A popular Xbox video game is officially making the jump to the big screen. A live-action Sea of Thieves movie is currently in development, bringing the pirate-themed open-world experience to theaters.
The project will be produced by Destin Daniel Cretton through his production company, Hisako. Cretton is well-known for his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and for directing the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. While Cretton is attached as a producer, a director for the film has not yet been named.
Bringing the High Seas to Life
First released in 2018, Sea of Thieves was developed by Rare and published by Xbox Game Studios. The game allows players to explore a vast ocean, complete voyages, and hunt for treasure as pirates. Originally exclusive to PC and Xbox, the title expanded its reach to PlayStation 5 in 2024.
The adaptation is part of a broader push by Xbox to bring its gaming franchises to live-action formats. This trend follows the success of other recent game-to-film projects. With the gaming landscape increasingly influencing major studio slates, it is no surprise to see a title with such a dedicated player base get the feature film treatment.
Expanding the Xbox Cinematic Universe
The Sea of Thieves project joins a growing list of adaptations based on Xbox properties. Other titles currently in various stages of development include a sequel to A Minecraft Movie, a Netflix-produced Minecraft animated series, and projects based on the Gears of War and Wolfenstein franchises. As of now, there is no official release date window for the Sea of Thieves film.
