Cloverfield 2 Writer

Cloverfield was a pretty good movie that doesn’t stand up well to multiple viewings (and with a 70% drop from week #1 to week #2, most people didn’t bother seeing it a second time). The film was a creative idea that capitalized on the novelty of the premise (the whole movie shot from the perspective of a handycam, following a bunch of friends in a quest to save the lead character’s love interest in the midst of a monster attack on New York City).

I liked the film, but have absolutely no desire to see a sequel (but who am I kidding, if it’s sci-fi I’ll be there opening day almost no matter what it is). The novelty is now gone. It’s been done. But when a movie makes almost $100 million dollars and it only cost about $50 million to make and market, you know they’ll make another one (wouldn’t you?).

Anyway, its been confirmed that Drew Goddard will be back to write the second film. “Who is Drew Goddard?” you might ask? Well, he wrote Cloverfield. “But I thought JJ Abrams wrote Cloverfield?” you may ask. Nope. “So JJ Abrams directed Cloverfield?” Nope. Matt Reeves did. It’s still amazing how many people assume Abrams wrote or directed this thing. He didn’t.

Anyway… your thoughts? Are you pumped for a sequel? Even if you did or didn’t like the original, does a Cloverfield 2 excite you?

  1. I had to watch the movie a second time to understand the exploding part. When they walk in that area where people are being treated, you notice that there’s a guy with a gaping hole in his stomach and someone says “That was a bite”. I guess the bite does something to make your guts explode. Gross. I’d love to see a sequel, but I want it from the government’s perspective. I want to see the aftermath. Not another run-around with a camera. It wouldn’t seem believable a second time.

  2. WHATEVER!!!
I just saw the novie and was kinda like… WTF???? I liked it tho… but it didnt really have anything original… I mean, monster attacking and destroying New York; DONE! footage from a camcorder; DONE! I really liked the subway scene, when the “spider” things attacked them, but didnt understand what happened to the girl that was bitten, DID SHE EXPLODE???
I’d like a sequel that explains all these things, and that shows different poits of views, but no more shaky camera!!!

  3. I like the idea of a mockumentary. Like Spinal Tap, only about the monster, lol! No, really, but I like the CNN idea — they could splice together bits of news stuff and people’s vid cams, all “telling the story” in a non-linear fashion and answering questions in a revealing way…but without being super-sledgehammery. That was one thing I loved about Cloverfield (and one of the Lost influences –YES I know JJ Abrams didn’t write it, but Drew did, and he’s a big Lost person, so to speak, and works a lot with Abrams — and to say a producer does not influence a film in any way artistically is a little harsh, BTW)…that is to say, the way the film reveals things on a need to know, casual basis. If you’re someone who needs to have things spelled out in a super-expositional manner, I’m thinkin’ Drew Goddard and other dogma style filmmakers are probably not the ones to look to…

  4. i personally thought cloverdick was great…although ive heard rumblins that the sequel may be the same attack from a different camcorder… that doesnt sound like a great idea, especially showing the same attack again. just hope they dont screw it up

  5. I’m up for a sequel that is a “real” movie done from the military/government perspective. Same story, different angle. I enjoyed Cloverfield, but got no closure. They need to do another one to at least explain what the hell is going on.

  6. HELL YEAH I WANT ANOTHER ONE. BUT THE SEQUEL SHOULD BE SHOT LIKE A MOVIE IS SHOT NORMALLY, NOT WITH A SHAKY CAM. MORE BACKGROUND INFO ON THE MONSTER WOULD BE NICE TOO. IT WOULD BE NICE TO SEE WHERE THIS THING CAME FROM, OR IF IT WAS UNDER THE OCEAN FROM THE GET GO.

  7. I like the idea of a sequel, because there are many open questions in the first movie. As for new concept: They could show the events from a different perspective (e.g. CNN like news show).

  8. Ummm A lot of people know JJ didn’t write or direct the flick and still liked it. Not to mention if people think that he did write/direct it then they’re morons because it does not say that ANYWHERE.

Abrams produced the movie, that is all. Many other big names have done the same thing by putting: “From Aclaimed director blahblahblah”

In NO way is JJ alone in this- For example, Quentin Tarentino is guilty of this- In the trailer for Hero (You know the one with Jet Li that was made in CHINA) said at the beginning “Presented by Quentin Tarintino”

WTF? He had no involvement in the making of the film at all- just his name attached. This happens ALL the time in Hollywood John, I don’t know why you’re getting all fussy about it with Cloverfield.

  9. Darren, I love it! I had a good time at Cloverfield and will be happy to see a sequel.

Of course John couldn’t let a mention of Cloverfield go by without his weird “I liked it but I really kind of hate it too” declarations. And John it’s not about loving a film and not liking your criticism of a films flaws, it’s about your bizarre record with this film beginning weeks before it’s release when you essentially declared it unworthy of buzz or anticipation.

  10. Okay! Glad you asked! Here goes.
You better sit down for this!

    ****

The Cloverfield monster gobbles up unsuspecting lunch as the human veal records her demise on her cellphone camera. As she dies, the monster chews the wrong way, the hand -with the cellphone still in it- gets severed and lodges in front of one of the teeth, kind of like that celery string that gets in between your gums.

The cellphone (or camcorder) records video as the beast lumbers about, tearing up shit. Gobbles up some more folks, gobble gobble. Yum Yum. The cellphone (or camcorder) then slowly rides down on the beast’s drool. Later on, this video is found…and compiled with other video devices taken from the creature’s droppings, not unlike of getting the phone of of the dino crap in Jurassic Park 3….

  11. Abso-freaking-lutely. I, too, saw Cloverfield twice John, and enjoyed it every bit as much if not moreso (seeing as how I knew to take a dramamine the second time!). Different strokes for different folks, I suppose.

  12. They should shoot the sequel the same way they shot “Children of Men.” It should have plenty of long uncut action scenes. This gives the same feeling that the handycam gives you without all the shaky bullshit.

Otherwise, they better make sure whoever owns the camera in the sequel also owns a steady cam.

  13. Hey ya all US friends,

Today was the press junket interview with Matt Reeves in Paris (Cloverfield is released this Wednesday), and I had to interview the director. As the alst question, I asked him: “As for the sequel, what can we expect? Another secret footages from another monster in another city, Paris maybe?”

He answered: “Paris would be pretty cool, but I think a Tokyo thing could be awesome too. But at this stage, we’re looking for something (a concept?) that can be as fresh/as surprising as the first movie.

Those are not the exact words (i can’t remember all of it) but well… I let u know when the video is online (on Commeaucinema.com).
