The stars of Descendants: Wicked Wonderland recently gathered at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures for the world premiere of the latest entry in the popular franchise. The event featured appearances by cast members including Kylie Cantrall, Malia Baker, Liamani Segura, Brandy, Rita Ora, and Awkwafina.
This fifth installment follows the events of the 2024 film Descendants: The Rise of Red. The story picks up with Red and Chloe as they face the consequences of altering the fabric of time. Set in present-day Wonderland, the plot introduces a new villain, Maddox Hatter, who captures the Queen of Hearts, forcing the protagonists to assemble a new team to save her.
Expanding the Descendants Universe
The Descendants franchise has remained a powerhouse for youth entertainment since its debut in 2015. Previous films have consistently ranked as top-performing cable movies, and the 2024 installment saw significant engagement across both linear and streaming platforms. The continued success of the series has also fueled a wide range of consumer products, including dolls, apparel, and books.
Production and Premiere Details
Kimmy Gatewood directed the new film, working from a script penned by Tamara Chestna alongside Dan Frey and Ru Sommer. The production also features choreography by Emilio Dosal, who returns to bring the franchise signature music and dance sequences to the screen. Fans can watch the premiere on Disney Channel on July 16, with the film arriving on Disney+ the following day.
