The upcoming film Artificial, which chronicles the dramatic 2023 firing and rehiring of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has hit a significant production hurdle. Amazon MGM Studios has officially decided to pass on distributing the project, leaving the film in search of a new studio home.
The decision to drop the project was reportedly made by Mike Hopkins, the head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios. While the studio did not provide a specific reason for the move, reports suggest that the final cut of the film featured a tone darker than initially anticipated. This shift in tone may have created friction given Amazon’s substantial $50 billion investment in OpenAI and the company’s ongoing partnership with the tech firm.
Finding a New Home for Artificial
Despite the setback, the production team is actively working to secure a new distributor. In a statement, Amazon expressed continued respect for director Luca Guadagnino and noted that they believe the film will be better served by a different studio. The studio emphasized that they hope to maintain their professional relationship with the filmmaker moving forward.
The film features a notable ensemble cast, with Andrew Garfield leading the project as Sam Altman. The cast also includes Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk, alongside Mark Rylance, Yura Borisov, Monica Barbaro, Billie Lourd, Jason Schwartzman, Cooper Koch, and Cooper Hoffman. The screenplay was written by Simon Rich.
Beyond the central narrative regarding OpenAI, the film reportedly examines the complex dynamics between industry leaders, including comparisons between Elon Musk and a dictator. The story is said to place a heavy focus on the role of OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever, portrayed by Yura Borisov. As the search for a new distributor continues, no official release date has been set for the project.
