Adam Berg to Direct Deadpool?

A Deadpool film is so up in the air with WB and others preoccupying Ryan Reynolds (an obvious fan favourite for the role) who is still currently attached to play the mouthy mercenary, and now Robert Rodriguez is not in consderation for directing.

But it seems they have someone new in mind. Adam Berg. Wait… who?

Latino Review says:

Who is he? Well he’s definitely not a big directing name, but he does have a couple of nice credits under his belt. Although the newcomer hasn’t directed a feature-length film, he’s directed a short called “Carousel” that won the Cannes Lions International Advertising Prize. Whether or not he ends up getting the job is entirely up to the folks putting this spinoff film together. At the moment actor Ryan Reynolds is still attached to star as the “merc with a mouth,” and that’s all they’ve told anyone so far.

Really? We are going to toss Rodriguez for some guy who has never directed a feature film in his career?

I understand that everyone needs their first, and its not always a death sentence, but they should really let this guy cut his teeth on something more than a short or a commercial.

Deadpool isn’t an A-List character, but he does have a following. The secret to selling this character is to correct the wrongs of Origins Wolverine (Wade vs Weapon XI) and sell this to the general action fan market and not the fanboys. Still, you need a capable director. This guy COULD be it, but we don’t know.

Check out Adam Berg’s Carousel, which won the Cannes Lions International Advertising Prize:

It is an impressive short and says so very much in its presentation without actually showing any movement.

I just get nervous for a film I anticipate so much being handed over to such an unknown variable. It could be brilliant. It could be worse than Origins:Wolverine

  1. I honestly believe giving this project to someone new is a good idea, I mean with the huge amount of comic book films out now, I think it would be nice to see a new face direct one. Also, from his short film we at least know the man has some talent so why not give him a shot?

  2. Everything surrounding this movie seems BAD. That is probably why Ryan Reynolds is slowly distancing himself from it.

Sucks because I would have loved to see it

    1. He isn’t distancing himself from it at all.

With this film not having an official green light and Reynolds being such a hot commodity right now it just isn’t a priority. Don’t confuse him staying employed with distancing.

Can’t sign on to a film that isn’t in production. They are still working the pre-production and Reynolds has said he has a passion for the character and looks forward to doing it.

The closest thing he has said that might be misconstrued as distancing is that he was looking at his next project and said it would be Deadpool or RIPD, but not both. RIPD is closer to being made than Deadpool.

  3. I’m sitting here….

    I’m speechless…..

    Okay. Now I’m back.

It’s too bad Rodriguez passed (or was passed over?); at the very least if it happened I was hoping that Fox would offer it to Nimrod Avatal (who helmed Predators) or perhaps Joe Carnahan (A Team, Smoking Aces…who was on a short list for Wolverine II)…I’d even accept ‘Shoot Em Up” w/D Michael Davis to be on a short list for the project. Or Wayne Kramer (Cooler, Running Scared) for that matter.

Yes, everyone has to start somewhere, I suppose.
But most of time, don’t such directors have a low budget first film unrelated to a big project?

Why do I get the felling that Deadpool is…going be dead for awhile?
