1990 Captain America to be released on DVD as a director’s cut

…Just because two Cap’n America news stories are always better than one! Well, actually, this bit is more about the 1990 DTV cheesefest- but it is a bit of a surprise due to the upcoming DVD-BluRay release come May. Did someone say “director’s cut”?! I wish I was making this up, but I’m not.Moviehole gives us:

The film, at one stage supposed to be a big-budget flick for 21st Century Film Corporation but instead produced as a dreadfully low-budget mess when financers dropped out just before filming began, is returning to our shelves though, hitting Blu-ray – complete with an extra half-hour or so of footage!

Director Albert Pyun, who claims the studio took the film out of his hands and produced the car crash of a film we have now, tells io9 he’s restoring the film from his “own 35 mm CA work picture and temp mix” and his new 124 minute ‘director’s cut’ (as opposed to the 97-minute abomination) has “a few added scenes, and is more character-oriented and less ‘super hero action’”.

Yes, I can see that there could be a reason why some folks might shell out cash for this, and the hype round the new film would help sales on this (maybe). but this is Al Pyun we are talking about. I might be interested in a director’s cut of ‘Sword and The Sorcerer” (or it’s never made sequel) and I do have a soft spot for 1993’s ‘Nemesis’…but Pyun having a director cut of the 1990 Captain America film is interesting.
Not that the first seen film had much action scenes in it anyway, the best of them (to put it mildly) were big close ups with low lighting.
The film itself did have a nice revival on Hulu last year, so maybe there’s an audience. Will they allow themselves to get milked, that’s another story.

What do the int’l friends make of this?

  1. ‘Sword and The Sorcerer” is a classic dude! I wanted one of those triple blade swords when I was a young lad.

was Skull, the red demon looking dude in that one too?
    (same make-up!)

  2. This is one of my favorite films! I remember it starred Catcher in the Rye author JD Salinger’s son, and was absolutely horrible. But, lucky for me and my friends, it was SO awful, that it passes through terrible and comes full circle into cult classic comedy genius! It becomes Rocky Horror bad, and encourages MST3K style mockery in a room full of friends, and for that, I love it!
