Blind Speculation – Nestor Carbonell as Khan in Star Trek 2

While I am surprised that with Star Trek already being released on Blu and DVD, we are not already hearing news that Star Trek 2 is not already filming. A lot of that has to do with those in charge choosing to take his time with the inevitable sequel, which even Abrams admits he wont commit to directing until the script is finished.

Well before the first step is taken on the continuing journey of the Starship Enterprise, wild speculation has already said “they” are eyeing Nestor Carbonell for Khan Noonien Singh, the role made famous by Ricardo Montalban in Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan.

Coming Soon is starting this fire:

Nestor Carbonell, who plays Richard Alpert on the J.J. Abrams-executive produced ABC series “Lost.”

Now, before you go shouting Nestor is KHAAAN! There are way too many variables right now, including the fact that the Khan character may not even be in the sequel. We just know that if they started filming today, he would be their man.

Really? They know this for sure? There isn’t even a script, and this rumour seems to say that “they” have a favourite for the role that “they” should know is even in consideration. This is just blind “I think this person would be a great Khan” speculation.

I am of the camp that revisiting Khan would be a terrible mistake. They went to such great lengths to recreate Star Trek for a new generation without offending the remnant of fans still clinging on and building a whole new fanbase. That alone was a massive effort carefully scripted.

So why go back to repeat old stuff. Give us new stories. Leave Khan alone. Who knows if this Kirk and this timeline will ever have the two meet or never will the cryogenically frozen super soldier from the Eugenics war of Earth’s history ever be found and revived at all.

Nothing that happened in the original series has happened yet for these characters, and there is no reason for them to. Keep moving FORWARD without dwelling on the past. The slate is clean, so lets not soil it.

Speculating that Nestor would play a good Khan is fun to play around with, but I hope the character never comes to light again.

Move forward.

  1. Although I think Nestor would be able to pull it off, I agree that Khan should stay in the past.

No sense in bringing him out when they’ve turned the world upside down in the first movie. Let’s keep on a track far away from orginal Trek, JJ.

On the note of rehashing ‘villains’ in other flicks being succesful, sure, but can Hollywood do anything else these days than rehashing/remaking? Let’s stay orginal:-)

  2. I like the idea of old Spock deciding that Kirk’s showdown with Kahn is vital to his development and character. For him to be challenged, Spock would actually find and thaw Khan himself.

It would be doubly interesting in that it is when Spock originally died. Did Spock’s original death at the end of The Wrath of Khan also define Kirk? Would that mean that young Spock is destined to die?

If they went this route it would keep it fresh in my opinion. Always questioning if and how history will be different.

  3. I remember all this same stuff when The Dark Knight was announced, then when Heath Ledger was cast, yada, yada, yada. You all have NO IDEA what Abrams got up his sleeves — even if there’s a Khan, it’s not going to be the same story. And for those who complain about the fact that this is a new Enterprise and it should do new stuff… well, why aren’t you complaining that the same crew came together in the same ship, to “save earth” yet again? Maybe it’s just “fate.” Maybe it’s just playing to the audience. As long as it’s done well, who the frack cares? GET OVER IT.

  4. THERE IS NO NEED FOR KHAN.
    – leave him with the old series, aka,..the OLD time line. Wasn’t there a REASON for the “reboot” of Star wars,…errr I mean Star Trek???????
” hey we’re going to start fresh , re-envision the franchise with an alternate time line,…that being said, let’s re-hash the old stories……”

    – Hollywood is out of ideas,…Just friggin quit living vicariously thru Gen X’s childhood/ 80’s. seriously, do something new..Oh that’s right we’re talking about corporate Hollywood

    – this is starting to look more and more like the craptastic Star wars prequels.

” hey Speeder bikes were cool,..let EVERYONE have one,…Hey Everyone liked Bobba Fett, lets Ruin his character by putting HIM in the sequels as a KID!!!!…hey wasn’t that a cool scene when Vader cut off Luke’s hand,..let’s have that as a running theme,……Chewbacca was cool, right, well guess what ,..He’s in the movie too!!! AND he knows Yoda!,…isn’t this awesome, we’re going to take everything fans liked about the first series, and regurgitate them in this one, but this time we’ll make them crappier…but the effects will be AWESOME!!!!”

please don’t do a Khan story,..please…. . How about do a story relavent to the current time line??, like say,..I don’t know, something evolving the ongoing war with the Klingons??? nah,..Khan was awesome, so we should do that.

    – I quit.

  5. It’s nice speculation. But if this were so, why bother with the new timeline at all? There is also the plausible that some things will be altered and some things will not. Minor adjustments does not make for a feature film. That’s how I view the Khan angle.

There’s plenty of room for “untold” stories, and even the chance for new stories concerning the last two years of a five year mission.

  6. Star Trek 11 used time travel to wipe the slate clean and start all over again. While i liked Khan, using him just for the sake of the fans is wrong.

JJ Abrams should move forward, not backwards.

  7. I’ve never been a Trekkie, but I admit that the reboot of Star Trek was done quite well and could have potential to draw me in. But I think if they go into old material just to please the Trekkie’s then I would lose interest. I think it should move on with new material and new enemies. Rumors have been going about that Klingon’s would be the next villains and I think that would be a better approach to take in my opinion.

  8. No, please, do not re-do Kahn. For one, it will never always be better in my opinion, and many others. Two, it’s lazy–really, really lazy. I have no doubt the writers have thought of it, maybe even tossing it around still. But if they read these post, as they say they do, read between the cheers for a new Kahn.

  9. A good casting choice, but there are some issues.

1.) Khan was discovered cryogenically frozen by the Enterprise during TOS, so w/the movie reboot he’s probably still floating around out there as an ice cube. Mind you that could be quickly taken care of my showing another ship find him in the first few minutes. The point I’m making here is that the basis would have to be on TOS episode and not the second film.

2.) Why another Hispanic? Check out his name: Khan Noonien Singh. Also, he’s a Sikh. Yes, cultures are mixing more and more, but I would bet that more likely than not that Khan would look more like someone from the Indian subcontinent. Yes, Carbonell is on LOST, but so is Naveen Andrews. Let that sink in for a minute and think who would be more badass in the role.

IMHO it’s Naveen Andrews, hands down.

    Just my 2¢.

    1. 1) Khan says to Chekov in ‘Star Trek II Wrath Of Khan” that he remembers him. Chekov also knows of Khan. Yet the two never met in TOS. In fact, Chekov wasn’t even aboard the Enterprise yet. The new timeline now solves this error. Also the film reboot does not reboot the events seen in the Enterprise series. So I’m of the mind that “Space Seed” and “Wrath Of Khan” happened with some slight alterations.

Isn’t that also true of the rest of the original timeline, save for a missing planet? (Note: Vulcan *does* have to reappear at some point in order for the new time thread to be in effect) While it may be interesting to see those changes, they are minor at best.

We don’t really *need* a Khan story.

      2) An actor is an actor. They call it acting.

      1. Well, I don’t really agree with your opinion here (altough I respect it of course).

If a single man dies, the alterations to any timeline may be eventually enourmous, depending of his actions.
When and entire planet, with almost all his inhabitants, is blown to pieces, specially considering the planet is one of the four founders of the Federation (one of the two main federation worlds), the repercussions are at least overwhelming.

Of course, this is only a fictional story, and if the writers don’t want, it will not have any repercussion at all, but my guess is, the want it…

I for one would welcome Khan, but probably in a whole diferent story. I’d hate to see Genesis all over again. Probably something like Space Seed, but where Kirk and the rest are more determined (after all, they’ve been through a lot more that they had in the original timeline) to not getting beat.
Khan was marvelous on the movie, but was not so great in the series (altough not bad also). It would be good to have someone recreating this caracter as the powerfull villain he came to be on the movie. You know, something to make Nero look like a spoiled brat…

        Just an opinion though…

    1. Neither can I.

Even in Smokin’ Aces, he was never frightening. He’s better at playing the sly, suave villain, not the powerful and intimidating villain like Khan.

  10. What’s wrong with revisiting Khan? How is it any different than The Dark Knight revisiting The Joker? That turned out to be a huge success, all without offending fans of Nicholson’s Joker.

Personally, I would love to see Khan in the next film, and then from the third film on, take it in a different direction. I think that they will end up doing this, mainly because they’ll see how The Dark Knight was so successful in reimagining a classic villain.

BTW, Javier Bardem should be Khan.

    1. The whole point of the Star Trek reboot was that they proved that nothing is set in stone and the story is wide open from here… why revisit old stories then?

If this was a remake of Star Trek, then they could just churn through all the old stories, but its a clean slate reboot. Move forward, not back.

Just because some films can do the same characters in a reboot doesnt mean that all characters SHOULD be revisited in a reboot.

Khan was an isolated story, while Joker is an ongoing villain staple in Batman’s franchise.

      1. Good point.

But I do feel that most of the appeal of the first movie was being able to revisit the classic characters, while entertaining a new villain and plot.

Perhaps they could still include Khan, just with a different story? I mean, even with Nero changing things, he’s still alive in the Star Trek universe, flying around doing whatever he does; odds are good that Kirk and the crew would still run into him.

I just think that people would be less inclined to see the film if they introduce brand new characters and storylines that have no connection to the original Star Trek universe. And Khan is just too good of a character to pass up.

Although, like I said before, I’d be glad if they steered away from the original after that.

    2. Nothing is overtly wrong in bringing back Khan, anymore than Harry Mudd, which almost happened. Or if they brought back one of the Klingon generals. Heck, even I would love to see something that would blow your mind: The DS9 / TOS crossover with the Tribbles now changed…

But I’m more of the mind that there may be other adventures and stories. In fact, I’d either like to see the ramifications of the changed timeline (no Vulcan) and, let’s say the next film is a hit and they get a third film.

      *Perfect*

Because then the timeline could even correct itself… and we could still move on. The show only lasted three seasons. That’s three years out of a five year mission. We would either have a story regarding those missing years and/or an extended mission. before the events seen in the 1979 film.
