Star Trek gets a Sequel Greenlight

Star Trek is getting so much positive buzz lately that the powers that be are greenlighting a sequel before it even comes out.

Latino Review shares:

Story is still in the embryonic stage, but the trio are aiming to deliver their script to the Melrose studio by Christmas for what would likely be a summer 2011 release.

“There’s obviously a lot of hubris involved in signing on to write a sequel of a movie that hasn’t even come out yet,” said Lindelof, co-creator with Abrams of ABC’s “Lost” who produced the upcoming “Trek” but did not contribute to Orci and Kurtzman’s screenplay. “But we’re so excited about the first one that we wanted to proceed.”

As for potential storylines, Kurtzman stressed that the writing team will wait to take a cue from fan reaction about which direction to go.

This seems to be more the standard lately. Hollywood is willing to take the chance on a movie they already anticpate will rake in the coin instead of waiting til its over instead of getting around to it later when schedules work out causing a 4 year delay.

And I do like how they admit to be waiting for fan reaction. This is obviously the best way to handle the direction of the film but I hope they don’t let it railroad them. I imagine George Lucas quietly re-writing JarJar’s part in Attack of the Clones after the fan reaction.

But the slate will be clean, and they can do whatever they want with Trek now without having to resort to a team of consultants to make sure nothing conflicts. I hope that this movie lives up to its buzz, but I also wonder what they are going to call the sequel. Technically this is Star Trek 11, but its not. So will this be Star Trek 2.. again?

I say, BRING ON THE KLINGONS!!

  1. As for the title of the sequel, it is suggested that the story takes place in an altered timeline, thus loosely rebooting/restarting the franchise (aside from majority of TV’s Enterprise) and if it becomes a problem, bring in a Deus ex machina by the name of Q, and return things to (slightly) normal.

In any case Rodney, it would be “Trek 12” but it would most likely follow suit of the ST:TNG films with have no number but a subtitle (Star Trek: Generations, Star Trek: First Contact etc.)

    I say no to Klingons.
I say yes to a new threat.

  2. Negotiating contracts with the writers in advance because they might be getting them cheaper vs. after should the movie be a big hit? That might be a possible scenario since Paramount is notoriously cheap when it comes to it’s properties.

And where is the positive buzz coming from? From the studio? There haven’t been any screenings yet have there? Other than some scenes from the trailers and commercials has there been more material released for people to see?

  3. I like the fact that they are making a complete new story line for something that has a huge fan base, but already saying you can make a sequel to it without the fan base reaction? Now that is stupid!

something tells me that a good percentage of the fan base isn’t going to like this.

    1. Actually, it’s not stupid. It gets people talking about it, right? It may get people thinking – wow, thus must be a great movie coming up! And that will send them out to see it. Well played!
