Spartacus Is Coming To TV

San RaimiThis isn’t really movie news, but movie man Sam Raimi is looking to bring us more sword and sandal action by way of an ongoing series dedicated to the legendary Spartacus. We get the following scoop thanks to our friends at the movieweb:

Starz is gearing up for some swords-and-sandals action for its next series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Starz has given the green light for its new series, Spartacus.

Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Joshua Donen will develop the series and serve as executive producer while Steven S. DeKnight has been come aboard as head writer and showrunner. The series will be based on the real-life adventures of the slave-turned-revolutionary who changed the face of the Roman Republic in 73 B.C. However, it won’t take a page from an existing film.

This series is going to be based on Spartacus, but will have nothing to do with the film of the same name.

This is a great score for the Stars channel and another chance for Raimi to get his hands into Sword and Sandal television. Xena and Hercules had him to thank, and now Spartacus joins the list.

This is a series that may bring me in front of the television on a weekly basis. I will hunt for this one when it comes out. I will watch this (watch this).

    very cool

  3. I just hope the series has a more serious tone, unlike Xena and Hercules (hope I didn’t piss off fans). If that’s the case, I would certainly watch it.

Not sure if everyone knows, but Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert has already exec produced a sword and sorcery series for TV… it premieres this Saturday…

The series is based on a fantasy series (The Sword of Truth) written by Terry Goodkind… so far, I think the trailers look pretty good…

  5. What Terry said.

But I also think there’s little to worry over- Herc and Xena had done their thing, why go for the same old song?

Note: Will the series be any better than the Spartacus miniseries from a few years back w/ Goran Vinjic?

  6. Dragonslayer says:

I’ll watch it as long as Sparty isn’t emo and bitchslaps someone

  7. Steven Carroll says:
