Fans of The Passion of the Christ will have a new reason to return to theaters later this year. Lionsgate and Fathom Entertainment have announced that a remastered 4K version of the 2004 film will arrive in theaters on September 10, 2026. Beyond the visual and audio upgrades, the screenings will include an exclusive behind-the-scenes sneak peek at the highly anticipated sequel, The Resurrection of the Christ.
A New Look at a Classic
The upcoming re-release features a new color pass supervised by the original film’s cinematographer, Caleb Deschanel. In addition to the visual restoration, the film will be presented with Dolby Atmos sound. Tickets for the event are scheduled to go on sale online starting July 24, 2026.
The Road to the Sequel
The inclusion of a first look at the sequel serves as a bridge to the next chapter of the story. Directed by Mel Gibson, who also co-wrote the script with Randall Wallace, the two-part project aims to depict the events following the original film. Gibson is producing alongside Bruce Davey, with Cedar Hill and Mike Ilitch Jr. Productions serving as executive producers.
The first installment, The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One, is currently slated for a theatrical release on May 6, 2027. For more information on the upcoming re-release, fans can visit the official Lionsgate website or check local listings.
