The Treehouse Gang moves Forward

Role Models’ writer Timothy Dowling has put together a spec script that has the net a buzz with a Goonies sequel, but this won’t be that movie. The script titled Treehouse Gang has similarities to what could be a sequel to the 80s classic already has a director attached and is moving forward.

Kent Alterman has signed on to direct a movie called Treehouse Gang, based on a spec script by Timothy Dowling (Role Models). The story revolves around six friends in their late-twenties who get together for “a treasure hunt that echoes the hunts of their youth, in the process exploring longtime friendships and grudges”.

With Hollywood taking spec scripts for original movies and writing them into existing franchises to build brand recognition I would not be surprised if they had rebranded this and cast the Goonies in a massive reuinion flick. Dirty Dancing Havana Nights could have just been Havana Nights but it made for better publicity to advertise it as a Dirty Dancing movie.

The comparisons to Goonies is obvious and it likely would fit, but the Goonies didn’t have “grudges” or issues to work out, and adding that would change the feel of a Goonies movie.

I think I would prefer a good reunion movie AND a totally seperate Goonies sequel. This doesn’t have to be made into the Goonies 2.

  1. I agree, this does not need to be a Goonies 2. However, after watching Role Models the other day, I am eager to see what comes of this movie. I like the plot, I just hope it does not go the way of Without a Paddle. Make it more like Stand By Me with older people. A lot of character development while maintaining a solid focus on the adventure at hand.

    1. god i hated role models…paul rudd i think his name is is just awesome actor and so is the stiffler but the kids in the movie made me hate this movie…and wtf LARpling!!! no fucking way dude!

but goonies 2 is the future IMO

    2. I disagree, the kids were pretty amusing. LARPing cracks me up and I thought it was great setting for some great humor. It’s not like they made it up, people really do that. The McLovin dude fit his part like a charm. The black kid was pretty awesome as well, though it is always a system shock seeing/hearing somebody that young spit out some of the dialog he had. I agree with you though, Paul Rudd and “Stiffler” are awesome.
