The King Of Kong: A Fistful Of Quarters Documentary

King-Kong-Fistful-QuartersMan, I’ve been hearing just RAVE reviews of this little documentary called “The King of Kong: A Fistful Of Quarters“. I’ve got to admit that I first heard about it some time ago, but I thought it sounded just ridiculous and never bothered to go out of my way to see it. The idea is a simple one: Two men are vying for the title of greatest Donkey Kong player in the world. Sounds sorta dumb. But wait a second… people who have seen it just love this thing.

As a matter of fact, it got a great response at Sundance… got itself a distributor… and now is getting huge attention in both the online community and the traditional media. Damn… I had a chance to see this thing at Comic Con but turned it down… I’m starting to regret that decision.

Have any of you guys seen The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters” yet? If so, is it as good as everyone is saying it is? Is it over hyped? Is it amazing? What are your thoughts?

Just for fun… here is the trailer:

  1. I have seen this film and it is absolutely amazing. in fact it is on my top ten of the year. billy mitchell is one of the greatest screen villains you will ever see..just a total fucking asshole. he is fantastic…..and he is one hundred percent real.

at one point i thought perhaps this was a joke ….like a blair witch thing because it is just to awesome to be true but it is all real.

Just a great great film and I highly recommend you all go and see it if you get a chance before we get some dramatized version which I am sure must be in the works…..I will be surprised if a studio is not planning on making a film out of this…you couldn’t write a better story. A true underdog tale….

    fantastic.

  2. as a competitive gamer myself (ranked in the top 300 on Pac-Man Championship Edtion), I cannot wait to see this. High Score nuts come from all over. My friends wife bested the DR Mario world record without even realizing it (records need to be video taped in order to count) so there is a game out there for everyone.

And unlike sports, its just you and the machine.

I hope it opens in Madison, WI (great indie scene here, and LOTS OF GAMERS), but I’d travel to Minneapolis or Chicago.

  3. I had the same thought when I first heard about this but the trailer is a lot of fun and if the movie is even just a little funny, it’ll be worth watching. A Kong game-off? Hysterical.
