Marvel Tells Us To Expect A Dr. Strange FIlm

Dr StrangeMarvel has shared some news regarding a Dr. Strange film. It appears that after the Avengers films are in the bag we can expect to see the good Dr. We get the following scoop from our friends at MTV:

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige Says ‘Dr. Strange’ Movie Likely Among Next Crop Of Films

The character Marvel editor Joe Quesada called “problematic,” and comic writers Neil Gaiman and Stan Lee called the one character they’d most like to see next in film, is very much at the top of the list for a post “Avengers” make-over, Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige told MTV News.

Dr. Strange is a super hero that I know next to nothing about, but would still be very interested in seeing a movie about him. The guy has an outlandish costume and appears to use dark magic as his super power. Anyone that can stand toe to toe with super heroes using occult magic – is a dude that I want to see in action.

Are any of you guys fans of Dr. Strange? If so, what would you like to see in his film?

I would like to see Tom Selleck get the role of Dr. Strange, I think that would be awesome.

  1. I staed my opinion in a review for the pineapple express soundtrack I did for Denver’s Westword. Would love to see the movie made though…

Various Artists, Pineapple Express Soundtrack, (Lakeshore). Marvel comics once had a title called “Doctor Strange” that was a terrible read but fun to look at under certain trippy circumstances. This collection is kind of the same thing. It’s no chart-worthy masterpiece, but fun tracks by Robert Palmer and Public Enemy are okay for recreational use. — Daviet

  2. I wonder if Gaiman is still connected to the script. A few months ago before he was booked for the next half century, there were those reports of Gaiman teaming up with Guellemo Del Toro.

Also, I strongly disagree with Rodney (or was he kidding?) – I can see Strange having something close to his classic ceremonial robes (including the Cloak Of Levitation) as seen above.
I did recall the time Marvel DID restart/re-invent Strange- and made him look like more of a costumed hero, and that was dreadful.

As for director (methinks Del Toro is, well, tied up for the next half century) I’d like to see a roll of the dice on any of the following four:
David Lynch (who would probably never take it); David Cronenberg (my personal choice), Wes Craven and …Mike Mendez (Gravedancers).

Who would make a good Strange? There’s a dozen and one actors who I can see in the part as far as who has the look down…Gerald Butler, Viggo Mortensen, Mark Ruffalo…I could go on and on so much so as to I can say whoever they get is fine with me. Just as long as Jessica Simspon isn’t Clea we should be good to go.

  3. I love Dr. Strange. Definitely one of my favorites. The one big problem is how they’re going to mix all these elements together. Iron Man & Hulk created a science-oriented universe, so magic will be a difficult subject to mix in. If Thor fares well, then we can say the Dr. is in. Another thing is that Dr. Strange is rich as well. Not as well-off as Stark, but still up there. I can’t wait. I knew they would make it. I don’t know who could play Strange well. David Blaine is a great look-a-like, but he has no talent. Hugh Laurie would be okay, but he’s got too much attention from House. I suck at casting calls. Oh well. Marvel’s 2-0 right now, so let’s hope for 3.

  4. Robert Forest,
Dormammu and Satanish use Dark Magic, not Doctor Strange who pulls most of his socrcery from The Vishanti. The Vishanti favor those in the light, not Dark. STRANGE DOES NOT USE DARK MAGIC. The Vishanti as whose names he always calls out. The Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth, Eye of Agamotto and Oshtur. They are protectors of Earth, not darkness.
I’m been a Dr. Strange fan since Strange Tales 169, so don’t BS ME!

  5. the only way that id digg this… would be IF

0NE- the main villain is dormammu and satanish is his secundary villain (not like a pet..like what tink was to nauda in hellboy 2)

TWO- if they give it a dark sort of look like the prestige. like a combo between a dark mysterious movie and an action comic book movie

THREE- rodney already pointed this out- but i wholeheartedly agree. change his clothes and give him a darker look

  6. @T-VO

Yes, He is the Sourcerer Supreme, but he sure as fuck ain’t using any light form of Magic. Maybe I was wrong in saying “Dark Magic”… but if it isn’t “Dark” what kind of magic is it? Cause He isn’t using pixie/fearie dust, my friend.

Oh, and I am a student of Strange myself, so don’t try to bullshit me here.

P.S. I still prefer Viggo for the role.

  7. I will never get tired of superhero movies. I collected comics from the age of 10-27 and read most every book I bought. Then adult life and parenthood caught up with me and I didn’t have the time for comics. I DID NOT GROW OUT OF THEM, because I don’t think you grow out of things you genuinely love. Thankfully, that point in my life was when comic book movies really took off and these two-hour, live-action representations of my favorite characters were easier to incorporate into my adult life. So bring on Dr. Strange (I even have a VHS copy of the television movie from the 70s). Bring on Spider-Man 4 & 5. Gimme Thor, Captain America, The Avengers, a Daredevil reboot… and keep ’em coming. I’ll buy tickets to them all.

  8. He does not use “Dark Magic” as Doug and other posters have posted. He’s the Sorcerer Supreme of our Unviverse and protects it from all supernatural threats. Any major storyline that affects the entire Marvel U, always has Dr. Strange involved somehow.
I would say he’s one of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel Universe.
Tom Fucking Selleck?? You have got to be kidding me.
    Kyle MacLachlan as Dr. Strange
Jet Li as his faithful man servant Wong, A bald Jet Li kicking ass? FTW!

  9. Hey Robert Forest,

Yeah that’s i’m trying to say as well, Superherodom is becoming lack luster and the only comic book movies of that i’m looking very forward to are Dragonball and Watchmen.

  10. @Kevin

You have a great point Kevin. But Dr. Strange isn’t really a Superhero. He is a Dark Magic user. A comic book PERSONA indeed. But I would never say Superhero in the same sentence as Dr. Strange… unless I was saying that Dr. Strange either fought or teamed up with one.

I agree with you 100% though that “Superhero Film Fatigue” could be setting in for the main stream very soon indeed! I never thought I would feel that way myself, but I have started to see it coming to my flesh. (which saddens me) Still, I am not sick of Comic/Graphic novel films. It’s the “Superherodom” that seems to be becoming lack luster for me. Movies like: A History of Violence, Sin City, V for Vendetta, Dick Tracy, 300, Road to Perdition, 30 Days of Night, the Crow, Constantine… these are all Comic book features that are great but have nothing to do with Superheros… for me, Dr. Stange would fit into this category.

  11. If you want a good primer on the Doctor, you should check out Marvel’s recent Dr. Strange animation. Apart from being a pretty good animation in terms of action, voice acting, and overall story, the animation covers the Doctor’s origin pretty well.

  12. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always LOVED superhero-esque films, but I imagine after the new crop of movies come out (Ironman, Batman?, Superman, Thor, The Avengers, Wolverine, Watchmen, Transformers, GI Joe, Terminator, The Spirit, The Green Hornet, Spider-Man, Punisher etc) don’t you think people may have superhero fatigue?

  13. I am very happy for a “pseudo Official” announcement of this being on the RADAR over at MARVEL studios. This movie will be great. He needs to fight the dark Forces of Lovecraftian Lore in the movie… there has to be Cthulian creatures that amass for the great Dr. to put the Kay-BOSH! on. While you may want Tom Selleck… I would have to deny you that if I had any say. Because Dr. Strange is far to interesting a character for him to ever pull off. My personal actor of choice to don the role would be:

    Mr. Viggo Mortensen

  14. I really expect them to Reboot Strange.

He wont be wearing that silly ass outfit, and doubtful he will be mature. They will rewrite him as a younger magically unaging thirty something man at oldest.

Otherwise this silly mess would have nothing to tell a story about.

  15. I’m a huge Dr. Strange fan, and I’m glad Marvel is finally taking the idea of making a movie about him seriously.

The best bet for a movie would probably be to follow the plot of the 2005 miniseries “Strange,” which was written by J. Michael Straczynski (creator of Babylon 5, among other things). It was basically a well-done update of Strange’s origin.

Also good was the miniseries “Doctor Strange: The Oath” which was written by Brian K. Vaughan (who is now one of the writers for Lost). If they made a sequel I would love to see them adapt this series. Not only was it fantastic, but it tied into Strange’s early life in a cool way and the events hit pretty close to home for the character.
