Speed Racer Set To Close Tribeca

Speedracer1It appears Speed Racer has been given the honor of closing the Tribeca Film Festival this year. We get wind of this honor thanks to the professionals at Variety:

Maven writing-directing powerhouse the Wachowski brothers bring “Speed Racer” to close this year’s Tribeca Film Fest on May 3. As previously announced, fest will open April 23 with “Baby Mama.”

Family friendly live-actioner stars Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci, Susan Sarandon, Matthew Fox, and John Goodman. Wachowski signature visual effects track Speed’s (Hirsch) quest for justice as he discovers races are fixed by ruthless moguls and bands with his nemesis, Racer X (Fox) to win the treacherous race that took his brother’s life. “The Tribeca Film Festival is a defining event in New York’s entertainment culture, so it is an honor to have ‘Speed Racer’ chosen as the festival’s closing night screening,” said producer Joel Silver, who previously teamed with the Wachowski brothers on “The Matrix” trilogy.

I do not have my hopes set to high for Speed Racer. I was not a fan of the still images and the trailer was unable to inspire me. My instincts could certainly be wrong on this one; the fact that they have selected this film as a closer at Tribeca certainly causes me to pause. I assume you would want to end a fest with a film of quality, and if this reasoning be true – perhaps the film is better than I expect.

For those of you unable to attend Tribeca, May 9th will be upon us soon enough.

  1. As always, the Wachowski Brothers are aiming for something unique, pushing the boundaries of the cinematic experience.

I don’t understand certain people’s obsession with things being “dark” and “gritty”. You can make a film as grubby looking as you want (it’s not hard), but that still won’t make it a good film.

Instead, a good film needs a solid script (the Wachowskis are incredibly adept and experienced scribes), a unique slant (that’s apparent from the trailers), and needs to be treated with a genuine love and affection for the material and the characters (which the Wachowskis obviously have).

I have a feeling this film could end up being one of the biggest hits of the Summer.

  2. @HisDivineShadow

Hahahaha. Good one. I grew up in a reality that Pacino and Deniro were two of the most badass gangsters in the business. Hell yea I’m in heat. lmao. Just playin.

  3. @ Michael_C
    lmao! well.
not all cartoons…..the ones that are arent the comical homo saturday morning carebear types…
but if its a story like speedracer and can be made and taken seriously in the big screen then yes (something they didnt do) alls you need is to change it and make it more SERIOUS!!! THEY DIDNT DO THAT!! they have the yelow buildings and the cat in the house look to it!!!
but they COULD HAVE- they didnt but hell yeah it can be done especially to a racing movie. speedracer could have been such a badass movie….

  4. Joel Silver sounds like he’s so out
of touch he dosnt even know he’s out of touch.
He’s sitting (big ass btw) on a blockbuster and he dosnt get it?
    How typical.

To all those (except Silver) that don’t get Speed Racer I say Cool Beans. This film is going to explode and be HUGE.

Bjon86 you sound like your in HEAT for Pacino and Deniro…..

  5. @ Michael_C

dude they made a dragon ball movie that was animated and it sucked- now theyre making real life movie (might suck too but im pulling for its root) my point is this: you can make ANY cartoon into a good real life movie if you do it right
i keep telling eveeryone that if this movie had no pink buildings and reall race tracks and less lame characters (i counted like 13 characters in the trailer that i felt like punching..) it would be perfect.
if only they would have made it more serious and mean looking it would actually haver a chance against ironman
this movie looks good but it could have been SOOOOOOOOO much better

and as to why it got to the big screen- because of all the movies made from animated shows or comic books that turned out to make lots of money
so what they SHOULD have done is make this movie and aim it towards the people who used to watch it when they were little: todays 30 year olds. instead theyr aiming it at todays 8 year olds who barely know who speedracer is and enjoy spongebob 10 times more

  6. Hey doug and John. I am trying to go to nowlive chat board but i am unable to connect. There seems to be something wrong. Any idea what is causing the trouble??

  7. Yea that 4th trailer rules. And, yeah, Righteous Kill just looks cool just for the simple fact that they seem to have gone far out of their way to put Pacino and Deniro in every scene together, but I heard that the script and the movie are complete garbage, but do I care? Hell no. Al Pacino and Robert Deniro on screen together in the same frame over and over and over throughout an entire film. Uuuuuuuuhhh…..I’m there.

  8. Checked out the 4th Trailer, and while I don’t know if it changes my opinion, it is certainly flashy. Lots of lights and pretty things. It looks more like it will do good, but still not my bag.

“Righteous Kill” caught my eye more, but I don’t understand “Sympathy for the Devil” being played in its background.

  9. DOUG you GOTTA check out trailer #4 on apple.com/trailers. That shit is actually kinda hot. After watching all the other trailers after the trailer #1, I changed my mind about that movie. It looks like a good time. And Emile Hirsch is already the shit anyway, so that’s a plus. Just check that 4th trailer out. It’s hot.

  10. I will never understand the allure of “Speed Racer.” The film itself, as Doug pointed out, may be more than some of us gave it credit for, but I just don’t see how it can go to the big screen. There are plenty of animated tales that I love, but understand that they are destined to remain animated for their poor translation to live-action. Does “Speed Racer” really need to be live-action?

Just a side question, but is there any reason why good animated (not CG) flicks don’t run anymore other than television? I would pay for a good showing of HellBoy on the big screen rather than a late night Adult Swim showing on my notebook.
