Weekend Record.

JoBlo reports:

According to the LA Times, just-released tracking surveys show that IRON MAN 2 is pulling in some off-the-charts numbers that prove it might just be able to take the cake. They claim “astonishing levels of interest and awareness” about the film and not just among slap happy fanboys. Women in their 20s and 30s are tracking surprisingly high for the film, a surprise for a FX-driven superhero film.

Spiderman 3 had a $151m opening, which was dethroned by The Dark Knight at $158m.

And we wonder why Hollywood wants to make nearly every comic book into a feature film lately? Marvel was pretty smart to start their own studio as this trend of viable Superhero films is not going anywhere soon.

Do you think Iron Man 2 could break the record?

I know I will be there opening weekend.

  1. I dont know everyone in the entire world but i do know lots of people are stoked about Iron Man 2. I wouldnt be surprised if i broke the record for openeing weekend record, i just know its a movie that appeals to more than a set audience. For instance, i dont personally enjoy comic books or superhero type themes, but after i saw Iron man i fell in love with Tony Stark. I cant wait for Iron Man 2 and i dont doubt this movie to be a huge hit the second its released in theatres.

  2. I dont know if it will break The Dark Knights record but it will be close. I think there is a different crowd for Iron Man 2 than there was for TDK. Iron Man man bring in more of the younger female crowd but TDK had more of the older crime-thriller crowd. Judging by the numbers of what Iron Man took in vs. Batman Begins and projecting that forward being that the interest is similar for the sequels, maybe Iron Man 2 will break the record. I will be there too.

  3. I have no doubt Iron man 2 will be more satisfactory the first, it’s panned out to be more exciting and more action packed and with the introduction of the big movie names such as Mickey Rourke and Scarlett Johansson i believe the star studded cast will really help it along.
It will come close to breaking The dark knights record but i think it will just miss out.
The unfortunate death of Heath Ledger just before the release date of The dark knight boosted it’s opening weekend, i know it sounds awful but it is true.
Spiderman is a much more famous super hero than Iron man and if he couldn’t do then it is going to take a huge effort from all involved with Iron man 2 so im saying no.

    1. Ohhhh! I thought when you said 800 million worldwide, you meant in the rest of the world. My bad.

Yeah, I think that’s about right……but considering how any movie that’s been hyped (for all the good reasons, no doubt) seems to cross the billion dollar mark, I guess billion is the new 100 million.

I’m skeptical but I wouldn’t be altogether surprised.

  4. No I dont think Iron Man 2 will beat The Dark Knight’s record. The death of Heath Ledger and his amazing performance were added contributions which is why more people went to see it. Dont get me wrong, that movie was amazing all around and still would have gotten great opening weekend box office numbers. Either way Iron Man 2 will do very well opening weekend.

    1. I don’t remember the number but I do remember that it snowed pretty badly or something like that in the US so Avatar’s first weekend was not that great.

    2. Yeah, according to BoxOfficeMojo, Avatar ranks 29th all-time on opening weekends (it made $77MM). Federico is right, the snow storms were terrible up east, and that really muted its total.

I don’t think Iron Man 2 will break The Dark Knight’s record by the way. Should come really close though.
