Forrest Gump 2

Forrest-Gump-2I enjoyed Forrest Gump. I thought it was a pretty endearing film with many upsides… but as a whole I thought it was over praised. It winning the Oscar in 1995 over The Shawshank Redemption to me still stands and the single greatest blunder in Oscar history… but I digress.

Believe it or not, it seems that Paramount is looking at putting a Forrest Gump 2 project into motion. Our friends over at CinemaBlend give us this:

An absolutely reliable, unfortunately anonymous source, contacted me tonight with the latest scoop on Forrest’s impending return. It seems that old 2001 Eric Roth screenplay is being dragged out of development hell for another look by Gump producers Steve Tisch and Wendy Finerman. Remember that the first Forrest Gump movie was based on a novel by Winston Groom. Roth’s sequel script was based on Groom’s followup novel, “Gump & Co”. “Gump & Co” takes place several years after “Forrest Gump” and finds Forrest’s shrimping business failed and Jenny dead, leaving Forrest a single unemployed father.

I have my doubts about this… but let’s say for arguments sake that this is 100% true, and that the studio is indeed thinking about doing Forrest Gump 2. Personally, I think this would be a HORRIBLE idea. Let’s face it… as cute and endearing as the first film was… having Tom Hanks (if they even get Tom Hanks back for it) doing the old schtick of the slow guy “I’m forrest… forrest gump”, I think would be tired even before the opening credits finished.

As much as I liked the first Forrest Gump… Forrest Gump 2 is a horrible idea… and not even one that I think the studios would make much money on… which in the end is what I think will put the breaks on this project… if it’s even true in the first place. Your thoughts?

  1. When do you think that forrest gump 2 will come out in theaters? From what i have heard that it will be another good tom hanks movie but dont know if it will top the charts like forrest gump did in 1995 but as all of us know the sequels are normally awesome. Im a forrest gump fan as anyone would imagine. Just let all of us fans know when forrest gump 2 comes out

  2. forrest gump is an awesome movie first of all, and real people would understand it, but the idea of a second movie is bad though, this movie is a classic and i’m sure the studio is gonna wreck it!

  3. No-one can understand why I hate forest pump so much… but it is almost unwatchable.. shawshank on the other hand is certainly one the best films ever made.

  4. I dunno, if book 2 (which I have not read) is funnier & has more back flashes on world history like MOTHERNATURE mentioned above, I think it could be good. For me, those were the funniest bits in the first film. Sure we might be sick of the “Hi I’m forest, …forest gump” touchy feely cliches but those would only take up a small percentage of screen time if used. If they do go ahead & make it, good luck to ’em.

  5. This is an awful idea, they will be making a huge mistake if they make this movie.

The original is a full story with a begin’ middle and end, imo there is no reason to extend its life.

  6. NO NO NO!!! It was fine when they were building sequels to crap like big mommas house and meet the parents but you CANNOT and i mean CANNOT make a sequel to a fully rounded academy award winning movie like FOREST FUCKING GUMP!!! God damn this world gets shitty-er and shitty-er everyday, waht the fuck, there are plenty of other ideas for movies to think of, if they cant think of any then contact me cuz i know some good ones that havent been done yet! Fuck…you know and Forrest Gump is my all time favorite movie, like… what a bunch of losers at paramount. I cant even say anymore i’m so super pissed off right now!!!

  7. ides of march is right…

he was promised “net” points from the box office but the studio believe it or not claim that forrest gumo never actually made a profit on the net and they have the books to prove it..heavily cooked books.

it was situations like these that lead actors etc etc demanding a percentage of the gross as opposed to the net…getting money from the gorss meansyou receive money from the total gross regardless of whther or not it is a hit…thats is when you are t om cruise giant star…some have a clause that they will get a cut of the gross when it reaches certain points of success…say someone might have a deal that at 50 million BO they start to receive 5% of the gross form that point on……

net points are the nasty ones.

they are what people refer to as monkey points as you would have to be a monkey to accept them. Pretty much anyone who has been told they will get “net” points wind up receiving nothing. even on mammoth hits like gump….you see studios will put losses from their bombs up against the monies from their hits….so you could be offered net points ona huge giant film like gump but once the studio have finished with the books it appears that the film never actually made any real money….when obviously gump made money but the studios are crafty.

this is an incredibly short version of what it all means but I read abook about art buchwald when he took on paramount over coming to america and it covers alot of this kind of thing…..

the gunpo situation was similar….he assumed he was about to get a nice pay day after it became a global blockbuster but was told sharply that it had not made any net so therfore he didn’t get anything…ugly business …ugly business….

  8. I enjoyed the second book. It has more crazy moments of Forrest getting mixed up in world events, eg, he gets shot into space with an orangutan and crash lands in papua new guinea where he lives for a year or two with his monkey and some natives.

But the theme is good, his son turns out to be a genius as foreshadowed at the end of the first part. So it’s Forrest struggling with his son being smarter than him. Kind of like I am Sam.

  9. There was rumor that the author of the book, Winston Groom, did not recieve any money from the success of the film; therefore, when it came time to write the sequel Winston Groom was not very enthusiastic about writing a sequel. Can’t really blame the guy. The majority of reviews of the 2nd book are pretty negative. Yeah, I don’t see this movie seeing the light.

  10. when has something being a horrible idea stopped hollywood when they think they can make a buck….

if a studio smells a dollar they would make any old shit and they have done in the past….

even if they don’t get hanks i wouldn’t out it past them to recast it…why not…..

    i see it now…

    Sean William Scott is
    Forrest Gump in

    Forrest Gump 2: Forrest Gumper

Co-Starring Justin Timberlake as Lt Dan

Having said that …. i know we disagree about the singers acting thing but has anyone seen timberlake in alpha dog?? i agree he was pretty bad in that edison thing but he is actually not bad in alpha dog – seriously. I would go as far as to say he was great… he is a supporting player and he does a good job in it…

anyway – here is a studio meeting about this film

“forrest gump made 400 million. so if we can get half the people come back we will make 200 million. hanks is too expensive and zemeckis said he would only do it if we did it like polar express what do we do? call ratner, william scott and timberlake. we got a sequel to make!!!”

  11. I loved Forrest Gump. It was a cute little movie. And no, the message is not about stumbling into success..it a story about a not-so-brilliant man who everyone picked on, everyone put down, who wasnt looking for success, never cared about sucess, and lived a better life than any of the assholes that picked on him. Someone said just said that it was all visual effects and crappy storytelling. That is just bull shit.

  12. i can see people liking pulp fiction…do i think its better not really …i mean both where good stories but i personally like the happier story better…..that year was obne of the best years for oscars…but to say forest gump didnt deserve it lol wtf ….get real

  13. If they did this movie a couple years after, sure why not, but unfortunately it’s been spoofed to death and it would come off as a spoof of itself….if that made sense.

    No Forrest Gump 2

    Nord

  14. @ Kurt

Pulp Fiction is better than Forrest Gump, but it is no where near as good as Shawshank, but thats my opinion….back on topic, making a Forrest Gump 2 is hands down the dumpiest thing ive ever hear, the first one was a good movie and it ended well, leave it alone, shit…..hell bring on BHC4, both would be a waste of f**kin time but i would rather she axel than forrest in another movie….

  15. I think the original Forrest Gump did a fair bit of brain damage. What was the message of that movie again? Stumble into success. The American Dream?

The movie was technically brilliant, but utter pap in terms of storytelling…may as well have been directed by hack-meister Ron Howard.

As much as I love the Shawshank Redemption (another overpraised movie, even if it is a damn good one)…The winner of the 1994/1995 Oscar for best film should have hands down gone to Pulp Fiction.

    Who’s with me?

    Bueller? Bueller?
