Guy Ritchie to Direct Lobo

I can’t wait to see the nerdrage over this news. Guy Ritchie has signed on to direct LOBO.

For those of you unfamiliar, Lobo is the badass cigar smoking super strong, nigh invulnerable space biker bounty hunter of the DC Universe. Never heard of him? Well unless you are a die hard comic reader, you probably havent. If you are a die hard, you might not care.

Obsessed with Film reports:

the movie will be a special effects heavy PG-13 and not the hard R rating you would think a faithful (and successful) adaptation of Lobo would need. Are we to blame Watchmen’s sudden drop off in audience figures and final $185 million worldwide taking?

And then there’s the news that Guy Ritchie – he of Lock Stock, Snatch, Revolver and Rock N’Rolla fame – will direct.

Now let me predict the fanboy nerdrage here:

Lobo needs to be rated R Wrong.

Lets remember that Lobo in the comic books, that was so badass, so violent and socially inappropriate does so using words like “Fraggin Bastich” and all of this is presented in a comic book that you don’t have to be 18 to buy. If they could illustrate how dark and serious the Joker is in a PG13 film, I am sure they could do it with Lobo.

My biggest contention with Lobo is also my only hope for the film.

The character is flimsy. He has no story. He is a badass who kicks ass. Punch, kick, big Michael Bay explosion. Roll credits.

So this is my only hope for the character. To make him look badass with a PG13 will require storytelling and effective visuals. So with any luck the writers will actually come up with something remotely interesting and we could have a good film here.

If I don’t see some glimmers of that, Lobo won’t make my viewing list. The character is completely devoid of appeal for me.

  1. NO! please!? They cant be serious … this isn’t happening *sob*

Somebody should frägg all the people involved in this mess …
This movie will fail harder than Mario Bros and Streetfighter together…
    MARK MY WORDS DC!!

    ich geh grillen …

  2. Is this going to be another “The Mask”? Because anybody who has read the original Mask comics knows that it, like Lobo, also played on satirising the ultra-violent comics of the day with a wholly unsympathetic psychopath anti-hero. And the movie, although reasonably okay, had to swap goofy antics in place of the ultra-violence to make the pg-13 grade.

So will we get a comedy Lobo played by Mike Myers or Jack Black? I’d say thats pretty damn likely.

  3. I actually think the PG-13 rating is a good thing. In the comics, the writers used violence a lot as a crutch in place of actual storytelling.

This will hopefully force the people behind the film to rely on the story instead of over-the-top gore and violence.

  4. Very cool. Guy Ritchie is awesome, Snatch is one of my all time favorite movies. I can totally see him doing a Lobo movie and making it awesome. Be great if he makes it an action dark comedy.

As for it already being set in stone to have a PG-13 rating. That’s fine and all, I don’t think a Lobo movie HAS to be rated R to be any good. What does bother me is when they decide ahead of time what type of rating a movie is going to have. I like to be surprised with ratings personally. But, that’s just me. And also I like it better when they just make a movie and run with it, and whatever rating it gets is whatever rating it gets.

But one more thing about the whole rating deal, the comment that guy made about thinking they reason Lobo will be PG-13 is because of Watchmen. I hope that’s NOT true. I mean ya, Watchmen didn’t make as much money as WB wanted, but still, it was a great movie. Being that it was R rated might have had some effect on it’s ticket sales, but really I think it just wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea. You can’t make a movie that everyone will like, no matter what. Blade was R rated and it did really well.

    1. They decided ahead of time that it would be PG13 because thats where the money is. If they make it rated R they reduce their demographic of ticket buyers.

It is in part because of Watchmen. They made the movie and let the rating go where it may, and it limited the market that would go see it.

Blade would have made MORE money if it was pg13. It was the rating that kept more tickets from being sold.

      Its always about ticket sales.

      1. Well, that’s true, but it’s still pretty awesome how well Blade did do for an R rated comic book movie. And I think it was only the 2nd one ever made. The first being The Crow.

I understand it’s all for more money, it’s always been that way, and will never change. It’s just that it’s a shame that just because Watchmen didn’t make a killing that it may be some times before we see another R rated comic book movie from WB, and possibly never again. When done right, R rated comic book movies can be amazing.

Oh well, at least there are others out there still willing to take the risk. Can’t wait to see Kick-Ass.

  5. It would be nice for Ritchie to hold off and see how successful holmes is, then use that momentum to create the next part in his rocknrolla trilogy, that movie was fantastic and the ending was so ambiguous, it left me wanting more!

  6. Okay.

    Question:

How come Green Hornet, Wanted, Kick-Ass, Lobo and The Losers re getting movies yet Aquaman and The Flash are literally dead??

    I mean….really?

Aquaman could be made into the next breakthrough of CGI. Aquaman in my opinion is full of story and amazing characters, and with great CGI it could be made into nothing less then a masterpiece.
Kinda like what The Matrix was in 2000 or what Transformers was in 06
Aquaman could be what Avatar wont be.

But no, DC wants to make piece of shit Lobo.

    1. DC’s lesser known properties seem to be having less problems getting into development.

Properties like The Flash (which I really hope makes it onto the big screen soon) are in development hell. I believe Aquaman IS being planned.

    2. Thats because I personally love Moonknight.

I think you should stop picking on me for that Rdney, you know hes my favorite character and you know how I feel about this already.

I love the the fact that he peels people’s faces off and think that Moon Knight would be badass movie. But never in front of The Flash and Aquaman.

You missed the point of my comment completely.

    3. I think Deadman and Lobo getting the go-ahead is probably a good sign. When Marvel started getting films made of their characters, they kicked it off with Blade, a virtual unknown. Once it did well, it opened the door for more characters.

Often the lesser known characters are easier to make into a successful, popular film for the exact thing Rodney describes as a drawback; they don’t have an extremely well established character. The writer and director can create something, and has a lot more room to move.

  7. Very promising. You don’t need an R rating to show insane violence, just boobs and language (how backwards is that?) so I think it could be great. Guy Ritchie has a good style for this that I feel will only add to it.

  8. Lobo is from DC comics.

Even though I think Guy Ritchie hasn’t made anything notable since Snatch, I think Lobo is actually PERFECT for his style. His mastery of dark and violent comedy fits to a tee with him.

With this, and Deadman, I hope WB and DC are finally going to get the ball rolling on their comic book film franchises.

    1. anything notable since Snatch? You’re kidding right? Did you see Rock N Rolla? Before he did that did you see Revolver? I personally think those two films are very high in his notable resume of movies. Watch them if you haven’t and then tell me he hasn’t done anything good since Snatch.

    2. Rock-n-Rola and Revolver both sucked. What else has he done? Swept Away? That was notable for all the wrong reasons. He hasn’t reached the heights of his early career with Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch.

  9. Outside of Swept Away I have liked every Guy Ritchie movie I have seen. Very stylized and enjoyable, for me anyway. I have faith in him and curiosity is piqued on what he will do with a project like this. That said, seams as of recent trends now for movies to get unique interesting directors signed on to only have them drop out months later, which then results in them finding somebody a little less interesting and cheaper to fill the spot. So let us see if he sticks this out and is the director in the end.
