Luca Guadagnino Addresses Amazon MGM Studios Dropping Artificial

Filmmaker Luca Guadagnino recently addressed the news that Amazon MGM Studios opted to drop his upcoming film Artificial. The project, a biopic centered on OpenAI founder Sam Altman, has faced a high-profile exit from the studio, but the director suggests he is not entirely surprised by the development.

During an appearance on the Italian program Otto e Mezzo, Guadagnino was asked about the situation surrounding the film. He noted that he could not provide extensive details due to the ongoing nature of the situation, but he characterized the decision as a reflection of standard industrial policies. To provide context, he compared the move to the 2003 cancellation of the mini-series The Reagans by CBS, which eventually found a home on Showtime.

Reflections on AI and Society

Beyond the business side of the production, Guadagnino shared his perspective on the broader implications of artificial intelligence. He expressed that his primary concern is not the technology itself, but rather how it is fundamentally altering society and human identity. He described his experience filming in San Francisco, noting the stark contrast between the city’s technological advancements and the social challenges present on its streets.

The film, which features a reported budget of $40 million, stars Andrew Garfield as Sam Altman and Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk. While Amazon MGM Studios has moved on from the project, reports indicate that other distributors, including MUBI, are currently circling the film to potentially pick it up.
