Fox Dishes About Future Comic Book Projects

Fox-Color-LogoIn a recent interview with Variety, Fox was pressed on their lackluster summer results, and asked what battle plans were being drawn for upcoming blockbuster seasons. From the Interview, Variety learned the following:

Though Fox has no plans for a major overhaul, the studio has scheduled a strategy meeting to assess the status of its superheroes, a group sorely missed this summer. On the agenda, Fox will mull the possibility of more X-Men spinoffs, including a young-X-Men project as well as Deadpool, based on a character played by Ryan Reynolds in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The studio is even considering reviving the Daredevil property.

So let me get this straight, Fox has a bad summer and decides to fix the problem with a box of broken hammers and rusty nails.

Does it seem strange to anyone else that the upcoming (and allegedly horrible) Wolverene film is being used as a vehicle to launch Deadpool? Remember when they tried to do that with Reynolds in Blade 3 – yep, thats all.

WB finally gets their heads out of their asses about the Justice League and now Fox is talking about a young X-Men project? This doesn’t sound good at all. When other people make mistakes, you are able to learn valuable lessons for free; only a fool do would do likewise and expect different results.

Regarding Daredevil – are they planning on reviving Daredevil with a sequel or a remake? Either would be a mistake at this point in the game, I would certainly wait a few more years before re launching the character. In time another shot at the character would suit me just fine.

I understand that Fox wants to get more of that sweet comic book movie coin, but if they start throwing out shit they are going to damn the genre and everyone will lose in the long run. They certainly plan to milk the franchises they have leased for all they are worth. I wonder how much longer they have the rights to use these characters. Maybe that has something to do with the seemingly rushed, piss poor decisions.

International friends, am I getting worked up for no good reason, or do you also see cause for concern?

I wish Fox gave the rights of their comicbook-movies back to Marvel. They could keep the distribution-rights but let Marvel have complete creative control. It worked for Paramount and Universal.

  2. HAZMAT_PWNS_ALL says:

ONE the wolverine trailer looks sick

TWO a deadpool spinoff is perfect hence in the wolverine movie they showed he had no mask and no cancer…so it would be great to have him do a couple of surgeries and then gets cancer and then he gets his own movie in which he starts the whole “dont ever touch anyones mask” thing

with the skinless face supported by see-through plastic like in the comics

i read the daredevil comics and he has a great deal of villains to work with…so i say they can make 2 more if they want..and daredevil is insanely awsome so im game for a sequel.

so to answer your question….yes. you are getting a bit worked up over something thta i consider to be the best news of the day.

    one mans trash indeed!

  4. Steven Carroll says:

Looking forward to these movies myself. The only reason Marvel won’t take them back at the moment is because they just can’t afford them with the slate of planned movies at this point. Hopefully they’ll make enough off these movies to be able to afford to absorb these properties back into the fold.

  5. Mattiac says:

I totally agree with you, Doug! I’m from Sweden so I’m one of your international friends. :)

  6. Klendathu says:

No no no! Let Marvel Handle Daredevil, PLEASE! He’s such a rich character, it’s not even funny.

  7. Mr. Chris says:

I’m really hoping they’ll at least start taking cues from “Iron Man” and “Incredible Hulk” on how to better handle their characters and stories. They don’t need to ruin everything through focus groups and change already-established franchises just to satisfy the movie-going public. They should at least stick to the comics and show us the better stories that most of us will never get around to reading.

  8. DON says:

Doug Blade movies were never done by fox. They were NEW LINE flicks.

The only comic book franchises fox owns are x-men, fantastic four, silver surfer, daredevil and deadpool.

  9. to don says:

    To Don,

They also own DRAGONBALL, DRAGONBALL Z, and DRAGONBALL GT, which they will begin to promote heavily starting with Max Payne.

Not only that, but they own COWBOY BEBOP and I heard they had some involvement in Gatchaman or was it Voltron? Not sure.

  10. I agree that these franchises aren’t ideal, but Fox is sort of between a rock and a hard place. With Marvel produceing their own movies and DC working exclusively with Warner Brothers, Fox doesn’t have many options except the two franchises they already called dibs on.

I agree that launching a spinoff is not a good sign, but it can be done right, Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk were basicly doing that with the Avengers weren’t they?

  11. dougnagy says:

    @ Don

I was trying to draw comparisons between; Ryan Reynolds in Blade 3 for the purpose of launching his hero team and his role as Deadpool in Wolverine. I apologize for any confusion

In both cases I think it’s inappropriate for the films to serve as launching pads. They are stand alone hero films – not a team of heroes in which you can have split off films.

  12. leeloo says:

    i want a new dd.
    /ben afleck.
    /jen garner.
    /mark steven johnson.

dd is perfect for dark gritty real hardcore crime drama.

  13. Audioout says:

    @Leeloo

I wonder if Ben Affleck can just direct it himself…hmm…

That was the problem with Daredevil. The director sucked. Daredevil is Fox’s best chance at a Dark Knight caliber film. Hopefully they realize quality will win the day.

  14. Well Doug, it’s time for me to throw my hat in the ring. Let’s look at what Fox DIDN’T say. They didn’t say “Let’s have Fantastic Four 3 w/Jessica Alba”. That’s okay. I think.

But what of “Magneto”? That’s NOT okay.

And you are spot on about spinoffs. If it makes the int’l friends feel better, let’s talk Daredevil. An alright film in theatrical (and, sorry fans) an alright director’s cut version. In any case, the franchise never recovered after the spinoff film named… Elektra, However, it’s also fair to say that a spinoff film of Elektra wasn’t planned until Fox witnessed the reaction to Jen Garner in the role. And then made a crapfest.

But I am going to side with you on something Doug. It does seem whenever Marvel has a film franchise of any kind (under other varied studios) and they want to set up a ‘spinoff character’, that character steals time away from the story, the main characters, or appears thrown in or underused. This is what happened on the second Fantastic Four movie. The Silver Surfer was the main drawing point. Impressive, interesting and hardly in the film. Galactus shows up. Storm cloud. Listening to the commentary a few months back, to understand why Tim Story & co. crapped the bed, my heart sank. Why was Galactus a storm cloud? Something to the excuse of: “ In the planned Silver Surfer spinoff, we wanted those filmmakers, whoever they wind up to be, to design Galactus their way”

    In relation:
    *Is it a shock some people were disappointed in Spider-Man 3- and guess what Marvel wants? A spinoff film around a character -Venom- who was hardly used to full satisfaction and was the biggest selling point in Spidey 3;

*Blade Trinity. Less Blade, more Nightstalkers. Bad choice.

*Aside from Deadpool, isn’t there hope for a Gambit takeoff too?

*Young X-Men. Might be fine if they are The New Mutants. But probably not.

    ***

As for greenlighting Daredevil. I’m all for it. But DD/Murdock will be recast since Affleck doesn’t want to be a party to it. Who knows if Jen’s game (probably not without the hubby) and I don’t really want a re-start…but it would be nice if Marvel got back the rights and continued from there. Owl, Mr. Fear, hell, even Wesley turning out to be like a Keyser Soze like character.
Loads of possibilites. Oh, also, instead of Elektra? Black Widow!

  15. bigsampson says:

deadpool is a awesome character same with sabertooth later on when he is a merc.

  16. Chris Rushworth says:

I’m ready for another daredevil film. Afterall its been like 5 yrs since the last. The same amount of time between Hulk and incredible hulk.

  17. Mozzerino says:

Concerning DAREDEVIL, I’m pretty sure they would have to recast Murdock if they plan on doing another one. Affleck has said in a lot of interviews that he has no desire to return to that franchise AT ALL.
Also Jennifer Garner as Elektra won’t happen again either. She apparently had a horrible time making ELEKTRA and hated the movie, but couldn’t get out of it because her contract demanded she’d do the spin-off when she signed on for DAREDEVIL.

  18. Penelope says:

Well I am an international friend so Hi from Greece! Well regardng MARVEL they should really run their own projects. Actually I think thats what they did with HULK 2.0 ( which was great compared to the first one but on its own not soooo good)

Now regarding Wolverine i think from what i saw in the trailer it wlll be great. Of course trailers are mainly misleading. But what I’m really expecting from the whole X-men origins series is the magneto one if they ever make it.

But people about Daredevil. If it goes to that i hopw they’ll make a remake and not a sequel cause frankly the first one sucked. And i really hope they dont put Ben Affleck in it cause hes a great writer and a decent director but not a good actor.

  19. Orren Jensen says:

I am alright with a Daredevil reboot. I like the original even with the flaws but it could use a little something. If that’s a reboot why not. I can see a teenage X-Mem team (The New Mutants, X-Factor, Generation X). That were they left the third movie, all the teens and a some key leaders. I am a little bite skeptical about a Deadpool movie. branching off like that seem like a disaster waiting to happen.

As for Fox they have the right idea. They are looking at other comic book movies and seeing how they are succeeding. I think in back of every exec head right now, when it comes to comic book movies, is The Dark Knight (DC) and Iron Man (Marvel). Top two comic movies of this pass year. So the next step is too emulate those films. How?

  20. Orren Jensen says:

… I think most people would agree with me that X-men, X2, X3 (only money wise) and Daredevil are the best Marvel comic based movies to come out of Fox. But if you look at the flip side of the coin, Fantastic Four, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and Elektra are the worst Marvel comic based movies to come out of Fox. I think Fox see this point and say to them selves we need to emulate are brother Marvel comic based movies, Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. A reboot helped the Hulk so why not make Daredevil better with a reboot. There are so many storylines with the X-men. After we get through these origin stories why don’t we venture into the other X-Men storyline like The New Mutants, X-Factor, Generation X and continue where we basically left off in the third film.

  21. Nixon says:

awwww This Article is Real !!!!

I agree!!!, either buy new license franchise or stick with same and continue no remake or reboot !!! It’s not worth it !

  22. HAZMAT_PWNS_ALL says:

    doug nagy

just cuz ray was in blade 3 dont mean jack

thunderbolt ross from hulk (2003) was played by the same guy in ghost rider (the old horse and hat ghost rider…curtis slay)

mistique from x-men was played by the same waitress from the punisher movie (the blonde chick that lived in the apartment that always dressed like a waitress)

and there are more of these but they just dont come to mind right now….

  23. Doug Nagy says:

I am not blaming Ryan Reynolds. He just happens to be a common thread.

  24. Jason Statham said he was keen to play Daredevil at Comic-Con. All Fox have done is seen how Dark Knight is doing, with its brooding vigilante vibe, and they want some of the same. Dark Knight even had a scene at the end where Batman uses sonar to ‘see’ in the same way Daredevil uses his natural sonar sense.

  25. Dragonslayer says:

    Fox sucks ass

  26. frankie says:

Deadpool would be a great comedy/anti-heroe movie for MARVEL not FOX unless they would give it the script to someone who loved comics and loved detail.
