MacGyver Movie In The Works?

RicharddeanIt looks like the legendary “on the fly” engineer MacGyver may be getting his own film. We get this surprising news from Gizmodo via slashfilm:

Today at Maker Faire 2008, MacGyver creator (and real life inspiration) Lee David Zlotoff announced he has a big budget MacGyver movie in the planning stages.

Zlotoff mentioned he somehow ended up with the movie rights years ago (extremely uncommon), giving him full control over the film. While few specifics were mentioned, and no formal announcement has been made, its extremely promising that the man with the power to make the film is getting the ball rolling.

If they have Richard Dean Anderson reprise his role as MacGyver, I will be interested in this project. I see no reason to hire someone else when the man still looks the same. I think he is an immortal, and for that reason alone – he deserves the gig.

I never got into the television program as a kid, but I know many people were fans of the show, and many MacGyver jokes continue to be thrown around to this day. In Half Baked there was even a gag about “MacGyver” bong smiths that could make a pipe out of the most obscure objects.

in this upcoming picture maybe MacGyver can get captured in Afghanistan by terrorists, and use his know-how to build a robot escape suit. That would make for an excellent film!

Would you guys welcome a MacGyver film, or has the opportunity passed?

  1. I really hope that someone to come along and to do an Macgyver film.
I’ve been a fan of Macgyver for some time. I am picking up the fist Macgyver film soon. Season 1. Love to see Richard Dean Anderson return to do this project

  2. This is my most favorate TV show back in grade 3 1987. There are no other shows like MacGyver, showing brilliant mind and a role model of good character. This is one of the most popular TV shows internationally that even its theme song is played by the bands in every public celebration. He lifted and represent Americans as cool but the most loving people on earth. If there will be a movie version, its’ story will go like he had raised a wonderful family with a beautiful daughter and he put up a good business like a good first class carwash or gas station. And his eldest son will be qouted as a Commercial Pilot or science teacher. His daugther had been kidnapped in India or Mexico on a school tour and transported to Europe to an international human smugler. Then FBI will work with MacGyver or ask help to save His daughter. They will travel at least 4 countries. I think this will look like adventurous story.

  3. can’t imagine anyone else than richard dean anderson to play macgyver. he still have the looks, just trim him up, give him a tan and he’s ready to go.
i they’re making this movie for the fans, there should be no other solution.

  4. MacGuyver, he is my idol in real life. A perfect role model in everyway and everyday as I was struggling growing up. I looked forward to every
episode then and now Iam ecstatic because finally “A MacGuyver movie” actually coming to the big screen. This is great news.

    1. If anyone besides R.D.A. plays MacGyver, or original actors for their tv characters (Pete Thornton being the obvious exception), then the movie will tank. No original actors and it will TANK bigtime!!

  5. My gosh this is liek a dream come true. MacGyver was the best show back in the day. Richard Dean Anderson is THE ONLY person for the role, if he doesn’t get it, the movie will tank. They should have him, Michael Des Barres (Murdoc- Mac’s enemy), Terri Hatcher as Penny Parker and even Cube Gooding Jr too if they had the right script for it. Everyone know that “Pete Thornton” aka Dana Eclar died in real life, which is sad. They could have “Nikki Carpenter” come back for this movie too and take over “Pete”‘s spot in the Phoenix Foundation. Its a lot to wish for but hey……who knows :)

  6. i’ve been waiting for the Mcgyver series to become a movie it will be a real hit. and i would say no other actor can play the role of McGyver but Richard dean Anderson alone co’z he is the perfect McGyver for Mcgyver..!!!

  7. I’ve been in love with Richard Dean Anderson since the first time I ever laid eyes on him, 23 years ago, so any movie he’s in I’ll love it, no matter what! He’s still got everything it takes to be MacGyver. I’m with you all the way, guys!!

  8. if ford and stalone can still do there action roles
why not richard dean anderson…the dude still pretty much looks the same xcept the weight he gain
through his past surgery, but pretty sure he’ll fix this problem like nothing, well this is RDA aka Macgyver we’re talking about, the dude thats knows how to solve everthing :D

  9. Big surprise for me and my wife! we both love MacGyver! I can’t wait to see the movie. this movie inspired me a lot, motivated me to help others using my skills in electronics, mechanics and IT. RDA, keep on being smart!

  10. (Type your comment here. Make sure you’ve read the commenting rules before doing so) Richard Dean Anderson was my role model when i was growing up.This man is the best ever and should be in the movie.

  11. Are you kidding?!?!?! Would I go see it??? YES!!! I love this man!
I def. think Richard Dean Anderson should star in this movie. It wouldn’t be the same without him.

  12. I can not believe what I am reading. I mean I have known about this for quite some time now but I am sooo stoked! I have got to be in the top five percent of biggest fans! I mean my room is covered in his works! I can not wait for this to come back because I have missed real television shows….there is not a lot on now a days that live up to this quality. To say in the least MacGyver was revolutionary for its time and has got to be the greatest show ever created. Richard Dean Anderson is a GOD! Bring on the flick!

  13. A new movie would be absoulutly awesome!!!! Just make sure that MacGyver isn’t like all corny and stuff and that this movie doesn’t destroy all the others like the new indiana jones one. Oh, and people are now into guys who are hard-to-get and hawt so don’t make him all mushy and falling for gurls every second. I think thats what used to make him so popular- on being cool, not a sleeper- arounder with different woman every show. This movie will work if you do it right. You can change his wardrobe, though.

  14. That scene is from Ironman movie 2008 –>

“in this upcoming picture maybe MacGyver can get captured in Afghanistan by terrorists, and use his know-how to build a robot escape suit. That would make for an excellent film!”

  15. You have got to be kidding me just today I was thinking about how MacGyver would translate into a cinematic adaptation. I was at my local video store looking at the different seasons of the show and thinking about. What a remake would look like who would they cast as MacGyver? I just hope that this film works as a continuation of the television series and RDA reprises the role.

  16. @ Jay E

The difference between Bionic Woman, it’s series, Knight Rider the movie, and upcoming series, is that they are all done by different people, and star different people.

This is the same guy who did the series, and it’s starring (hopefully) the same guy who played MacGyver. If someone didn’t like it, then they would know that it just didn’t live up to the reputation of the series. If someone else were to do it, then everyone would be like, “you should’ve had the original crew doing it.”

  17. LOLOLOLOLOL ….. OOOHHH Doug… only you would be so witty to say maybe he should build a giant robot escape suit… because it’s so fitting and soooo raw…. and … AWESOME!!! i own every episode on dvd and make apples from oranges and build random shit during macgyver parties that i don’t host. drink everytime he says “when i was young my grandfather used to……..”

  18. *waits for John to chime in about how the TV actor doesn’t have to play a character in the movie

I’m indifferent for now. I like MacGyver but after seeing the Knight Rider TV movie and all the TV show – movie remakes I don’t have my hopes too high.

  19. This is undoubtedly the best news ever. Well, close anyway. I just started watching Stargate SG-1 yesterday and while watching was wondering what RDA was up to these days… I think he should definitely come back as Macgyver!
