Justice League Casts Superman, Flash, Green Lantern and Talia

According to our friends over at Firstshowing, some early confirmations have arrived concerning the casting of the new Justice League movie. They are:

Adam Brody (In the Land of Women, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, The O.C.) is The Flash / Wally West.

Common (Smokin’ Aces, American Gangster, Wanted) is Green Lantern / John Stewart.

Scott Porter (Music & Lyrics, Speed Racer, TV’s Friday Night Lights) is Superman / Clark Kent.

Teresa Palmer (The Grudge 2, December Boys) is Talia Al Ghul, the daughter of Ra’s Al Ghul.

More announcements should be coming in the next few days.

As big of a Sci-Fi/fantasy geek that I am… I can only really muster one word for my feelings about this upcoming Justice League movie… and that word is DOOMED. This casting does nothing by increase my fear and dread for the hopelessly mishandled property. I’ll be there opening night regardless… and I’ll hope the high heaven that it kicks ass… but I’m telling you right now it won’t. Damn I hope I’m wrong.

  1. This sucks. The recasting of Batman and Superman sucks. Throwing away the Batman Begins and Superman Returns continuities sucks. The use of Talia as villain sucks (it would only make sense if the Batman Begins continuity is kept). John Stewart as GL sucks, Common as John Stewart sucks (they would benefit a lot from using a Hal Jordan in The New Frontier concept). Adam Brody as Flash sucks. However, after the success of The Dark Knight, and the Avengers movie publicity, I bet they’ll reconsider these poor choices.

  2. They need to do the one thing everyone is looking for and make the guy from Smallville the new superman. for god sake he has earned it enough by playing clark kent anyways. I think he would make the best hands down.

  3. this will suck.. i like common but not in this…this will be garbage. I am tired of rappers in roles, and I am a young black male saying this. Just leave Hal jordan in it. also, the other casting seems horrific..does anyone remeber how bad batman forever and steel was?

  4. There is SOME hope. Hollywood Reporter is saying that there isn’t a shooting script ready. Also that although they have found actors, their options are about to expire.

Then again, WB might see what a turd this is turning into and find any excuse to shit-can it ASAP. So…this thing very well might collapse before February after all…

  5. Um…3 guys playing Batman in four movies wasn’t good to begin with, even since after the fourth movie ruined the franchise they had to really reboot everything for Batman Begins, which worked for the better. Christan Bale kicks ass, and if it wasn’t for Christopher Reeves and Brandon Routh, who knows where the Superman franchise will be (pretty much nowhere).

Anyways, I guess we can forget that Superman Returns existed (I know some people will be happy about that; I won’t), since JLA will be out before any possibility for a sequel with Bryan Singer.

  6. Oh no! someone else is playing Superman! and now he has all these new, super powered friends like Wonder Woman and Green Lantern! And Batman is tagging along! Played by someone other than Christian Bale! I can’t realize they are characters that are bigger than their actors! Even though Batman was played by 3 different guys out of 4 movies! My brain is gonna explode! This is totally quantum physics!

  7. This sucks. I think the ‘Justice League’ movie will suck for a number of reasons. Here are a few:

    – Throwing away the film continuities of both Batman and Superman franchises
    – Recasting characters with new actors for films that were released either within the last year
    – Recasting characters with new actors for films that are currently in production
    – Recasting characters with new actors for films that are coming out next year

    …and I have a few questions:
    – Why are they recasting the role of Superman?
    – Umm…why are they recasting Batman?
    – I read somewhere that Michael Gough might play Alfred the Butler. Isn’t Michael Cain ‘the new’ Alfred?
    – Why is the Happy Feed dude directing this?
    – Wasn’t there supposed to be a Wonder Woman movie?

    So. Confusing.

  8. to everyone that is saying the film will suck, can you at least give reasons for why you think this? So YOU wouldn’t have put these guys in the movie? So what? Don’t go to see it. You’re pissed off with whatever direction they appear to be going with on this one? well guess what…the people making this film don’t give a shit because they are not aiming it at you. This is going to be a kids film, period. When you start taking off your “every super hero film must be gritty and realsitc” glasses, you might have a new appreciation for the film.

Stop bitching as it might not be that bad!

  9. This is not a nice cast.

For it to succeed, the producers must cast Christian Bale as Batman and Brandon Routh as Superman.

This casting will work since they’re both young and in the peak of their careers.

Please also get Jessica Biel as Wonder Woman.

Both Bale and Routh will give the JLA film the credibility that it needs.

  10. OK, we’ll just have to agree to disagree for the time being, John. I guess we just see things differently.

By the way, I see you have a Transformers DVD commentarie but is not available yet? I’d love to hear it.

  11. Well here you go, doing it again John. Why is the movie doomed?

“I’ll be there opening night regardless… and I’ll hope the high heaven that it kicks ass… but I’m telling you right now it won’t. Damn I hope I’m wrong.”

WHY won’t it? Can I borrow your time traveling machine? It won’t kick ass because you don’t like the cast? LOL, don’t be ridiculous…

  12. well…..i got no faith in this….stewert is a cool gl….good to see another black superhero on the screen…..but this is gonna suck……bad cast…..shouldve been in 3d……WB is makin movies for the WB audience……garbage…..oh well darknight should be good

  13. GODDAMNCOCKSHITTINGFUCKINGFAGGOTBASTARDASSHELLWHORINGPISSEDOFFBITCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That’s it. I am showing support for The Dark Knight only and converting to Marvel. Even Ang Lee’s Hulk is better (I’m saying that because I know there are some people who hated that movie)!

You know what, I guess nobody learned shit after Superman IV (strike 1) and Batman & Robin (strike 2). Looks like its strike 3 for DC movies. I’m sorry, but building up to a Batman/Superman film should be the main focus. Even a FUCKIN’ video game movie has better luck than this mess.

Wow, haven’t felt this pissed off since before I saw the X3 trailer. For the record, my anger on JLA is different from X3. I thought X3 was going to suck before the trailer, but at least the MAIN CHARACTERS (like Wolverine, Prof. X, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Magneto, etc.) had the same damn cast. There is no logic of finding a new Batman and Superman after YEARS of finding the right choices for their respective films. Hell, get Tim Burton (with all due respect) to do Superman! I can take that.

I face the chance of eating my words, and if they prove me wrong, more power to them. Still, I really don’t see a positive result.

  14. I just feel bad for Adam Brody…I stopped hoping this flick would be worth watching long ago. Maybe in a few years no one will remember that Brody did this movie.

Someone please surprise me and make a good movie. Pardon me if I don’t even consider holding my breath, though.

  15. Brody is actually, in my opinion, a pretty good choice for a young Wally West barely taking over the Flash mantle.
The rest, however, are stupid as shit. That girl as Talia?! She doesn’t even look the part! I’ll at least give them that Common’s got the JLU’s John Stewart look down but his acting? Well, I’m not one to judge, but rapper-turned-actors rarely work out well.

  16. Okay, so call it a Teen Titans movie if it makes you feel better, or maybe Justice League: Year One (which is what Batman Begins basically was). I’m not going to argue that the WB isn’t run by morons… because I’m pretty sure it is, but I do think this doom and gloom is all a bit premature.

No one seems to be acknowledging that Adam Brody as an Impulse/Flash character is a pretty great idea. I haven’t seen any of the others in anything, so I can’t speak to their acting ability, but the actress they have playing Wonder Woman does kind of look like Wonder Girl. I would have preferred to have the Hal Jordan Green Lantern, but John Stewart isn’t bad.

On the plus side, the early reports that Superman and Wonder Woman and the rest would not be the focus of the story seem to be proving untrue (which I think was a pretty major complaint from many).

Also, DC’s characters seem to suffer from the fact that they’re all super powerful and not really very interesting (I may get blasted for this, but I’ve always preferred the more human and flawed characters of Marvel). Making them younger adds the element of inexperience to the writing and I think it will make for a more compelling story. Not to mention to added potential for sequels.

All in all, I just think it’s a little early to write this off. And if you just adjust your thinking, the young actors both make sense and, I think, even sound pretty good.

  17. Sorry to interrupt. Allow me to introduce myself.
My name is Yeeles J Nerrad, the twisted twin of the intern’l friend sometimes known as The Seeler, who most of you may know as “Darren J Seeley”…

Mr. Seeley had come down with an odd, but very contagious flu bug which seems to have taken him over since first reading this post about the Superfriends (JLA) film. He’s been hurling chunks of green stuff, and now has an icepack on his forehead.

I don’t know exactly how he got it, because he could NOT have gotten it by reading Mr. Campea’s post. After all, as we all know, most rap/hip-hop performers are terrific thespians, the idea of the daughter of Ras Al Ghul in the film is brilliant because now it ties into Batman Begins (and I’m happy they are recasting Batman! Christian Bale was so overrated! Hopefully they will cast Bruce Thomas, because he *was* the best Batman **ever**, but I’ll accept it if they get Justin Timberlake, that would be awesome! After all, Common will need a seasoned “actor” to have lines with) and the re-casting of Superman is the greatest thing- “Superman Returns” was so awful, it makes perfect sense the WB would go for a retcon/redo/reboot/reshoot whatever the hell they call it. No go and Routh? Routh is just a no go and a no show.

Adam Brody? That’s the only real downer. I mean, this clown was horrid on the Gilmore Girls, and that piece of trash called ‘Thank You For Smoking’- which also features that future Two Face dude.
That’s alright though. One rotten green apple in the bunch of reds might not be so bad. He will have to be carried, but he’ll look great alongside that great actor Common.

I know my dopplanger is a big Mad Max/Road Warrior/Mad Max Thunderdome fan, and that he’s much rather George Miller return to Mad Max. Maybe WB should have approached Roland Emmerich, but Miller…the Babe films and Happy Feet…he’s the perfect choice for this, because, let’s be honest here. Comic books are for children. Joel Schumacher a few years ago was on the right path. It’s time to get some of the saccharin magic back.

In any case, as much as I’d love to update the int’l friends on the status of Mr. Seeler, I have to go now, because I myself need some asprin, and perhaps even a valium….

  18. This is absurd. The WB has their heads so far up their collective asses that they can’t even see daylight anymore…

“Common” will be the GL John Stewart? (Which I think is a mistake in both the GL selection AND the casting.) But yet, all of the things we have heard from WB about a solo GL films say that it involves HAL JORDAN as their GL! How is that going to work?

“Oh hey, it the JLA, and Green Lantern is a black architect who becomes a space cop who was selected to protect this area of the Universe because of his unique ability to be ‘fearless’.” >>> FAST FORWARD A YEAR OR TWO TO THE GL SOLO FILM >>> “Oh hey, its the GL movie and Green Lantern is a white test pilot who becomes a space cop who was selected to protect this area of the Universe unique ability to be ‘fearless’… um, uh… ALSO?”

I know people individually are not stupid. If you know a little about DC Comics than the use of one or BOTH of these characters shouldn’t be a problem. However, most people are not comic book readers and DO NOT follow the who saga of all of the heroes. So if you introduce what will seem like the SAME character to the general public, all it will do is possibly confuse the issue and alienate some audience members. (Unless they somehow explain it in one of the films.)

Just imagine if they released ‘The Hobbit’ right in the middle of the 3 LOTR films, with a whole different cast and a slightly different plotline. That would suck. And I guarantee that some people would be confused and others annoyed and yet others indifferent. Yet, I don’t think ANYONE would actually like the idea.

Someone at WB should go intern for Marvel Films. They seem to be doing things right. NOT every Marvel film is a “win”, but at least it seems they understand the rules of the game. The WB isn’t even sure what sport they’re playing. (And that’s sad, because, no slam on Marvel, but in general I am a FAAAAR bigger fan of the DC heroes. Marvel is just doing it better right now.)

PS – Henrik! You are NOT(???) a fan of the current Batman film? AH! For shame! (LOL) IMHO its one of the top 3 super hero films made to date!

  19. ya know its funny i think these are probably the best casting decisions that jla is going to have……………………and that makes me feel really empty inside! suddenly im feeeling that batman and robin isint going to be the worst thing the batman franchise has spewed out from its shitty insides. ladies and gentlemen i believe we have a new contender!

  20. I’m interested in seeing this.

Is the Justice Leage, how bad could it be? But I’m not a fan of the current Superman or Batman movies, so maybe that’s why I’m not throwing a fit over this.

  21. This is a nightmare. They should make it “Justice League Musical” and put in a few dance numbers to top it off.

I have zero interest in this movie, and I LOVE comic book movies…

  22. Oh gawd, Talia’s in this?

I have to hand it to the powers that be at WB (i’m turning into Roadblock from G.I.Joe here), they can’t stop their actual Batman series from being great right now but they’re doing a splendid job of screwing up everything around it.

This is all about selling toys isn’t it (which i will admit, they will succeed in)?
