Nic Cage’s “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” Moving Forward

It’s been a long time since i wrote anything about the upcoming Nicolas Cage movie “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice“. I think the last time I wrote anything about it was back in 2007 when the project was first announced. Some of us thought it might have gone dark… most of us kinda wish it had. But new news is surfacing about the film and it appears the cast for the movie is all sorted about now.

The good folks over at MovieWeb give us this:

Toby Kebbell has boarded the cast of Disney’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, signing on to portray Drake Stone, a celebrity illusionist who joins forces with Alfred Molina’s evil sorcerer, Horvath, to gain ultimate powers, according to Variety. The Jerry Bruckheimer production is based on the popular “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” segment in Disney’s animated classic
Fantasia. The story revolves around a college student who is recruited to work reluctantly for a sorcerer and given a crash course in magic to help him battle dark forces in Manhattan. Nicolas Cage, Jay Baruchel and Teresa Palmer star in the film, directed by Jon Turteltaub.

The movie is already underway in New york and has a summer 2010 release schedule.

I have two minds on this. First off is the feeling this is just a disaster waiting to happen on biblical proportions. The potential cheese factor is enormous. Why does Nic Cage seem to be attached to all of these?

HOWEVER… I’ve got to admit that the premise also holds a lot of potential to be bloody cool if it’s executed right. Personally I’m going to withhold all judgment until I see some clips or trailers to get a feel for the film and the direction it’s going. It might be interesting.

What about you? Interested in this or do you want to erase it from you mind as fast as possible?

  1. By “based on” it sounds like they just mean “has the same name as”. Which in a way offends me. Like when “The Dark is Rising” was turned into “The Seeker.”

  2. “based on the popular “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” segment in Disney’s animated classic
Fantasia.” ≠ “The story revolves around a college student who is recruited to work reluctantly for a sorcerer and given a crash course in magic to help him battle dark forces in Manhattan.”

  3. the first thing this reminded me of was how they adopted pirates of the carribean and turned it into a trilogy. so basically disney is just going back to their gold mine of stuff and making it live action. we’ll see… i’m not interested at this point though.

  4. i wish we could go back to the days that nic cage actually had decent movies like: raising arizona, the rock, face/off, and others. Now it just seems that everything hes in is nothing, but garbage even thought “knowing” would be his “comeback”, but that was almost as worse as the others, i am willing to give this film a chance its just hard to get excited about anything he is in anymore.

  5. There is a pic floating around the web with Cage is costume and it’s pretty amusing. In context of the film it may not seem so out of place, but for now, it got a few giggles from me.
