Ninja Scroll Returns to Theaters in Stunning 4K Restoration

A Classic Returns to the Big Screen

Anime fans are getting the chance to experience one of the medium’s most influential action epics the way it was meant to be seen. The classic 1993 anime film Ninja Scroll is returning to theaters this fall for a special limited engagement, giving longtime fans and newcomers alike an opportunity to watch the legendary samurai adventure on the big screen once again.

According to a report from IGN, Iconic Events and AMC Theatres are partnering for the re-release, which will take place on October 4, 5, and 7 across North America. The theatrical event will showcase a newly restored version of the film created from its original 35mm negatives and presented in 4K. The restoration process repairs damage and performs color correction to create an archival-quality digital master of the film.

A Defining Moment in Anime History

Written and directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri and produced by Animate Film, the story follows wandering swordsman Kibagami Jubei. The mercenary warrior finds himself caught in a deadly conspiracy during feudal Japan, pitting him against the terrifying Eight Devils of Kimon, a group of supernatural ninja assassins plotting to seize control of the Tokugawa shogunate.

When it first arrived in 1993, the film made a huge impression with its kinetic action sequences, mature storytelling, and incredible animation. Alongside titles like Akira and Ghost in the Shell, the movie played a major role in introducing Western audiences to adult-oriented anime. The film was famously cited by Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski as one of the influences behind The Matrix. You can find more information on the film’s legacy at its IMDb page.

Why This Matters for Fans

For anime fans who grew up with this title, this theatrical return offers a rare opportunity to revisit one of the genre’s defining action classics. While there have been various attempts to continue the property over the years, including a 2003 television series and stalled development on a live-action adaptation, the original film remains the gold standard for the franchise. For viewers who have somehow missed it over the last three decades, this may be the perfect time to discover why the film continues to be held in such high regard.

Tickets for the theatrical re-release are expected to go on sale in the coming weeks.
