DJ Caruso Wants In On Thor

Thor-420
Apparently Matthew Vaughn is no longer attached to Thor and Eagle Eye director DJ Caruso is trying to steal his seat. We get word of this news from Caruso himself thanks to the following interview with IESB:

IESB: Would you tackle a D.C. or Marvel property and if you would, and I mean traditional man-in-tights superhero movie and if you did which movie would you like to do?

DJ Caruso: You know…I would definitely tackle it and I sort of wrestled with it before and I was always a fan of Thor growing up as a kid. I know that they [Marvel] have a script, but there’s something, there’s a fear I have about Thor and depending on what Thor story you want to tell, whether you want to bring Thor into the modern world or if you want to go back to Asgard and get the history of what’s happening between him and his brother and dad. That’s one I’ve always been interested in and it also would be, it would be a monumental task so, I could definitely see myself getting myself into that.

IESB: Have there been any talks with Marvel?

DJ Caruso: I have had some talks with Marvel about it but I have not seen a screenplay. It could be something that I am interested in.

I think DJ speaks truth about the thunder god and I like the words that have come from his mouth. My only concern is that he hasn’t filmed an epic film to date and I would prefer to put the franchise in the hands of someone who has. DJ does has love for Thor, and a vision of what is right; maybe this makes right man for the job…. I am torn asunder with contemplation.

I say leave the decision up to Odin himself, consult the elders to read the runes; let his will be done.

  1. Darren:

I say it has to be epic.

In the best Marvel Thor stories, the canvas is always epic. You can still tell personal stories against an epic backdrop, and Marvel has nailed this with Thor (particularly Walt Simonson’s run). Melding that backdrop against the modern world in a film will be far trickier, but I sincerely believe that this is the ONLY way a Thor film works.

Thor is a god, and his character must be treated with the proper gravitas. In the latest issue of Secret Invasion from Marvel, when Thor shows up, his arrival is heralded by a massive bolt of lightning out of a clear blue sky. One of the heroes says, “It’s him.” EVERYONE knows who he means….cool moment, and just the kind of presence Thor must have in the movie.

  2. I like Thor in legend and Norse myth but I’m just not seeing a good movie coming out of this. I mean a dude with a cape and a winged hat? Come on! This could be really bad!

Anyone remember Yor? That movie about a Norse warrior that got planted into modern times? From the 1970’s? This could turn out to be the Yor of the 21st century. Terrible!

  3. oh Doug, in the Marvel Word the Asgardians consult the Norns (the 3 fates)not Runes. Its a newbie mistake, make sure it doesn;t happen again! I say thee nay, base villain! Make mine Thor! FTW!

    Couple of Q’s Doug:

    1. Who said “Thor” has to be epic?

    2. Why is this a concern even if it is? I mean, come on, Doug. Who did you want on this? Ridley Scott? “Last Samurai” Ed Zwick? (*Actually, if Ridley Scott returned to fantasy/sci-fi with Thor, that WOULD be a contract that would have be etched in stone, come to think of it)…We were down with Matt Vaughn, because us smart people caught last year’s hidden gem Stardust, but that still flopped.

    3. Where does this leave Y The Last Man? Does Y come first, next, or never?

  6. I’m a HUGE fan of the thunder god in all his incarnations whether in literature or comic, but this project scares the shit out of me. The potential of the directors and writers not taking the material serious enough is huge. Marvel may not have the desire to take this project in the epic direction that Thor deserves.

  7. Why do they have to do a movie about Thor in the Marvel universe?

Why don’t they just do a epic movie about the god of thunder from the original mythology? In Iceland all kids are required to read stories about the ancient gods, one of them is a book called Hávamál( which means Odins language) and other greats that have more than enough content for two or more epic movies.

Plus, Mel Gibson was there this summer and expressed interest in doing a viking movie. I say let him direct it and let’s get a brutal, Braveheart-like movie about vikins, the norse gods and the whole shebang. Forget Marvel.

  8. Love the massive image. Althought the Asgard direction should be the one, I suspect Marvel would bring Thor to the modern day if they want to introduce him to the Avengers later.
