John Cena In Predator 3?

John-Cena-PredatorAnyone who has read The Movie Blog for any period of time knows that I HATE HATE HATE it when non-actors (singers usually) get leading roles in movies… you know… instead of getting someone who has trained in the craft of acting for most of their lives or at least years and years… thus giving us better movies to enjoy. But screw it, put 50 Cent in. I HATE that.

Well the same goes for wrestlers. Don’t get me wrong, having a non-acting celeb in a small role can bring some cool novelty to a film (like Keith Richards in Pirates of the Caribbean 3 as Jack’s dad). That can be ok from time to time. Even give a lead role to someone other than a real actor if the role is mostly silent (Like Triple H in a new Conan movie). But for goodness sake, don’t give “famous” people roles that real actors should be filling just because they’re fricking famous.

Now there is some rumbling around recently that WWE Wrestler John Cena may get considered for a new Predator. WHAT??? Come one… that’s lame as hell. The only thing decent about “The Marine” was that it taught us that Cena is indeed a non-actor and can’t act worth crap. I don’t care how popular he is, keep him out of this movie!!!! (via)

  1. Yeah,don’t ruin a great franchaise like Predator,with putting a non-actor in it,Cena is a great wrestler,Predator films are legenary,they don’t mix

  2. ok are you serious…the only lame brain i see is the one dissing on someone who DOES do acting as a career…id love to see you do what he does. You would be crying to your mommy by the end of the night. You have your opinion but sometimes its best if you just shut your lame brain mouth.

  3. Am I to understand that wrestling has gone legit and there is no acting involved? I missed out on alot apparently. Now, to me “The Marine” was an-out of the blue-script. However, “Predator” is not. I’m pretty sure they will give it every consideration. I personally didn’t care for Danny Glover as the lead role for P2, but it was an O.K. movie none the less. I say if they think that Cena can do it, let him. There are a few movies that I think could have used someone else for the lead role, but they used who they used. If the movie bombs you’re out what? $7 to $15. The investors of the movie stand to lose a hell of alot more.

  4. i have heard rumors about a predator 3 movie, with john cena possibly starring in it. I THINK IT WOULD ROCK IF HE WAS IN IT!! john cena has been my favorite wrestler for years. he can prevail through anything, even the haters. i did hear him talk about a possible movie in the summer this year, so i hope that works out, it could be p3, hope so. so yeah i would love to see him in another movie, cuz he kicks major A$$!!!!

  5. i think they should base predator 3 in iraq. think of what they could do with that! they wouldn’t know who is killing who and mickey rouke as the main man.
it would have to be good to beat p2 though. very underated film.

  6. Watch: Stone Cold , act

In: The Condemned, It’ s better then Cena’s acting any day.
and watch that trailer and think: Predator 1987… I see a good shot at him fighting the predator… give me a Hell ya.

Somebody needs to write this screenplay and they need to set Stone Cold as a marine , with a bunch of other marines …This time they are hunting the predator… on his hunt… instead of being the hunted ones Make the Predator… the prey.

  7. hey john cena is the best
he can wrestler, act, rap, and do all the shit that he wants
so back off the one’s who hate him and let the professonal people take care of predator3
    cena is the best
i am your number one fan in the middle east
    your hot

  8. the reason it think you people talk very wrongly , to use a polite word, is that AVP WAS a good movie because it brought some story and depth to the whole predator legacy.
Before , anyone not reading the books would not know what the connection was between the aliens , predators and humans..I think AVP WAS A MUST puzzle piece.

I also wich there was more nice action in teh movie , but i guess it mainly involved the story , and how important it is for the predator legacy to see alittle more inside their world.
I must say that seeing the mother alien in action was worth the watching it!
I think it was awsome to see the power of the predator pulling the alien back with the chains, and the brother hood the predator got with the human female in the end ..i cannot deny that it touched me!

BUT AS ALWAYS movie camera type is mostly wrong.. they dont pay attention to cameras these days and viewpoints.

  9. okay, y the hell r yall hating on cena, u need to get a life, he is a good actor, good wrestler, and rapper, so u know wat get a life pplz, and back the fuck off, becuz u guyz r just waisting ur time, its not like any1 like the director would listen to u

  10. well john cena i see you as a singer/rapper a wrestler and a actor cause i love seeing you everywhere and monday night i see monday night raw i love how you wrestler and how you always beat “edge” i don’t like him for sh**. well john see you soon and remember i’m your biggest #1 fan.
    love you,doris arroyo
    by the way your sexy.

  11. I LOVE JOHN CENA!! as a wrestler and a a actor he is amazing i love him… he’s a hell of alot better then any other guy in wrestling for sure.. well keep it up john cena and stop hating on him!!!

  12. And it’s only a huge flaw to you. I thought he did a good job.

I’ll be expecting my 100 examples shortly or can you not even do it regardless of what example I give? If you’re scared to try, just say so.

  13. The Marine made my eyes and ears bleed!!!!
What a brutal waste of an hour and change of my life! The memories are still haunting me on that one.

Vin or Johnson should have this one…doesn’t require much ability in acting and it’s made for a muscle head.

  14. John, I got roll shot gun with you on this one (I agree 100 %),..50 cent can’t spit a decent 16 (rap) if his life was on the line, Real hip-hop junkies don’t got love for him. Now for a hip-hop/movie junkie like my self, 50 in a movie is like “trash in the winter” Cold garbage.
Yo i can’t even believe you watched “the Marine” you definitely took one for team there playa.
But on the real, the Predator franchise is straight garbage, they lost it in Predator 2, not that my man Danny G, was bad, he definitely wasn’t the man for that Role, plus that script was a sure stinker.
Anyway lest hope the WWE guy doesn’t get it and they give it to your boy Vin Diesel,…since his one dimensional and we know he can act a lil, I’d rather watch him then a Wrestler wana be Rapper/Actor

  15. Thos: that bit about the gun from the 1700’s has been part of geekdom for years after the second film. It would be a terrific setup, it would draw curiousity….and Hollywood isn’t as bright as you, me, or anyone else on that matter…

  16. I really like Predator 2. It’s cool how Bill Paxton is in that and Aliens. I was so excited when I first saw Predator 2 that there was an alien skull on the ship. Cool! 14 years, AVP was one of the biggest movie let downs of my life. I know it was going to be garbage as soon as I saw the PG-13 rating. Predator 2 actually set up the movie I want to see for Predator 3; do a 1700s film where a ship/pirate crew gets “shipwrecked” and is hunted. This could be the story on how the elder Pred got the pistol he tossed over to Danny Glover. I think that would be a cool film.

  17. Hey Jay,

Sorry, I have a life and don’t sit in front of my computer 24/7.

Eminem – Sucked ass in 8 mile. Let’s see… a rapper playing his own semi-life story as… get this… a rapper… playing himself. And you want to qualify that as “acting”? I like how you try to upend the obvious flaw in your example by saying “Take the cowards way out”. But it’s the truth. That’s like asking “Why shouldn’t I throw this baby in the fire? And don’t take the cowards way out by saying “because it will burn to death”.

Arnold in Conan. ARE YOU SERIOUS???? True fact… Arnod speaks 7 words in that movie. SEVEN WORDS. They don’t even let him speak at all until the twenty second minute of the movie. ANYONE with the right build could have been Conan in the first film.. because it required no acting whatsoever. AND… as I said in my post: “Even give a lead role to someone other than a real actor if the role is mostly silent (Like Triple H in a new Conan movie)” Arnold got the role because he was Mr. Olymipa and the part required no talent. Even he admits this.

Ice Cube. What movie were you watching???? Boyz was a good movie, but that by default does not automatically mean all the actors in it were good. AND… if you read my post… he wasn’t the lead in the film.

Chris Tucker. Sucked in Friday. AND, if you look into it, Tucker started doing some stage acting and taking classes 5 years before Friday ever happened in 1990, AND appeared in at least 2 other films before that AND was not the lead in the film.

    0 for 4 dude.

    :P

  18. i know this is totally off topic but eragon is getting some brutal reviews…..empire magazine online gave it one star!!

and a couple of other online reviews have said it is terrible….

I just started to look forward to this thing but everything I have read so far has been pretty rough…probably explains the reason the studio has an embargo on early reviews….they are just starting to come through now and it isn’t looking pretty

  19. good point darren…i didn’t realise the problem john had was with non actors being handed out LEAD roles without having earned it.i thought it was with non actors in general

I still don’t have a problem either way myself…I will judge it on the film once it is done but I can see why it could bug someone….musicians making films is hardly a new thing though….

and I think depps first lead role…as in name above the title was Crybaby…i think anyway….came out the same year as scissorhands but i think it was released first….

    anyway – as you were

  20. Jay Warren..

“There were no character actors involved in that movie”…or, who was RG Armstrong?

And why wait for John…? I got some answers right here…

    1) Eminem – 8 Mile

Yes, you are right; he was good in that. Yet he played a loose semi-autobiography of his own rise to fame at best; at worst, he played an up and coming hip hop rap star. That’s like saying Shaq was terrific in “Blue Chips” which is true, but he played a basketball player.

    2) Arnie in Conan.

This falls into my above category ; he was well cast but still acted like a wooden board (not as bad as Cena, though who shows NO facial expression!) in fact, not all of Arnie’s films have been hits prior to Total Recall :Conan II, Red Sonja, Raw Deal) who not only got better as he went along, but managed tosnag good directors, scripts and good supporting actors.

    3) Ice Cube in ‘Boyz N The Hood’

    Yes, good example. Two problems.

First, Ice Cube was not the lead.

Second, The rest of Ice Cube’s films, where he has played the same hoodlum character that he protrays in his gangsta rap image. The one film he does not do this-the wonderful ‘Barbershop’- is explained in Tim Story’s commentary on that film’s DVD. (A debate with the director!) Also note

    4) Chris Tucker in ‘Friday’.

Again, a supporting role. Not to mention the fact that Tucker has NEVER opened a film ALONE. He is either a supporting actor (Fifth Element) or in a buddy film like Rush Hour where he imitates Eddie Murphy.

  21. also…

    Chris Tucker in Friday.

You can say all you want about Tucker (I agree with all of it by the way) but he was solid and frickin’ hilarious in the first Friday movie.

go ahead and make it 400 examples

  22. Eminem – 8 Mile
Arnold Schwarzenegger – Conan the Barbarian
Ice Cube – Boyz in the Hood

    Now, where’s my 300 examples

You can take the cowards way out and say two of them were playing themselves (they were characters and the performances were solid) or you can admit that you were exaggerating for effect.

  23. Nothing against Cena, he’s a good guy. But WWE had to push him down our throats because of his popularity. The guy had decent matches before he got the title and went Hogan on it (I like Hogan, but the “invincible” champ is stale today).

On to this subject, if the guy had a good run in theaters then no-brainer for WWE. But the Marine FLOPPED! Not to mention that the poor guy has to withstand the cheers/boos factor each week (stopped watching wrestling sicne they used the late Eddie Guerrero’s name for angles).

No offense to Cena, but the Alien/Predator/AVP franchises are at risk of being the next Planet of the Apes (I’m sure Campea would agree… the last film was made by Tim Burton, lol).

Even if this is legit (depending on the success of AVP 2), imagine to chaos in Hollywood and WWE if the film bombed. This is a real win/die situation if it happens.

  24. All I have to say is John Cena..what a waste!

I demand Samuel. L Jackson for Predator 3! Why? Wouldn’t you just love to hear him saying “Your one ugly mother fucker”? And hell, they can have it take place on a plane and they can call it..Predators on a Plane!

  25. Let’s be honest…

We all love Conan the Barbarian, right?

I think we can all agree that Oscar voters didnt lose too much sleep agonizing over whether or not to nominate Ah-nold for that one.
The role was mostly physical, right?

Just like most of the roles in the first Predator. Arnold’s inculded.
There were no character actors involved in that movie, but they had a wonderful idea, a fantastic director and a good script.
The idea is still there so that’s not the problem. If they get a director worth his salt and bang out a script that you cant smell the stink of from orbit (like AvP) then I still would be OK with Cena as the lead.

Look at it this way, John. Danny Glover is a better actor that Arnold but Predator was a better movie than Predator 2.
    Why, you ask.
    Better director and better script.

I, too, think Predator 2 is underrated but it’s not as good as the first.

  26. Jay,

I’m not judging his performance in Predator 3 (although I AM judging his performance in The Marine) since I haven’t seen it and we don’t even know for sure if it’s coming or not…

    However…

I AM judging the people who would cast him. Just like I would judge a coach who puts in a 1-8 quarterback with 1 touchdown and 7 interceptions over another quarterback who is 5-5 with 4 touchdowns and 1 interception.

It would be a bad decision on the coaches part, because odds say it his decision won’t work

  27. You’re right, John.

I just refuse to make a judgement on someone before I see what they have to offer.

I’m not argueing the fact that more often than not a trained actor will turn in a better performance than an untrained actor, I’m just saying that I judge after the performance, not before.

And the only scene that I thought he was laughable in was the scene in Billy’s kitchen where the Rock says “I want out. I want my money and I want it now!”. Other than that, I thought he did a decent job.
As a side note, he turned in the best performance in “Be Cool”. And that movie had Travolta, Uma Thurman and Vince Vaughn.

  28. I liked The Rundown… but Rock was horrible in it to the point that it was almost funny. Lucky he didn’t have to talk too much in it.

    Jay Said:

“You never know what kind of natural talent someone has so why judge them beforehand. And training doesnt always guarantee a wonderful performance either.”

Ok, so answer this. Which has a higher chance of turning in a good performance… an experienced and/or trained actor, or someone who is famous for something else?

For every one example you can come up with (I defy anyone to come up with 5) of a non-actor giving a solid performance, I can give you 100 that didn’t.

  29. I, too, refuse to rule somebody out just on that basis.

You never know what kind of natural talent someone has so why judge them beforehand.
And training doesnt always guarantee a wonderful performance either.

That being said, I have also seen “The Marine” and although I thought it was a fun, escapist, forgettable, popcorn movie I have to for the most part agree with Darren’s assessment of Cena’s acting chops. I do, however, think that with the right director and a good script he could be coached into a worthy performance. At least on par with Arnold’s in the first one. Let’s not forget that Arnold had McTeirnen steering his ship. If they got someone of near equal talent to direct and a script at least as good as the first one then I would have little to no problem with Cena as the lead.
If they plan to go the Paul W.S. Anderson/AvP route then no matter what actor they get it’s gonna be a disaster.

On a side note, Please God let AvP 2 be better than AvP 1.
I know that’s probably a fool’s wish but a guy can dream, cant he?

  30. Predator 2 is underrated…great film. … I agree alfie

I have to say I’m not to fused about trained actors especially in a genre piece like this, some are great but some have that horrible “trained actor” vibe, I don’t mind non actors getting a shot, maybe they should get supporting roles first though.

Predator was not exactly a movie packed with trained acting talent, it was all about machismo. Arnie was a former body builder; Jesse Ventura was former a wrestler and Carl Weathers a former football player and the movie ruled despite of their non acting starts.

That said I can’t say I would be excited to see John Cena in such a role and if he was that bad in The Marine (I have no intention of watching it, so will take your word for it) then he should be given a suporting role at best and not the lead in a much loved franchise.

  31. Hey Alfie,

I see where you’re coming from… the problem with your example is that Johnny Depp wasn’t always the actor he is now. He didn’t walk on set one day and someone suddenly said “Let’s give this guy a lead role in a major motion picture”. He got experience first… over time and years he evolved as an actor to the point where they gave him a lead.

I have no problem with that… by that point he’s put years into acting.

Ricky Martin wants to be an actor? Starts small and does it for a number of dedicated years until he gets to the point where he can actually act decently and someone THEN decides to give him a lead? I’m fine with that.

  32. not every actor has trained for years and years…not every actor we know went to drama school and paid their dues…johnny depp wasn’t a drama student or a struggling theatre actor when he started….he was a musician whose band failed…. then it was suggested he try acting and he started going to auditions and became who he is…

lots of good successful actors have been discovered purely by chance without having studied acting…..why rule somebody out just because they haven’t struggled or trained…..

    I don’t care if they cast a musician, wrestler or a zookeeper….
as long as they don’t suck – sure most musicians do suck but hell if you get a chance to do something like star in a film why the hell not….

i see where you are coming from….it just doesn’t bother me the way it does you I guess…..

  33. I don’t know if John can answer this, but I think I got an answer for Washington and Genger. Can I give it a shot?

    *The script/shooting script
    *The director
*the supporting cast (ie. real actors) happen to be good.

Miss anything? Well, would it surprise anyone that those three things happened to be absent in Cena’s “Marine”?

“They Live” , “Rundown” and Rock’s recent “Gridiron Gang” have the above requirements. Also it should be said Piper and especially Johnson have a certian charisma on camera.
All other “wrestlers” who have lead roles have been in turkeys. It’s one thing if they are in supporting roles (most notably Jesse Ventura from the first ‘Predator’) but as one of the unfortunate souls who was duped into seeing Marine (relax; it was a second run theater; bargain 2 dollar matinee and I had to kill time in the mall, but still…) let’s make this simple. John Cena can’t act.

    NOW
let’s suppose we are reading this the wrong way and CEna isn’t the “hero”, but he’s in fact, The new PREDATOR.

All he has to say is “Over here…Shit Happens”

    :)

  34. im a HUGE Predator fan and I feel it would be a disaster to stick Cena in P3. They already ruined the AvsP movie, the AvsP novels/books would of made an excellent movie imo.

  35. This goes back to the argument of what sells a movie. Is it how good the actors are. Or do you need a public figure that’s really popular.

But when it comes to movies like “Predator” it really doesn’t matter who will play in it. It’s never going higher than a cheap rental or a TV broadcast to me.

  36. why on earth would you cheapen such a great character like the predator this way? Aliens Vs Predator was bad enough and now this??

    Predator 2 is underrated…great film.

  37. As much as I have no clue about wrestling anymore, from what I recall, the wrestlers, while being 95% athlete, they do have to be able to stick to a “plot-line” and at least have some tiny shred of competent improv skills. So I could understand that having them act is at least a respectable gamble, albeit not a very safe one.
