Madonna Explains Why Her Biopic Fell Apart at Universal

The Madonna biopic that fans have been waiting for faced significant hurdles before its eventual collapse. The music icon recently shared details regarding the studio disagreements that prevented the project from moving forward at Universal Pictures.

In a candid interview, the singer explained that she spent years developing the script and working on production logistics. The primary point of contention was the budget. Madonna noted that she required a substantial budget to properly capture her life story, which led to a falling out with the studio. She also addressed skepticism from executives regarding her commitment to filming in Serbia, a location she had identified as a more cost-effective production option.

Creative Challenges and the Shift to Netflix

Following the breakdown of the Universal deal, the project faced further complications. Madonna revealed that she could not easily reuse the script she had written for the studio without paying a significant fee to buy it back. While Netflix eventually expressed interest in developing the story as a series, the process of finding a suitable showrunner proved difficult and time-consuming.

The frustration of these stalled negotiations led the artist to pivot back to her music, where she reconnected with producer Stuart Price. Despite the setbacks, the project has not been entirely abandoned. By 2025, Madonna had partnered with director Shawn Levy to develop a limited bioseries for Netflix. Julia Garner, who was originally attached to star in the feature film version, has previously indicated that her involvement remains a work in progress.

It is rare to see such a transparent account of the development process for a high-profile project. These types of creative and financial impasses are common in Hollywood, but they rarely become public knowledge in such detail. For fans, this insight highlights the immense difficulty of translating a life as expansive as Madonna’s into a single film or series.
