The team that brought you the controversial Brokeback Mountain – Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana – are headed back to the Wild West for their next film efforts. In fact they are doing it twice!
Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana, who won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2005, are currently working on two period westerns. The first is titled The Color of Lightning, an adaptation of the Paulette Jiles novel, and is currently set up over at 20th Century Fox with Ridley Scott as the director. The second is a take on the S. C. Gwynne book Empire of the Summer Moon, which will be made by Warner Bros. and directed by Crazy Heart’s Scott Cooper.
This is all good news to me because I just LOVE a good western flick, and we are headed into the thick of it with all these Westerns coming out.
And with the Brokeback team taking on the subject matter, you can bet there will be controversy over the genre that typically portrays Natives negatively.
Man, aren’t we selling them short.
Once upon a time they were known for ‘Lonesome Dove’and those characters in prequel and sequel. Now all they are known for is ‘Brokeback’. Go figure.
BTW, I’d still like to see “Pretty Boy Floyd” get the light of day.
