Director of Pathfinder and New Friday The 13th To Direct New Conan Movie

I do not like this news at all! Seriously, I would have prefered if Brett Ratner was still directing the new Conan. No… seriously.

As many of you know, it was announced last week that Brett Ratner would no longer be helming the new Conan the Barbarian remake, and many people rejoiced at the news. Well… put the party hats away. They’ve replaced him with Marcus Nispel, who most recently directed the Friday the 13th remake and the absolutely horrible “Pathfinder”.

I have a one word question…. WHY!?!?!?!

Our friends over at CHUD give us this:

This moves Conan into the next gear; the movie looked like it might stall when Brett Ratner, who had been developing it for Millenium for some time, backed out of the project. The company still wanted to shoot as early as this summer, but without a director or a star things looked rough for the production. Now that Nispel is on board things can get back to moving forward, although I don’t know if an August start date is still in the cards. We should be getting an announcement on just who is playing the Barbarian himself soon, though. I’ve been hearing that an unknown will be the way Millenium and Lionsgate go.

Now, Friday the 13th wasn’t totally crap. It actually has it’s moments… but at the same time it’s not actually all that good (aside from the scenes with America Olivo that is). And Pathfinder was… well… I already mentioned it.

I never thought I’d hear myself say this… but man I wish Brett Ratner was still directing this.

  1. So, i know i’m in the SUPER minority here, but… i think this is a great idea.

Consider the source material. Conan, to me, will always be about gore, fantastic visuals, and breasts, and that’s about it. having read the original works of fiction my opinion is unchanged: Frank Frazetta’s the only truly amazing thing about Conan.

Nispel’s made three remakes, the first was engaging but inferior to the original, the second was shit, just like the original, and the third remake was, well, my favorite in the series proper (the original 13 is so different i barely count it), so that’s a 1-1-1 track record as far as i am concerned. but the horror remakes were all very tense, thrilling, well shot movies with a great eye for…gore and tits.

see, this guy’s perfect. it’s not like Conan has the potential to be life changing, the material’s just not that good. all we can ask for is one hell of a ride, and i think this guy can do that just fine.

    1. exactly how i feal about it…take it for a ride and see if u like it…i wont say i loved pathfinder but hell im not a fanboy for firefly yet i like pathfinder way better then serenity.

  2. LOL, “I never thought I’d hear myself say this… but man I wish Brett Ratner was still directing this.”

Really though, I don’t think either of these guy should direct it. Seems to me the studio is hardly trying at all to find a good director, they are just trying to get who ever is available at the time to get it made as fast as they can.

Well, that’s it, the deed is done. There’s nothing we can do about it now but cross our fingers and hope it might actually, by some miracle, turn out good.

  3. Pathfinder was terrible, absolutely awful, it didnt even feel like a film, it was more like one of those crapppy shows like beastmaster.

Should be looking at a director like Chuck Russell or Stephen Sommers (although sommers is busy with bigger projects atm).

Connan is a massive film, I wish they would treat it like that, instead they bring onboard crap.

    1. well not like the original conans had some awe inspiring cinematography….it looked like beast master yet with arnold and wilt the stilt.

  4. Yea he should be DP or he has a grate DP and that is why his films looks good. His shots are look grate.
As jason stabs the Asian guy he is something else maybe 21

  5. he made one of the most boring friday the 13th films ever made. and that is saying something.

the guy has a nice visual eye but his films are ll very boring and lifeless.

  6. To put things into a perspective. The Texas Chainsaw remake wasn’t great. Pathfinder was a disappointment AND a mess. Friday was alright…but as far as the recent remake slashers go, My Bloody Valentine directed by Patrick Lussier was ten times better, which was released a month before the Friday remake.

I don’t think Nispel is horrible, but so far I haven’t seen anything that makes him stand out.

    1. could it be the scripts? i mean wtf did u expect from pathfinder…..aliens land with vikings….not like it was a winning concept from the begining.

  7. i liked pathfinder for what it was….and friday the 13th wasnt bad…..have you seen the original one? wasnt that fucking scarry…..sometimes its funny to hear peoples opinions on things.

  8. I was probably one of the few people that actually liked Pathfinder so I am encouraged by this. Pathfinder was kinda a complicated script in the sense that you had two different cultures you were trying to deal with at the same time. He seemed to pull it off ok and I know it could have been better, but I was satisfied with it. I wasn’t always convinced that Karl Urban was the right guy for that role, so lets hope that they choose the correct actor for Conan!

    Bring on the Cimmerian!

    1. I would have to agree with you on that, I thought Pathfinder was kinda fun. And I think the director did a decent job of making the Vikings seem very foreign and otherworldly, I think this will be much better than if Ratner had done it.

  9. Well maybe third times a charm? I think he is getting better with each film when you think about it. Pathfinder was poor, Friday was OK, and so logic would presume that Conan would may turn ok well.

  10. I think Marcus Nispel is a pretty talented director. Pathfinder and TCM are loaded with style, so I think he’s a fine choice. Much better than bland Brett Ratner.
