Weekend Boxoffice Report – July 16th-18th

This weekend at the boxoffice brought on one of the most anticipated films of the summer, and dominated the boxoffice.

Inception has been greeted with amazing reviews and its no suprirse that with that came a solid top spot opening.

Boxoffice Mojo has the estimates:

Inception – $60,400,000 – Opening
Despicable Me – $32,734,000 – 2wks
The Sorcerer’s Apprentice – $17,373,000 – Opening
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse – $13,500,000 – 3wks
Toy Story 3 – $11,742,000 – 5wks

What did surprise me is how big a gap there was from this and Sorcerer’s Apprentice! I quite expected this family film to give Inception a run for its money. The trailers looked solid and Cage looks like he is on. I still haven’t seen it, but that might have been part of the problem.

And with Despicable Me drawing on the same demographic that might go see Apprentice, it clearly didn’t help matters.

And the respectable Toy Story 3 picking up the scraps of the Top 5 pulling in just shy of Eclipse’s rapidly setting sun.

I wonder if there are any execs looking at the staying power of Eclipse and wondering if it was a bad idea to make the giant epilogue of a fourth novel into two films?

  1. It doesn’t matter that the fourth Twilight book is being split into two part (even though it is a bad idea). Eclipse is going to make $300 million and the next two parts will probably make more. What really concerned me was that Predators dropped 72% from last weekend. Ouch.

  2. I havent seen Sorcerer’s Apprentice yet but will very soon. I was planning on taking the entire family as well.

Really surprised at its numbers so far, thought they would be much better.
