More Photo Updates From The Anniversary

Hey there guys. This won’t be of interest to most of you, but for those who have been following the development of my little movie, here are the next set of photo updates from the last couple of days of shooting.

Today was especially tough since we had a pretty key outdoor scene and the weather here in the Los Angeles area was NOT cooperating with us very much at all. Cold and wet don’t work too well… but somehow we made it through. Anyway… here are the pics:

  1. Hey John I’m currently in film school and what your doing is truly amazing and I hope everything is going well. I’m curious about the Red camera you are using. What kinds of problems are you running into, if any? Also any hands info you can give me on the camera would be greatly appreciated. I know you’ve got a lot of work to do with long days and all so good luck and keep doing what your doing

  2. John, how did you get this whole thing together, i’m asking because this is something i’m very interested in and always been. I love hearing people’s success stories with indie filmmaking and their process to get there. You got a lot of high placed people in there such as Robert Sanchez, the kid from Shock, all this equipment. On top of that your running TMB out of your own pocket now, that’s gotta be something man, how do you manage? Your quite organized let me tell you, because you’ve been in LA for a few months am i right? I’ve read some horrible stories of people going there and either it takes them forever or they can’t make it and have to come back with their tale between their legs. This is a very personal issue to me as i plan on going down there, but i need to be as ready as i can. Sadly i don’t run anything like TMB, if only!
    You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want but i’m really intrigued and interested by this.

  3. Low budget filmmaking? With a red camera, several actors with resumes, a steadi cam operator, a script supervisor, etc? Sure that’s low budget compared to the big guys, but maybe you should have a look at Rebel Without a Crew, if you want to see low budget filmmaking. No, I’d say you’re very blessed to have such amenities given to you with no real prior experience, sir.

    1. Hey Pardon,

      Oh trust me… this is low budget by anyone’s definition. The good thing here is that because I have some amazing friends who are willing to help out for next to nothing, and mine and Robert’s connections and resourcefulness… we’re able to do this movie for WWAAAYYYY under what SAG calls an “Ultra Low Budget” movie.

      I figure if anyone else was doing this movie the exact same way we’re doing it with the exact same equipment and people it would probably cost about $250k. I’m very lucky to have some great relationships here that allow me to do this for a fraction of that.

      Basically, low budget filmmaking (regardless of how low your budget is) is about making the very most out of the limited amount of money you have… and being resourceful.

      I’m just doing the best I can with the help of some great people. Will the end result be amazing? Maybe, maybe not… that’ll be up to other people to decide.

  4. John , is this a one time deal for you or will this the beginning of a new career ? If the movie because a succes , would you leave the movie blog.

    1. Hey Kevin,

      I’m not sure. To be totally honest directing isn’t my dream. I’m only directing this because I really liked my script and this was the only way to really get it on screen.

      After we’re done, I’ll have to sit back and decide how much I enjoyed directing… and if I was any good at it or not.

    1. Erin is simply amazing. You’d have to be in a room with her to understand. She has the presence of a goddess. I know that sounds weird… but you’d have to be in the room to get it.

  5. Oh great, you can afford a steadicam operator, but you have the AD booming, can’t wait to HEAR this one.

    I bet the video tap costs twice as much as the sound recording box. ;)

    1. Oh… and Ed’s regular full time gig is as a boom operator. He and Andrew (the sound mixer) are a great team. Andrew’s sound gear is worth more than the Red camera we’re using.

      Yup, it works. I mean sure, if you want to throw an extra $5k my way I’d love to have 2 separate guys… do you have an extra $5k around?

      Low budget film making takes some sacrifices. That’s one of them.

    3. Yeah I know, I hear it all the time, especially when they’re begging me to fix their sound for nothing in post :)

      All joking aside, you guys have a real boom op and sound guy which is a step above the others, good job.

    4. Hey Nick,

      Yeah, sound is one of the places I didn’t want to go cheap on. The sound quality is more important than the image quality IMO. However, that meant we had to make sacrifices in other areas. I guess I’ll have to wait till it’s all edited to really know if I made the right choices.

  6. John I expect you to be in shorts since you’re from Canada! And I wish you brought me on as a PA I would have been free for you! As in pay me nothing! Just to be there when your directing cherry was popped would have been worth it!
