With the buzz on the internet about the webisode “movie” that Joss Whedon is producing called Dr Horrible’s Sing Along Blog, as well as internet provided content being so predominate in Movie news lately is it any surprise that web released movies are growing in popularity?
My buddy Terry showed me this link, so I think you should check out this trailer for a very cool stylized pulp science fiction web movie, Iron Sky.
In 1945 the Nazis fled to the moon. In 2018 they are coming back.
IronSky’s official website describes this as:
Iron Sky will be the second film by the creators of Star Wreck, the most popular Internet feature film of all time. The script is written by award-winning science fiction writer Johanna Sinisalo. Iron Sky is currently in pre-production.
So aside from this looking cravingly cool, do you think there is a market for independantly created films self distributed on a website?
If you saw something like this and were as impressed as I clearly am, would you be inspired to track down the DVD for purchase?
I know I would.

These are the same guys that did the Finnish Star Trek movie a few years ago.
And this is not a web film in the sense that it will be episodic but rather a feature film distributed through the net.
I will get this for sure.

Maybe not a mass market, but deffinately a “CULT” market! I’d buy this for sure! Reminds me of “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow”.

They should have it for paid download. I wouldn’t wait more than a week for a dvd that was hyped solely on the internet.

You guys should really see their first full feature movie Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning, which is a star trek/babylon 5 parody. It was released at their website and you could download it for free or buy a dvd with small payment.
I emailed you guys about it when it was released in 2004 but nobody responded sigh..

I love the production design. Original premise. Looks promising. I would much rather see something like this on a big screen though.

The problem with movies like these is the same as webcomics. How do you make money on these films in a way that can compete with the big companies?

Webcomics are offering better careers to their creators than syndicated strips are getting. And there are more successful career webcomic artists who still have the rights to their work than syndicated artists.
Somewhat of a flaw to your theory there Frank.

Of course they couldn’t charge for the Star Trek film because that would be a violation of copyright. They only charged for the cost of burning a DVD, printing a cover and the shipping if you ordered a disc from them.
This however will be different and if the film is good I’m pretty sure they will be able sell it abroad for a regular release. There are plenty of people out there who will never know about this film unless it’s released in stores.
