Watson and Lerman in Talks for The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Emma Watson and Logan Lerman are in negotiations for the two lead roles in John Malkovich’s adaptation of the novel “The Perks of Being a Wallflower”
The Filmstage shares:

Stephen Chbosky, author of the same-titled novel published in 1999, will be directing from his own script with Lianne Halfon, John Malkovich and Russell Smith producing.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower tells the story of a shy, unpopular teen who assumes the alias “Charlie”, who narrates his life and the happenings of his high school through a series of letters to an anonymous person. The book caused some controversy amongst parents who disliked its frank treatment of some heavy issues including suicide, drugs, and sex. It will be interesting to see how these issues are dealt with in the film and whether they will be just as controversial on screen.

I would be really curious to see Emma Watson as NOT Hermoine. Lerman has already proven to me that he can hold his own and is only going to get better, but since she was 10 Watson has only ever been one character to me.

The story has a little of that “Pump up the Volume” feel to it, as the main character is a quiet loner who expresses himself (dark thoughts and all) through a stage name of sorts.

I am looking forward to seeing what comes of this.

  1. This has been my favorite books since my bf gave it to me for my 16th Birthday. I’m very excited to see it being made into a movie it’s a wish come true lol. Only worry that it won’t stay true to every topic as controversial as they may be. I’m sure Chbosky will stay true to his book at least I hope so. I keep reading how everyone is worried about Emma playing Sam, but I’m excited to see her in this role she’s a great actress I think she can pull it off. I can’t wait to hear the rest of the cast.

  2. great casting. i would have loved to see logan lerman as spidey as he’s much better than other actors mentioned and is a fan favorite but if he’s going to do perks and some other films, his career seems to be on a the fast-track. he’s got a wide range for an actor his age. Emma has the potential to be the most successful among the potter kids and has outdistanced her hp co-stars in popularity. as long as the author is true to the spirit of his original work, this is definitely a must-see film next yr

  3. I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS. Ever since I read the book 7 years ago I’ve been dying for them to make it into a movie. The only thing is, they NEED to keep the story just the way it is, heavy issues and all or kids are going to be very pissed. I think Emma would make a good Sam, I can really see her pulling that off.

    1. I feel EXACTLY the same. The movie would not do the book justice if they glossed over things. The rawness and reality of the book is what I fell in love with, and if they changed or took out any ‘controversial’ subject matter, I’d be very upset.

That being said, this is my absolute favorite book, and I am SO excited to see the movie!!! :D

  4. Emma Watson is consistently the only one who shows any talent out of all the ‘kids’ on Harry Potter (not to say that some of them haven’t done any other good work outside of Harry Potter, just that she’s been the only one who’s delivered any kind of consistent performance inside the franchise). I think she’ll be fine — and it’ll serve her well to get outside of the Hermione Granger mold.

  5. would be nice to see emma watson in a movie that isnt harry potter, & im guessing she would speak with an american accent, so that would be interesting

  6. I read this book when I was in a book club, it kinda made me a little uncomfortable at times with the explicit sexual stuff.

Making it into a film, this one is not something i’d be angry if they adapted loosely.

  7. I remember liking that book when I read it in high school. It seemed very similar to Catcher in the Rye. I hope they keep the edginess, and anything with Emma Watson I would be interested in, just to see if it is Hermoine in different clothes. I remember a few scenes, though that are quite controversial…could be interesting.

  8. If she can pull off an american accent, id like to see them pair up for the reboot of spiderman as young Mary Jane.

I hate the cliche “hot slut whore prostitue bitchgets the smart little nerd. but its okay because shes not shallow and hes very special!!!”

Make her a nice girl like Emma Watson and a genuenly smart kid that seems sharp enough to be a scientist, like Logan.

Great actress, and Logan Lerman has been growing on me VERY QUICKLY.

  9. This is one of my favorite books. I am nervous about it’s adaptation, but with Chbosky directing and writing, I think it will turn out well. I know he only has one directorial credit to his name with “The Four Corners to Nowhere”, but I think he’ll do a good job with this since it’s his own personal work and close to his heart. The casting has always been the tricky part to me. I think the two will do just fine. I’m really curious to whom they will cast for “Patrick”.
