Marvel Heroes In 1602?

1602.jpgThere have always been a lot of “what if” type comic one shots. You know what I’m talking about. Isolated issues of a particular comic character where is just imagines what it would be like if the situation was different. Not meant to be a part of canon or continuity. Just a simple fun one shot story. Like what if it was the Waynes (Batman’s parents) who found Kal-El (Superman) as a child when he was sent to earth and was raised by them sort of stories.

Well how about if the whole Marvel superhero universe took place in the year 1602? Recently, Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier said he’s love to see a “World War Hulk” movie (how frigging sweet would that be?) or perhaps a movie on the 1602 story.

Leterrier doesn’t seem to be the only one who thinks this would be a good idea. President of production over at Marvel, Kevin Feige says it could actually happen at some point. The good folks over at MTV give us this:

“Something like ‘1602’ I think would be really cool to do at sometime down the line. I love it. It is spectacular,” he said. “But the key to it, the fun of it, is that you need to know those characters very well. You need to know each and every one of those characters and who their present day reincarnations are in order to enjoy and understand and appreciate how Neil was able to reinvent them and do that period spin on them for ‘1602.’ If you don’t know them yet and if they haven’t had their own stories yet, I don’t think it would be as much fun.

I completely see what he’s saying… but I don’t think it would ever happen unless it’s in an animated movie or something like that. Like he said, you’d have to first REALLY establish all the characters involved in the other movies first, make sure you have a significant audience for those movies, and THEN you could consider doing something like 1602. I just don’t think the time table is on their side. And frankly, I don’t think I’d be interested in seeing something like 1602 anyway. Now a World War Hulk movie on the other hand…

Well I do like Punisher from the 80s (the comic one). especially “Punisher War Journal”, Jim Lee as the artist I recall (he is still a newcomer back then). His drawing of Punisher is badass! Yet still retain the realistic situation of real world, also he’s drawn some nifty weaponry in that.
The old movie itself is still relatively enjoyable, although because it’s from 80s, a cheesy one indeed.Still I rated it highly than the last one (2004?)
I do also enjoyed most of the movie from Marvel so far, emphasis on “most”.

  2. Marvel 1602 is one of my favorite comics of all time.

    but a movie? hmmm.

maybe a live action mini-series or an animated feature.

if it was animated, why not get the comics artist on board, and a bunch of guys talented enough to copy his style. that would be nice.

  3. This sounds interesting. I actually haven’t hated anything that Marvel has done except the Punisher from the 1980’s(?). That was just terrible. I actually didn’t hate films like Spider-Man 3 or the Fantastic Four films. This could be cool

  4. 1602 had a good story, although the ending was pretty dumb. I wouldn’t object to seeing it in movie form, but like you said John, I think it’s more suited to be an animated feature than a big crowd-pleaser for theater-goers.

  7. well I don’t see how there could be a Hulk in 1602 cuz none of that nuke gamma shit would’ve been invented/discovered yet so that’s out. But I think with some of the other guys would be cool. Guys that weren’t created in a lab but just naturally came about that way.
