The Movie Blog’s Picks For The New Fantastic Four Cast

With the announcement that Fox if going to reboot the Fantastic Four franchise (a move that I actually think is a pretty good one) I’m sure a lot of us have been thinking (prematurely) about who the studio should cast in the iconic roles. I’m no exception.

I’ve actually thought for a long time about alternative casting for Fantastic Four since I’ve always thought the movies were miscast in the first place (not that all the cast did a bad job… no at all… Thing and Torch were actually pretty good… but still not my first picks for casting).

So now, for your approval and debate, I present to you The Movie Blog’s choices for casting in the new Fantastic Four movie!

DOCTOR DOOM – CHRISTOPH WALTZ

DOOM-WALTZ.jpg

WHY? Some people loved Inglourious Basterds, and some hated it… but almost everyone agreed that the very best element of the film was the fantastic performance of Christoph Waltz as the film’s main antagonist. In my mind he’s perfect for Doom. He can turn on an aura of power very quickly and convincingly. His natural charm is fear inducing… not the mention the guy can just flat out act. For my money, this man is your new Doctor Doom.

WHY NOT? The only thing I can think of is that he’s not a very physically intimidating presence. However, since he’d be in the armor most of the time, that’s not really a huge issue to me.

The runner ups I’d also consider:

ff-David-Moorse.jpgDavid Moorse
In my opinion one of the most talented character actors working in the business today. I’ve always thought it was a shame that he never really had a chance to be a legit leading man. He’s not exactly what I’d “picture” as Doctor Doom… but talent trumps and I’d have no problems putting him in.
ff-Ralf-Moeller.jpgRalf Moeller
You may not recognize the name, but he was Conan on the short lived TV show, and one of Maximus’ allies in prison in “Gladiator”. He is a huge, physically intimidating presence, has a great voice and could scare the hell out of you with just a look. He’d be more of a comic book choice to me, but I’d put him in.
ff-Jurgen-Prochnow.jpgJürgen Prochnow
Best known throughout his career as “that guy from Das Boot”, Prochnow hasn’t done a TON of North American work, but when he does he’s instantly recognizable. Once again, he’d be more of a “characature” pick for Doom, but one I’d be comfortable with.

SUE STORM – YVONNE STRAHOVSKI

SUE-STORMM-STRAH.jpg

WHY? There are three things to consider here. First of all, she just looks the way I’ve always sort of envisioned Sue Storm looking. Maybe a little bit young, but aside from that, when I’ve pictured Sue Storm in my head before, she’s what I’ve seen. Second, she is DYNAMITE to look at. Dear sweet heavens, when I see her I feel like I need private time. But most importantly the girl has game. On TV’s “Chuck” she pulls off sexy and funny and can do physical action as well as Jennifer Gardner ever did on Alias. For these reasons and more, she is EASILY my top pick for Sue Storm.

WHY NOT? As i alluded to earlier, the one knock I have against her in the role right now is age. Grated, she certainly doesn’t come across any younger than Alba, but if she had just a couple of more years I’d call her “perfect”.

The runner ups I’d also consider:

ff-scarlett johansson.jpgScarlett Johansson
When she’s “on”, this woman can push the VA-VOOOOM meter right off the scale. A solid actress with the beauty and sexiness the role calls for. Don’t know if I can really see her doing action though. She may pull it off in Iron Man 2, but I haven’t seen her do any yet.
ff-kristen-bell.jpgKristen Bell
There isn’t a lot I wouldn’t put Sarah Marshall herself in. This girl has it all and I see her getting better and better as an actress all the time. Like Strahovski, I see her as a bit too young. She actually comes across as younger to me. Still… if the above choices weren’t available, I’d put her in without hesitation.

MISTER FANTASTIC – RALPH FIENNES

FANTASTIC-FIENNES.jpg

WHY? For me, whoever plays Mister Fantastic has to first and foremost be a great actor, because as the leader of the team he’ll probably carry as much or more screen time and dialog than any other character in the movie. He also has to be able to pull off slightly nerdy while not quite being a total looser geek (like in the first two movies). He must have a strong side to his mild disposition. Ralph Fiennes meets all these qualities and more. On of the best actors in the business today, I have no doubt he’d make a remarkable Mister Fantastic.

WHY NOT? The only possible potential problem I see could be the accent. He’s have to pull off a totally natural and smooth American accent. Other than that, totally no drawbacks here.

The runner ups I’d also consider:

ff-george_clooney.jpgGeorge Clooney
The last great movie star. I actually think this guy can do very little wrong when it comes to acting and when you go down the checklist I have for what is needed for Mister Fantastic, Clooney meets them all. The one drawback I see with him is age. At this point, I think it might be just a LITTLE bit to old for the role. But still, in the absence of Fiennes, I’d but Clooney in no questions asked.
ff-Zachary Quinto.jpgZachary Quinto
Our beloved Sylar from heroes is an odd choice I know, but one I’m convinced would work. Quinto is a fabulous actor with a load of charisma and would do a great job in the role. He is a bit too young for it, but again, he’d be my third choice.

THE THING – MICHAEL CLARKE DUNCAN

THING-MICHAEL.jpg

WHY? Let’s see… an Oscar nominated actor with that kind of size, physical presence and that voice. This is a no brainer to me, Duncan is the guy. Yes, I also heard the rumor that he might be black… but who cares? Being white or black isn’t an essential part to his character anyway… and besides… he’ll be Orange most of the movie.

WHY NOT? He might almost be TOO big. Not for “Thing”, but for Grimm. Meh, something I think we can all easily overlook.

The runner ups I’d also consider:

ff-adam_baldwin_99.jpgAdam Baldwin
This guy is like Moorse in many ways… just a solid character actor who does an amazing job at it. He’s also a very big man and would make a great Ben Grimm in my opinion.
ff-vin_diesel_16.jpgVin Diesel
Another odd choice… but think about it. He’s got a great voice for it, he’s a very big guy and carries that intimidation factor with it. I’m not a fan of Vin Diesel, but this is actually one role I’d totally put him in if I was in charge of a studio.

THE HUMAN TORCH – CHRIS PINE

TORCH-PINE.jpg

WHY? This guy really impressed me (and a lot of other people) with his performance in Star Trek. He’s got a great maturity about him, but still that side that could completely be Johnny Storm. He’s got the perfect look for it… and he could easily pass himself off as Yvonne Strahovski’s brother. He can do comedy and deeper stuff and action… and… well… he’s my guy for Johnny Storm.

The runner ups I’d also consider:

ff-ryan-reynolds.jpgRyan Reynolds
This almost goes without saying… and is almost too perfect. As a matter of fact, if it wasn’t for the fact that Reynolds is in almost every comic book movie coming out in the next few years, I’d probably put him in my #1 spot for the role. He’d be perfect for it… but it’s too obvious and he’s over used now for the genre. However, if Pine backed out, I’d put him in… overused or not.
ff-Joseph-Gordon-Levitt.jpgJoseph Gordon-Levitt
Just a brilliant emerging talent. Not too happy with his performance in G.I. Joe… but that was a hiccup on an otherwise brilliant career to this point, and he just keeps getting better.

So there you have it folks. My selections for the new fantastic Four cast. I know it’s not filled with big HUGE names, but with this cast I think you’d have the building blocks for a winner. I mean… it wouldn’t mean anything if the script sucked… but at least you’d have the tools to make a good movie out of it.

So start the discussion. How would YOU cast the fantastic Four reboot? And please… for the love of humanity… understand that you CAN NOT bring back the same actors for reboots, so don’t mention Michael Chiklis or Chris Evans please.

  1. I’m not sure FOX should be handling this F.F since they got the first one’s so horribly wrong. Jessica Alba as Sue Storm??? Are you nuts??? Who’s the guy who played Reed Richards?? He sucked whoever he was. I didn’t even like Chris Evans as Johnny. And I like Chris Evans. I’m looking forward to seeing him as Captain America. The only thing I thought worked in the two FOX Fantastic Four movies was Larry Fishburne as the voice of the Silver Surfer. Here’s how the new Fantastic Four should be cast:
    Matthew Fox – Reed Richards
    Elizabeth Banks – Susan Storm
Daniel Craig – Victor Von Doom
Jeffrey Dean Morgan – Ben Grimm
    Ryan Gosling – Johnny Storm

    Any questions?

    1. So in your books if any studio handles a character wrong they should lose the rights to try again?

They are rebooting it. Which means they are not willing to take the current films forward with the current cast. That alone says they see the need for change, which is encouraging.

  2. Write Comment here. Before you do, review these rules:
    1) Stay on topic
    2) Disagree and debate, but no insulting other commenters or the author
    3) off topic messages for the author should be emailed directly, not left as a comment. Guy pierce is absolutely the best choice as Reed Richards. Watch his performance in “The Time Machine”. Christoph waltz is a awsome choice as Doom if not him then I would cast Jeromy Irons and Chris Pine as Jonhnny Storm is Genius!!! I think casting a unknown as Ben Grimm is the way to go. Charlize Theron as Sue Storm would also be great or Naomi Watts.

  3. I totally dug your picks, especially the choices of Yvonne Strahovski, Ralph Fiennes, and Chris Pine. Fresh/new faces. I must say that the ones I can’t imagine being in their respective characters are Kristen Bell and Zachary Quinto. Superficial or not, neither of them possess the right physical appearances that the roles require. Particularly Bell, whose height is far from being convincing as a superhero.

  4. I like your pick for sue storm based on looks alone because i’ve never seen the girl act. i also really like you’re human torch pick…pine would rock at it. however, none of your reed richards are that good and the only one of your ben grimm’s that i thought could work would be vin diesel and only because of his voice. unfortunately i can’t think of any other actors who could be better replacements for these two at the moment but i figured i’d share my two cents.

  5. Okay. This is how I’m going to play this. First, I’ll comment on John’s selections, then some of my own.

    1- Doctor Doom

While I would like Doctor Doom to be a bit more of a threat instead of a great setup only to be tossed aside and wasted opportunity (especially the last film) I also would like to see someone like Mole Man or another FF villain.

But let’s say Doom is the main foe.
John’s choices (his number 1s in caps):

    CHRISTOPH WALTZ
    David Morse
    Ralf Moller
    Jürgen Prochnow

I haven’t seen Basterds (poor me!) but I can’t debate these choices, except for David Morse. He’s one of the most underrated character actors out there, always interesting to watch. But I always held the idea that Doom, being from “Latervia” should have some sort of accent or unique voice. The actor should also have an interesting eyeline. Height is not an issue (like Iron Man, a guy in a metal suit can increase height and mass)

    My choices for Doom:
    Christopher Lambert
    Antonio Bandaras
    Armand Assante
Joaquin Pheonix (if he comes out of retirement and uses a slight Commudus-like voice)

I personally would choose Joaquin, but I’ll bump him because of the question of his semi-acting retirement. I’ll go with Armand Assante

    2- Sue (Storm) Richards

    John selects:
    YVONNE STRAHOVSKI
    Scarlett Johanssen
    Kristen Bell

Truth is, ****anyone**** is better than Jessica Alba. Can’t be any worse. It is impossible. That would be a challenge all in itself. Scarlett is nice, she could very well follow in the footsteps of her significant other with various roles based on comic book/comic strip characters. But I…don’t really see it. Kristen Bell…same reason I’d rule out Reese Witherspoon (I know, I’m nuts) I think she’s too short.

If one of my possible choices for Mr. Fantastic were cast, I’d like Kelly Preston. Maybe Naomi Watts. I’d even root for Cameron Diaz or Charlize Theron. Those were my choices, I favor Watts. However….

John Campea took a damn hammer and pounded in the nail on the spot

Yvonne it is. I wouldn’t mind any of my possibles, but if Yvonne wanted it, Yvonne gets it.

    3- Mr Fantastic

    JC’s choices:
    RALPH FIENNES
    Clooney
    Quinto

I actually could see Ralph’s brother Joseph, but …no. Clooney has sworn off comic book related films due to his turn as Batman. I don’t think Quinto is a good fit. I’m also not too keen on ‘Heroes’ actors being cast in superhero type films. So in my view, Campea’s choices here aren’t the best. Mine aren’t much better in the in’l friends POV either I’m sure. Once again, here they are:

    John Travolta
    Richard Gere
    Jim Caviezel

The problem with Gere is that Gere isn’t interested in science-fiction type films. The closest he got to one was Mothman Prophecies, and that’s about it. Travolta is hit and miss, but I think there is a possibility if asked he’d go for it. Jim wanted to be Supeyman at one point; he might make an interesting Reed.
But after some thought, and I know damn sure it will never happen, and I’m surprised John didn’t mention him, so I’ll add that other name, and (another and) I have made him my number one choice. They’ll NEVER NEVER NEVER get him.

    Russell Crowe
Don’t…kick yourself too much John. Like I said, they’ll NEVER get him.

    3- The Thing

Since, according to the speculation guide, I have to veto past actors, Mike Chikilis is out, even as a voice actor. I’d still hang out a small hope…

    anyway, Campea’s choices:

    MICHAEL CLARKE DUNCAN
    Adam Baldwin
    Vin Diesel

These are not bad choices. Again, race or ethnic background is a non-issue. The Thing is either a dude in a suit or CGI or a combo of both. A guy who is made of hard sandstones. Also, I like all three actors. Now, John’s third choice is most interesting, because a few months back Vin was supposedly trying to lobby for a Marvel Comics character. He is, if I recall, also a huge Silver Surfer fan. If you ask me, if he were offered The Thing, he would take it in a hot minute, depending on schedules.

I would not mind Duncan. I would not mind Baldwin. If Chikilis were replaced (remember: even Judi Dench is still M in the Bond films) then…hey, I’d offer it up to Vin Diesel.

    Other possibles for me:
    Dwyane Johnson

    4 – Human Torch

Having two of the Star Trek actors together would be odd, but overall, many actors work together again and again on many different films. A few examples are George Clooney and Brad Pitt; Sam Jackson and Bruce Willis. Would I consider both Pine and Quinto for FF? No. But I would not rule out Pine in the running for Human Torch. He should be on a consider list.

Indeed, in a previous post one regarding the FF reboot I commented on such recasting. I said “Human Torch: player to be named later”.

    John’s other selections:
    Ryan Reynolds
    Joseph Gordon Hewitt

Now…it would be sort of wacky if Ryan signed on and his spouse became…his …sis..ter…uh…er…holy shit, what a casting coup that would be….no, let’s drop it. It’s too much. Just too much. Sorry.

Anyway, I don’t want Ryan Reynolds to do it. Not to mention he will be Deadpool again in the spinoff. (under Fox). Lousy choice.
Hewitt would be interesting…but I’m not sold. Chris Pine is a strong contender of the bunch.

I said Player to be named later.
I’ll favor Pine………..unless…… Cam Gigandet of Never Back Down and Twilight stepped up. Either one will do. I expect a recent, fresh face.

    There it is.

I refuse to speculate on who plays Mole Man.
Or Alicia Masters, for that matter.

  6. Brilliant choices. I didn’t thought about it before, but if I did I think this would be my exact choices. Except perhaps about Michael Clarke Duncan, I think Adam Baldwin would be the first in line.

  7. Jeff Goldblum as Mr Fantastic anyone who is an even casual viewer of law and order:ci will see that has merit. (John Cusak is another choice)

Elizabeth Banks or Tricia Helfer as Sue Storm both smart funny and could do the role justice.

Michael Chiklis as the Thing lets face it he was the only well cast role in the entire film and it’s not his fault that the script sucked.

The Guy from Pysch dont know his name but he would be good for Johnny Storm

Christoph Waltz or Sean Bean as DR Doom.

  8. Clive Owen for Mr. Fantastic. We already know he can pull off an American accent, so that’s covered. And he’s an amazing actor.

Gretchen Mol, I think, would do well for Sue Storm. I don’t know why. Or Clemence Poesy. But again, there’s the accent thing.

  9. I’m feeling Elizabeth Banks for Sue Storm.

plus I think she could work well with either a younger or older actor playing Mr. Fantastic. depending on the rout they want to go with him.

  10. Bob Sagat as Mr. Fantastic. He is the only tall skinny actor that I can think of. Looking online I think i’d like Thomas Ian Griffith for looks, Liam Neeson, Tim Robbins, there are many many good picks for Mr. Fantastic.

  11. Nice choices, I have seen Yvonne Strahovski’s name mentioned for Sue Storm in other forums related to Comic Books and I have always agreed with that choice. She would be a sensational Sue Storm, and she is dynamite to look at as well.

David Morse is an interesting choice and I was a big fan of his TV series “Hack”. He is a quality actor and often overlooked.

  12. Ok so,
The idea of rebooting F4 is great and I would love to see Sue Storm recasted!!!

Dr. Doom should be Ralph Fiennes, for some reason he just became with his roles in Shindler’s list, Harry Potter, Red Dragon, The Duchess and in Bruges, the maniacal bad guy and would be perfect for Dr. Doom

Yvonne would be brilliant as Storm, not Johansson and Bell definitely fit the bill but how about Amanda Seyfried or Olivia Wilde

    For Mr. Fantastic,
First I agree, a great actor is needed but Fiennes is way too British, George Clooney is way too suave for superhero films ( you forgot Batman and Robin?) I think Campbell Scott could really do the trick or maybe if you want him a bit younger maybe Ewan McGregor

    ok torch,
    my favorite hot young guy,
even if i think Evans was perfect for the role, Pine is a good choice but these two boys are always on a race for the same roles.
Ryan Reynolds is thought of to be casted for every superhero its amazing but he is a bit too old for johhny storm
ok so i found a new kid playing this season in CW”s 90210 his name is trevor donovan he looks the part but acting wise im not sure
    http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1769806/
Staying with the CW Smallville’s Oliver Queen Mr. Justin Hartley could work also

    Thing
Michael Clarke Duncan is big but maybe a bit too big we need bulky not huge
Vinnie Jones who played Juggernaut could work but he might be too tall
    chiklis was perfect!!!

  13. Doom- Agree with Waltz

    Fantastic- Sam Rockwell

Invisible Girl- I like Kristen Bell actually.

Thing- doesn’t matter about size really much like Hulk IMO, but I like Adam Baldwin for sure.

Torch- Gordon Levitt or (god help me) Timberlake…

  14. Now that Disney owns Marvel, here is my sure fire blockbuster cast for the reboot of the Fantastic Four.

    Mr. Fantastic – Zac Efron
    Invisible Girl – Miley Cyrus
The Human Torch – One of the Jonas Brothers
    Thing- Dwayne Johnson
    Dr Doom- Billy Ray Cyrus

  15. Yeah, the biggest age problem is that Reed and Sue are supposed to be a couple, and Fiennes and any of your three Sues are twenty years apart. Also, when I do my fantasy casting, I tend to disqualify those who have previously super-heroed, just in case you want to do a movie with all of them in it.

    How about:

    Dr. Doom: Christopher Eccleston
    Mr. Fantastic: David Tennant
    Invisible Girl: Uma Thurman
    Thing: Tom Arnold
    Torch: Justin Timberlake

    1. I disagree with the age thing. Mr. Fantastic has always seemed quite a bit older than Sue. The white sides of his hair in contrast to the forever blond of her’s. Mr. Fantastic has to be slightly older, thin and tall.

  16. Dr Doom: Aleksander Skarsgaard or Ed Norton

Mr Fantastic: Ralph Fiennes (see Strange Days for American Accent) Viggo Mortensen, Wentworth Miller, or Campbell Scott.

Sue Storm: Julie Benz or Amy Adams

Johnny Storm: 1. Nathan Fillion, 2. Mark Pellegrino, 3. Ben Foster

    The Thing: Jason Statham

  17. Oh and one more thing.

    I dont want Doom again.

F4 has SO MANY villains and Dooms been in it twice. I could name 10 other villains id rather see that arent Doom, S.Surfer or Galactus.
    I could even name 15.

Just, make it interesting, dont bring the same fucking villain back for tripples

  18. I agree with some of the choices. Others I would add are:

Dr. Doom – I can’t improve on these choices

Sue Storm – Amanda Tapping from Stargate SG1. I honestly think this would be the perfect choice.

Reed Richards – I think William H Macy would be a good choice

The Thing – I can’t think of any better choices really

The Human Torch – I wouldn’t mind seeing Nathan Fillion

  19. Excellent choices John, I’ll compare yours to mine:
Dr.Doom-Christopher Waltz, never would’ve thought of that, didn’t see Inglourious Basterds, sounds like a good choice. Haven’t heard of the others.
My choices would be Hugo Weaving

Invisible Woman-Yyvone Strahovski,IDK, Scarlett Johannsen was definitly my first choice, Kristen Bell is a good joice too.

Mr.Fantastic-Ralph Fiennes, don’t think it be a role for him, but adding talent is never a bad thing. Wouldn’t think Cloony,Quinto sounds like a good choice,my choice would be John Cusack.

Thing-Duncan, didn’t think of him, pretty good choice, IDK about Adam Baldwin, why the hell would you consider Vin Diesel? My choice would be Bruce Willis.

Human Torch- Chris Pine, that’s one of those “Robert Downy Jr. as Iron Man” moments, HE’D BE PERFECT,Reynolds would be a good choice, but seriously, does he need 3 superheroes, I’d give it to Bradley Cooper, second to Chris Pine.

  20. Awesome picks Rodney
I especially like the one with MCD playing the Thing and Kirk playing as the torch. Spok would also be perfect for Reed but it would be too Trek-ish with Pine already in it.

But lets face it, as awesome as this post was…NONE of these will come true. Who EVER nails these predictions????
You show me someone that predicted RDjr would be IronMan and I will show you a liar.

And the guy playing Thor? Who thought THAT would be the case? Not me
Same with Tobey Mcwire and Watchmen

Everyone said Keanu Reeves would be Dr Manhattan and Mark Whalberg would be Iron Man.
I even heard rumors that Michael Keaton would play the Joker

Dont get me wrong-I do love these picks, but when they cast it everyone will be like ‘Oh snap, i didnt think about this actor to play this role!”

  21. ok, i say this out of love,..But has anyone here ever READ the Fantastic Four??? and NOT the mess that Millar is churning out. Actually gone back and read some of the classics, ( Kirby era, and Byrne era to name 2 )
seriously, These are GOD awefull choices, God awefull….

    – just please have some INKLING of an idea as to who these characters are, and what they represent.
The FF isn’t ” that hot guy who turns to fire”, “that blonde chick who can turn invisible”, “some big dude made of rocks”, and “some nerd who can stretch”….geeez.

Michael Clark as THE THING??? why because he did such a great job as Kingpin? ( note sarcasm) and don’t get me started with Doctor Doom…..

some of these name makes me understand why good comic movies never get made.

    wow.
sorry, i just had to vent…..

    1. Michael, my friend- I personally believe that the F4 ARE just a Nerd, a strong guy, a blonde and a douche…F4 isnt the deep emotional epic group Watchmen are…theyre just the superhero milionaire F4 group.

Theyre always saving the world from anything ranging from a ferris wheel ride to a planet eating alien. The deepest and most emotional ive ever seen them go is when Reed and Sue almost get a divorce and when Johny goes back to high school. THATS IT.

And sure, MCD is black, but In my opinion, he was GREAT as the kingpin. It woulda been cool to get a white guy, but his character doesnt in any way need to emphesize the color of his skin…unlike Tachala (black panther) or Red Skull…Or HellBoy (hahaha)

I thought those where great picks. And, if youre complaining about this lineup being shallow or superficial, would you say this is worse then Jessica Alba, the guy from The Shield, Nip Tuck Guy and the Jock from “Not Another Teen Movie”?

  22. Dr. Doom: I agree with you 99% John. Moorse just doesn’t seem like the right guy to me.

Sue Storm: Great picks, but don’t forget Sue is a genius, not just a pretty girl.

Mr. Fantastic: Ralph could do it, but everyone else seems too suave, too ‘pretty’. Reed IS a nerd, almost to a fault. But he’s cold and calculating as well.

The Thing: Just no. I don’t think any of these guys could bring forth Ben Grimm. He’s a Yancey Street tough-guy. Typical New-Yorker. I love Duncan, but he doesn’t feel right.

Johnny Storm: Great picks. Reynolds is a given these days. But I like Pine & Gordon-Levitt as well.

  23. john I disagree.

You don’t know fox. Fox is EVIL. They do shit just to piss off people.

    They are doing FF because

    1) Yes they will make money as the first two F4 flicks combined have done over 600M worldwide.
    2) BUT they want to hold onto the rights longer. They simply don’t want to let go of it as they will be left with only 1 big franchise i.e. x-men which will soon get boring.

They know that of daredevil, silver surfer and F4 the best option is to reboot F4 as it is popular and will make decent coin because it appeals to a wide audience but I can almost bet this will be a half ass attempt and they will spend only 100M on this movie with some crap director and rush it to theatres hoping to make some money.

I want Marvel/Disney to do this because they are better and will give it the best treatment. Imagine Pixar doing F4 movie!!!!!

Fox will piss all the fans again.

Fox should not attempt adaptations of comic book and graphic novels.

  24. Three out of four suggestions for the villan are German actors. Funny, but odd. Germany, the Country of the Oktoberfest, the Autobahn and John’s most favorit movie villans…

    What would Sigmund Freud say?

  25. To support my above point here is what variety said

“Though Marvel Entertainment owns and finances properties like “Iron Man”, “Hulk”, “Captain America” and “Thor,” Fox controls “Fantastic Four” in perpetuity—as long as it continues making the films. Fox has the same arrangement on Marvel Comics properties “X-Men,” “Daredevil,” and “Silver Surfer” –which, despite an appearance in the “Fantastic Four” sequel, is still a Fox priority for a solo film.

There we go. Fox is doing this just to hold onto the rights.

    1. I disagree Don,

They’re doing it to make money. That’s the end of the discussion. If they didn’t think making another FF film would make them money, they wouldn’t do. Period.

Studios let properties go all the time. FF is a profitable name. They made two shit movies and still made money. No way they’re letting FF go

      1. John, I think you’re wrong (or maybe naive) about studios not holding onto rights simply because they make money. There’s plenty of movies NOT being made because a studio buys the rights then throws the script into the “never to be made” bin.

Having said that, I do agree with you that THIS instance could be about Fox wanting to realize they have a winner on their hands, if only they can get the right combination of director and actors, cuz if they made a nice chunck on the crap they put out before, imagine if they actually had TALENTED people for another shot!

      2. Name ANY other reason studios make films. At the root of it.. its all about money.

You would be naive to think otherwise.

After the fan reaction of the last film, it would make sense that they would approach another with a degree of caution.

That they would reboot is the wisest choice considering there is little chance the fans would give it another generous chance with the current cast.

      3. Klendathu

Wait, where you implying that that 1994 movie was made to keep the Fantastic Four rights with Constantin Film?

        Oh I see.

Well even so, they did it for money. Perhaps not in the short run, but they where surely thinkng about the money, which is WHY they where so cheap and made the movie with a 2 million dollar budget. And it worked. A decade later they made 2 movies and they both got over 100 million dollars

I think Rise of the Silver Surfer made 150

      4. Hey LordThyBob,

No… that’s not what they did. What they did was make an ass load of money. Which is exactly why they’re making another one and want to keep the rights. It’s ALL about money. Make no mistake about it

      5. I guess that reasoning didnt work.

Lets put it this way, if they REALLY didnt do it for money, and did it for something else (And dont tel me “Keeping the rights” doesnt count as money because it fucking does) why did they make it so shitty and with such 2nd grade effort? The movie took a month to film

      6. @Godfather

There’s plenty of movies NOT being made because a studio buys the rights then throws the script into the “never to be made” bin.

You are correct when you say that, but you left something very important out. While studios do that, (with the exception of scripts they themselves commision) they ALSO after a period of time, let those rights lapse. The writer(s) and/or the producers of that project can then take those scripts to other studios if they choose to do so.

      7. James

I was indeed implying that they made the 1994 flick soley to keep the rights. And hey, it’s true!

BUT, I can dig your reasoning, they made the cheap movie to keep the rights in order to make one later (albeit over a decade later)that WOULD make money…

Doesn’t change the fact that they wasted 2 million on a movie that was guaranteed NOT to make money.

  26. As much as you hated the first two films I am surprised you spend time talking about F4.

I myself don’t like the movies now that I think of it but I really love F4.

My problem is that fox is actually doing this reboot just so that they could hold on to the rights longer. They don’t want this to go to disney/marvel.

You see it is a pride thing. If it makes a lot of money and gets great reviews with Disney/Marvel at the helm they will look bad and Murdoch will fire the clowns at fox who couldn’t do a good job on F4.

So basically I expect fox to rush this movie into production and fuck this up all over again. It will be sad if a reboot of a franchise ends up sucking donkey balls. This will totally kill F4.

Please god please I hope fox smartens up and surprises us all.

    1. If Fox wanted to keep the rights they didn’t need to do a restart/reboot. They could make a direct sequel. That sequel could stink just as the previous films, and they wouldn’t have a big name “guest character” to hype the film this time around. They chose to start over.

As for rushing the film into production-? That doesn’t mean the film itself will be bad. The last two films were not rushed. Look how medicore they were.

  27. I was semi agreeing with most’ve them, again, don’t really see Ralph as Mr.Fantastic but no doubt he’d pull it off. Then Chris Pine as JS. That flat out HAS to happen.

  28. Doctor Doom
    – not familiar enough with the character nor 3 out of 4 of the actors to comment

    Sue Storm
    – Yvonne Strahovski: YES!!! Brilliant! Not even sure she’s “perfect” for the role, but I’d love to see her do it anyway. And your comparison of her to Jennifer Garner was ironic because I had also thought that a blond version of Garner could work in the role.
    – Scarlett Johansson: Maybe
    – Kristen Bell: Maybe

    Mister Fantastic
    – Ralph Fiennes: Not sure.
    – George Clooney: Fitting, but you’re right; maybe a tiny bit too old.
    – Zachary Quinto: I don’t think so.

    The Thing
    – Michael Clarke Duncan: Yes! Again, brilliant.
    – Adam Baldwin: In performance, maybe. In physique, not sure.
    – Vin Diesel: Please, no.

    Human Torch
    – Chris Pines: Not bad. That could work.
    – Ryan Reynolds: Yes. But, he runs the risk of playing every comic book character. Maybe they should make an Eddie Murphy-style superhero spoof movie in which Ryan Reynolds really does play every superhero character. Okay, maybe not.
    – Joseph Gordon-Levitt: I don’t know. If I still get to see (500) Days of Summer maybe that will help make up my mind.

    1. (_|_) :O :O :O

      HAHAHA!… Just kidding CW.

Ya. John’s made some interesting picks, and I think I can agree with Fiennes, Duncan, and Pine. Duncan should be an EASY choice for Thing, but maybe have someone smaller (or CGI Duncan) as a chubbier, shorter self when he’s just Grimm. I’d rather see Farhan Tahir (http://www.imdb.com/media/rm1290114816/tt0371746) in the role of Doom. I think he just looks more sinister.

As for Sue, we know you have a think for Bell, but come on man! Really? She’s so damn tiny! Highly doubt she’d pass for a super hero. I say if she can act, Gina Carano (women’s MMA fighter) would be a better choice. More believable as someone that has balls (well, hopefully not, but you know what I mean) to play a super hero.

I know that similar looks play into some of your choices, but I think that the comic books that have had stronger box offices, have had stronger casts, and that should be the primary focus this time around.

      1. I dig Gina Carano too, Godfather. She has done a few bits in low budget DTV films and videogames. Not so sure about Fantastic Four, though. But, given her loss in her previous fight and her oddball drama that followed it, it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if she starts to mold herself as the next Cynthia Rothrock, so to speak.

  29. Ralph “the other Liam Neeson” Fiennes would be PERFECT to use in a reboot of Fantastic Four. But I kinda see him more as Doctor Doom than Reed Richards.

Christopher Waltz would also be fine as Doom.

I’m not sure who Yvonne Strahovski is…but damn…look at her…

I definitely see Pine as Torch.

I don’t see Clarke Duncan as thing. You know, maybe it’s because we’ve seen him play Kingpin before. idk.

Oh, yeah, that’s who Ralf Moeller is! I thought I recognized him from somewhere! Gladiator rules!

  30. All awesome choices. I didn’t even think of Yvonne Strahovski at first but she’d be a perfect choice and wouldn’t have the creepy blonde dye job.

Also, if they get Adam Baldwin as well, those two could rehearse between shooting scenes for “Chuck”.
