David Gordon Green Tapped To Direct Freaks of the Heartland

DavidgordongreenDavid Gordon Green will be journeying from Pineapple Express to an upcoming horror film called Freaks of the Heartland. We get the skinny from the butcher caves of Yahoo:

David Gordon Green, director of the recent pot comedy “Pineapple Express,” will take the helm of the horror thriller “Freaks of the Heartland,” a monster story based on the Dark Horse graphic novel.

Illustrated by Greg Ruth, Steve Niles’ six-part 2004 series about the horrible secret of a rural Middle American town involves Trevor Owen’s attempts to protect his “monster” of a 6-year-old younger brother and Gristlewood Valley’s other “freaks” from their parents’ worst instincts.

Small towns with peculiar secrets are great for horror films. They play upon the fear of being an outsider and the general “creepiness” most tiny rural towns posses. I once spent some time in a town with a population of about 20. In a land like that, booze and television becomes very important.

I consult the throngs of comic book readers on our site and beseech all of you for information regarding the graphic novel Freaks of the Heartland. What are your thoughts on the story, and how do you feel about Capt. Pineapple Express steering this ship?

  1. I thought “Pineapple Express” was insanely underrated; it was hilarious and smart, with a solid plot and a beautiful vision. I am very excited for this. (And Franco’s performance was astoundingly amazing)

  2. I’m leery of the choice of D.G. Green as the director. As the story is a great story scribed by the immortal Steve Niles, I would wish that they would have given the film to David Slade. He proved to be an Amazingly gifted Horror Story teller with another Steve Niles book to movie 30 Days of Night.

In all fairness I didn’t see Pineapple Express, so he may be a good Director… I haven’t seen anything that he has written/directed or worked on at all as a matter of fact after reviewing his IMDb page.

So, I shouldn’t be so quick to judge maybe… still, David Slade would be my preferred director for this project.
