Weekend Boxoffice Report Nov 5th-7th 2010

I was conflicted as to what might take the boxoffice this weekend but the Squash told me not to underestimate the family friendly film, so I predicted Robert Downey Jr and Zack Galifianakis’ Due Date would fall to number 2 after Megamind, and sure enough that is what happened. I didn’t predict Megamind would haul so much, but it owns the top spot.

Boxoffice Mojo has the estimates:

Megamind – $47,650,000 – Opening
Due Date – $33,500,000 – Opening
For Colored Girls – $20,100,000 – Opening
Red – $8,858,000 – 4wks
Saw 3D – $8,200,000 – 2wks

I like that RED is hanging in there. It seems to have a bit more staying power than Jackass 3D which gives me hope for humanity.

But what surprised me was For Colored Girls. That it landed on the top 5 at all was a surprise. The trailer is a mess of “is there a plot?” but Tyler Perry’s name on anything seems to make it worth attending. It does seem a far stretch from his normal comedic affairs, but still doesn’t interest me. Apparently it interested enough people for a $20m opener.

What did you get around to seeing this weekend.

  1. I actually expected Megamind to gross at least into the mid 50s considering its talent and 3D prices. Still, 47 mil isn’t bad either. Also never doubt Tyler Perry. He has a nice built in fan base.
