Captain America Casting Rumour: Matthew McConaughey

Right on the heels of the announcement of Marvel’s lineup into 2011 the rumour mill is already churning. The first of those rumours is that Matthew McConaughey is being considered to play Captain America.

/Film reports:

Matthew McConaughey is Marvel Studio’s top choice to play the lead role in Captain America, which is currently scheduled to hit theaters on May 6th 2011. I’m sure that a contract has not-yet-been-signed, especially considering the project was only officially announced yesterday morning. What this all means is that nothing is set in stone.

I think this could be a perfect fit. People will say that Cap needs to be a bigger guy, but McConaughey is pretty damned buff. And he has the good old American good looks and charm to pull of the spandex boyscout.

However I am certain that they will have to do something different with the outfit. No Superhero film in the last decade and a half has bothered to try spandex as an outfit (except Superman & Spidey – but you don’t touch that) but they have been close. The molded neoprene digs like Batman and Robin or even Daredevil have been the going rate of style lately.

I hope that the fan expectations that Captain America: The First Avenger will be filmed in WWII with a more classic era Captain fighting the Red Skull. Or at least start it out in that era. Then with the planned Avengers movie months later, reveal a cleaner more modern armoured Cap instead of the Star Spangled Pajamas.

But considering Matthew McConaughey, I would actually prefer to see him as Thor. Maybe its just the hair.

  1. VIGGO MORTENSEN,,,,he is an amazing actor…..lord of the rings,,, Hidalgo……and he looks the part maybe just lift a little bit more but hollywood can hire him a body builder

  2. Bailey Chase would make a great Captain America. He has the perfect looks and physique. Plus he’s a proven actor in a number of strong roles. What do others think?

  3. No to McConaughey and yes to Thomas Jane, I mean come he is the perfect choice to play Capt. he doesn’t have an accent, he’s physically fit and has the look for it. If you seen Deep Blue Sea Thomas Jane is in it and his hair is blonde and he definitley can pull off the Steve Rogers look.
    DOES ANYBODY AGREE WITH ME?

  4. I am aware of this just poking fun at the way he talks. I just don’t see them making an accurate representation of the character in a live action Hollywood film. Don’t get me wrong I’m still gonna see it, but I think they really should think these idea’s through and really find a way to stay true to the character and the story. Cause sometimes they try, but fail. but this is just one average guys opinion, don’t put me on a cross if whatever I’m saying is completely wrong (I wouldn’t doubt if it was, hah)

  5. Chris, I hate to tell ya but “this country” has every language on the planet represented in some form or another.

The point is that he has to speak “Hollywood” english. Not a dialect or slang.

    Just sayin.

  6. The way I see it, I totally agree with you Rodney, if the guy can pull off an american accent, then they should go for it. Not only that he also has to look the part. To be completely honest McConaughey does look the part, but his voice just pisses me off. His whole stuck up southern accent sounds nothing like Captain America.

The person to play the Cap. has to have that Confident, all American voice. not some redneck talk that only half of the country is going to know what he’s saying. “Hey Yall, We goina here fight thisem War.” Excuse me, but we don’t speak redneck could please say that in English, you know the one language that we speak in this country.

All in all, I think McConaughey is a bad choice.

  7. Thomas Jane from The Punisher to play Captain America he is the only one I think could fit the part. He has the look for it and the look of a leader for the Avengers movie.

  8. Scott Speedman of the Underworld movies and The Strangers is the best fit, he’s not a huge star so he shouldn’t garner a huge pay check like Brad Pitt or the 2 Matthews, He’s in great shape and he looks the part. What u guys think?

  9. A character should never be forced to be American just because of a political climate. an actor who will perfectly fit to play the part. The character’s look is iconic and I agree that it should remain. I have never stated otherwise.

But to insist that he has to have been born in the US is a very narrow point of view. There are very qualified english speaking actors with the physique and presence to pull off this role that were not born in the US. So you would prefer a second rate weaker actor from NY CIty than someone more qualified from Australia? (who clearly can pull off the generic Hollywood US accent) If they are better fitted and they pass on them because of their birthplace alone, I would have nothing but doubts about the direction of the movie.

Mstrpattern, If you have been reading this site you will see that we rarely have commenters that will always agree with what we say. That’s the beauty of what we do here. You are allowed to disagree and discuss.

I can be convinced to see something differently with a solid arguement, but I will not change my point of view or opinion on a topic simply because I want to satisfy my ego to be “liked” by the readers of this site. Nor do I take up opposing views just to argue.

  10. ENOUGH WITH THIS McConaughey SHMANAUGHEY.
Not for the part – For the part.
It’s up to the producers, writers and directors anyway.
If the movie won’t make it in the box office, they could make another one anyway. People are putting hype with this actors who’s good to play the part and not, whatever. As if our choice will weigh in the production’s decision.
Just put in Mike Myers as Captain America, Eh. Ha Ha Ha.

  11. I have to agree that in able for the movie to make magic you have to pull the audience and to do that, the production needs an actor who will perfectly fit to play the part.
To answer you Rodney about your question “WHY” — With all the things that’s going on right now in this country is a good reason enough why it should be an American to play the part. Hiding the accent just won’t do, the actor have to have a charisma of patriotism for the country and for the American Soldiers hence Captain America.
Rodney Rodney -DUDE- I’ve read the blogs and there seems to be quite a lot who doesn’t agree with you, man. If you keep pushing people to picture Captain America be played by unfit actors the Movie won’t be any good. So just picture them playing other heroic parts. Thor actually is not from earth, how about that. Lets just all get along.

  12. ViceVersa…. I said “Granted he is going to be Caucasian”.

That means Harold and Kumar are out.. any any nonwhite actor is going to be out too. Thats what Caucasian means.

But why does he have to be born in the US. If he can do the accent then I dont see the issue. He can’t be from the UK? Canada? Australia?

Why does he have to be an American Citizen just to pretend to be Captain America.

  13. Maybe he’s got Sponge Bob to play Captain America.
Seriously, Guys if you don’t know any marvel characters and all you know is watch a movie and hope for a popular actor to play a part, search the net first and read about some of these super awesome Marvel Super Heroes. Popularity has nothing to do with the movie. If you let a good director who doesn’t know anything about the character or an overly buff actor who doesn’t know how to act or a very good actor but doesn’t come close to the alter ego of the Super Hero the movie will suffer. Hulk with Eric Bana, Batman with George Clooney and Superman by Bryan Singer are good examples where half of those who watch them were left disappointed.

  14. Oh my Gosh, Damon doesn’t even fit the height requirement not to mention that his face is to square and young looking. Although, Damon can be a good James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes also known as “Winter Soldier”.
Now for those of you who doesn’t even know who he is, PLEASE educate or familiarize yourselves with the Marvel Superheroes characters before recommending any actors who doesn’t even come close to these characters.
Make sure you have a single Marvel Comics and know a thing or two about any Marvel Characters and their background. PLEASE stop making silly suggestion and read some Marvel Comics and get to know the Marvel Heroes and their background first.

Damon is a perfect candidate and will have enough time to prep for the “Invaders” as “Winter Soldier”. You guys don’t worry he’ll get his chance to play a Marvel Hero.
    Few more things:
Brad Pitt is their top choice for Thor (Karl Urban is much better though)
and as for Captain America –> NO NO NO NO NO to McConaughey.

    Rodney,
would you rather see a guy with Russian accent or an Asian playing Captain America. Oh, what about “Harold” or “Kumar”. LOL C’mon.
About Matthew Lillard, I can’t believe you saw that movie Scooby-Do . Haven’t you seen him at all playing other parts? He was at: The Groomsmen (2006), Area 57 (2007) he played Col. Steven Isaac, even in “Wicker Park” (2004) a movie before your favorite Scooby-Do.
Now, who’s narrow minded, you can’t even see past Scooby-Do.

  15. That is pretty narrow minded to insist that Captain America be American born. The role should be decided by who has the acting ability and appearance to pull off the role.

Granted he is going to be Caucasian, but to insist that he be BORN in the US is unnecessary.

Matthew Lillard? He might be 6’3″ but he is also 200lbs. Beanpole weakling and slacker goofball. You think the guy who played Shaggy on Scooby Doo should be Captain America? That would be the WORST casting ever.

  16. Whoever’s going to play Captain America should not be over exposed like Matthew McConaughey or Brad Pitt. John Cena doesn’t even know how to act. The actor should know how to act, be a fresh face and PLEASE let it be American and not Canadian actor or from other country. Also, Captain America should be at least 6’1″ and not shorter than that.
May I suggest one of the following?:
    Josh Hartnett–> 6′ 3″ (21 July 1978, San Francisco, California),
    Charlie O’Connell–> 6′ 3″ (21 April 1975, New York, New York),
    Ryan McPartlin–> 6′ 3″ (3 July 1975, Chicago, Illinois)
    Joe Michael Burke –> 6′ 2″ (7 September 1973, Illinois, USA),
    Josh Duhamel–>6′ 3½” (14 November 1972, Minot, North Dakota),
    Eric William Dane–> 6′ 1″ (9 November 1972, San Francisco, CA),
    Noah Wyle–> 6′ 2″ (4 June 1971, Hollywood, California,),
    Tom Everett Scott–> 6′ 2″ (7 September 1970, Massachusetts), and /or
    Matthew Lillard–> 6′ 3″ (24 January 1970, Lansing, Michigan)

  17. It won’t be Chris Evans, Aaron Eckhart or Thomas Jane because they’ve already played comic book characters. Marvel would most likely not want to cross the streams with two characters and probably wouldn’t want an actor who has already played a baddie in the DC universe. Cena and McConaughey’s downfall is that they are just two well known to be seen as anything but John Cena or Matthew McConaughey in a Captain America suit. They need to go with an unknown or little known actor. I nomintate this guy:

    http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2728293/

  18. I’d kinda like to see Aaron Eckhart just because he looks so wholesome and “all American”, but I’d really like to see Micheal Bay direct for two reasons: 1. The man knows action and 2. He’s one of the few directors that will do patriotism well and actually sell it.

  19. Two other possibilities:

Damian Lewis – already played a war hero. So far, my favorite choice. He could pull off that sense of duty that Cap gives off. Also, I could see him as a former art student.

Viggo Mortensen – gives off a great sense of leadership

    1. I agree 100% viggo mortensen would be the best…..he has the strong serious face….looks the part…..and has that leadership you speak of……i mean look at him in Lord of the Rings no one was going to fuck with him

  20. Not my first choice (I’d go for a lesser known actor, like JP Davis of ‘Fighting Tommy Riley’) but I would not complain if Matt did sign on.

I think there could be a loose way of getting around the costume. Like using Cap as more of a propaganda piece. There seems to be definition in some of the costume, like ‘scales’….

…the “traditional” outfit may be better, since it more “jacket” like…
okay. So what the heck can we do about A on the forehead?…

…at least Red Skull (Gonz Otto or Til Schweiger) can just have “an accident” and his scarred face “looks”like a red skull….

    ….DAMN this is hard.

  21. DirkAnger23

    ON the money

lol earlier this year i sayd thomas jane would be perfect for it- i mean hes got that thing i cant explain about him that makes him look tough as shit. no flying required hes just got that “touch me and ill stab you” thing about him. i totally agree with you dude hed be perfect were he a tinzy bit bigger

but he already did the punisher and yaty yata yata. suuucks…

  22. Rodney

okay. hes got it all phisically. but the one thing he needs is that serious face that intimidates people and the presense of captain america- hes like the main marvel character thats the main piece of the puzzle. hes the one no one wants to fuck with. for some reason even though he doesnt turn into a big green monster or shoots plasma mortal blasts- soemthing about him makes him feared. and whoever plays captain america has have to have that presense.
i cant explain it but i know what im talking about.

now you know more about actors then i do so you know this guy more. from what IVE seen from him he doesnt have that at all.

  23. I sure did say it with a straight face. Cena could do it I think. He was OK in The Marine, no better or worse than most action movie stars.

Makes me wonder though what type of film they will make. If it’s patriotic drivel the studio can pretty much kiss overseas revenues goodbye.
Something called Captain America would be a pretty hard sell for anyone who isn’t from the states. Especially since we already have Team America that makes fun of the core concept of the Capt.

  24. I defnitly need to say no to Matthew McConaughey, I just don’t see him as Cap.

Personally I think the best would be

    Brad Pitt or
    Daniel Craig

  25. hey git punch plz tell me you were joking about cena being a half decent actor. he has no acting skills whatsoever, hes not even a good wrestler

  26. “However I am certain that they will have to do something different with the outfit. No Superhero film in the last decade and a half has bothered to try spandex as an outfit (except Superman & Spidey – but you don’t touch that) but they have been close. The molded neoprene digs like Batman and Robin or even Daredevil have been the going rate of style lately.”

The batman suit wasn’t too bad. But the worst thing about the X-Men movies was the costumes.

  27. i dont mind McConaughey, i enjoy wantching him, but i cant take Michael C. Hall from my mind since i read someone suggesting him on a forum. i know he dont have the fisical presence that MM has, but a few months on a gym can change that.

ps: i also like Thomas Jane, as DIRKANGER suggested, but i guess he cross my mind as we already saw him as punisher
(sorry about the gramar and all that, i’m from spain)

  28. So if they get a good looking guy its all about the female audience.

McConaughey is a fine actor and can pull out the stops when he wants to. Unfortunately for him, he doesnt care and will take a job just to further finance his free wheeling lifestyle.

Hopefully if this rumour rings true (remember it is a rumour) I hope he takes it seriously. Then it would be solid gold.

  29. Upon further review, Thomas Jane would be the most prototypical Captain America. He’s definitely got the look, and the guy can act without the inclusion of a Soutern drawl which I think would be totally distracting, not that I don’t like McConaughey, but the Southern thing would just totally take me out of the character. In a perfect world though, I would like to see Neal McDonough from Band of Brothers. He’s got the chops, the look, and the idea of a slightly older, take-no-shit Cap for the rest of the Avengers to follow and lead them into battle is exactly what i think they need.

  30. I don’t like it. I don’t really know why, but I just don’t.
I know that McConaughey is a rather solid actor, but his last movies were horrible, cynical, only-in-it-for-the-money-kind of productions and I just don’t like this guy anymore.
I also don’t want his surfer, take it easy dude-attitude to be brought to Cap. Steve Rogers is a serious guy, he’s not a jokster and playboy like Tony Stark.
I want Ryan Gosling or Chris Evans to be Captain America.

  31. maybe because most of those films you mentioned where he actually acted were a long time ago & he’s opted for doing lameass romcoms for a paycheck & playing his bongos. i’d rather he ruined Magnum than Cap.

  32. I’m on the fence with this casting choice. I really do enjoy Matthew when he is playing a REAL role; not some sterotype of a guy in a RomCom. He definitely has the build to play a superhero and he’s in terrific shape, so he’d be believable kicking ass.
When he chooses a serious role to play he pulls it off, but I think lately a lot of people just see him as the RomCom guy. I have to admit his acting is horrible in those types of movies.

  33. This would be a FANTASTIC casting choice. First of all, physically he’s totally perfect for the role. Secondly, Anyone who ever tries to say this guy isn’t a solid actor has either never seen Frailty, Amistad, Contact or We Are Marshall, or are just willfully letting their bias cloud their judgment. (It’s all subjective, but I’ve never understood the hate for this guy)

  34. worst casting choice ever. I guess they are going for the female audience because anyone that cares about the character knows that he is not a good fit for the character at all.

  35. McConaughey as Cap……not bad, but then again nobody else really comes to mind on that one. As far as Thor goes though, I gotta admit that there is one relatively unknown guy that I always thought looked the part when I saw him on TV on Jericho. His name is Brad Beyer and he played Stanley on the show. He’s a pretty big dude who’s almost a dead ringer for the Norse God. Here’s a pic at http://www.imdb.com/media/rm170498560/tt0805663

  36. I concur with Sir Jig-a-lot

He’s a nice guy and all, but the whole side talking southern accent on every character doesn’t cut it for Capt. America.
