Jonah Nolan not Directing Superman Reboot?

International Friend Kalelship tipped me off to a few articles about the Superman Reboot and this one talks about Jonah Nolan, brother and writing partner to Christopher Nolan directing Superman.

Now the rumour is that Jonah’s consideration was the rumour. He apparently isn’t even being considered, but he will still contribute to the writing.

DCWarnerbros.com says

“Jonah was never offered anything, apparently some fans just imagine he may have the talent that his brother has. The WB has not made an official offer to Jonah, he is involved in the script and future treatments to it.”

This part will disappoint some fans:
“As of now David Goyer has a better shot of landing this gig. While in discussions he noted mistakes made in other movies he has directed, this apparently is not a strike against him. To his credit, the WB believes the experience is actually a positive aspect of hiring him. They like that he has worked in this genre in quite a few capacities, and trust that his time with Nolan has also been well spent.”

I actually agree with that sentiment entirely. Those who do not learn from their mistakes are doomed to repeat them. Goyer has recognized his mistakes and could potentially learn from them and hit it out of the park. That is a very strong sentiment there and it builds a lot of confidence in Goyer for me.

Christopher Nolan has been elevated to a rare status in Hollywood. Trust.

Its beyond being a fan and appreciating his work. When Nolan says he picks a certain actor, people don’t question it. They assume he has a plan, and that it will all work out. Most other directors, no matter what kind of reputation they have, if they make a questionable decision its Guilty Until Proven Innocent. Nolan inspires something different than that.

His brother, while a gifted writer has no directing experience. Should we hand him over a massive franchise that if done poorly would bury the character for a long time (otherwise known as the Schumaker Syndrome. See Batman) But rumour reports Nolan says he wants him to do it and people say its fine.

If Nolan said Uwe Boll was directing the next Superman, fans would just say “that’s fine” and assume that Nolan had a talk with him or will be watching closely.

    1. I know Opinions, Opinions. Listen it was a good movie, but it wasn’t a good Superman movie. Yes superman is a God among men, I don’t really think SR captured that, if anything it was about making him more human, he was unsure of who he was and had to got away to get answers, then he comes back to some baby mama drama, Not Godlike. If your gonna spend two or more hours on a Superman movie do you really want to see the human side of him? I could live with it being part of the plot but for the most part I want to see the Blue Guy kick some ass.

  1. I hope this is true. This project needs an *experienced* director, and not someone who’s mentioned only because his *brother* (a reason you shouldn’t take his recommendation seriously) says he would be good. Unlike everyone else, I don’t get excited just b/c Nolan’s name is mentioned.

You can argue “that SR had an experienced director, and that film was crap” (even though I found it to be *brilliant*). However bringing in someone who has had *no* experience in directing would be a fatal mistake. This projects needs someone who knows how to direct, not Jonathatn Nolan.

  2. If they feel Goyer has learned from Chris Nolan then why cant you say the same for Jonah? I would much rather Nolan the younger get a shot at this than Goyer, even if it meant holding off on filming to giive him a crack at a smaller project first…

    1. Goyer admits to learning from his mistakes, not learning from Nolan.

And Goyer IS a director. He can improve his craft as he learns from his mistakes. JNolan has never directed, and its unlikely they would just hand over something this big because his brother is a good director (unless CNolan agreed to be on set to consult all the time)
