‘Hitman’ To Have An “R” Rating

Posted by on 12. 10. 2007in News Chat

hitman.jpgA few days ago, head honcho here at TMB, John Campea posted a story about how the movie ‘Hitman‘ was being tamed down from an R rating to a friendly PG-13 rating when it’s released in theatres.  Although everybody can relax, (for now) because it looks like things have changed and ‘Hitman’ will indeed be an “R” rated film. (YES!)

Thompson on Hollywood Gives Us This:

A source close to the project and a Fox rep both confirmed that director Xavier Gens is still on board, and the movie will absolutely come out with an R rating. Sources say it will most likely be a “hard R,” in fact. Which makes sense, since turning intense action game Hitman into a PG-13 movie would be like making a PG-13 biopic about Paris Hilton: What’s the point?

I’m one of those people who hate when movies that deserve to be rated R are rated PG-13.  It’s usually only cut that way to attract more viewers and more money. (Jesus, if I wanted to watch an R rated movie get butchered, I’d watch it on TBS or FOX television)  The movie is entitled ‘Hitman’ for god’s sakes! Anyone who has played the game knows how VIOLENT it is, so why tone down the VIOLENCE when the audience expects the brutality, the gore, and the blood in the first place?

So people under 18 without a guardian can’t see it. Big whoop!  The games are rated M (for Mature) anyways! (I don’t think all gamers are teenagers anymore anyways)  Besides tons of R rated movies make large money in the box office, so I never understood the whole “let’s make the movie PG-13 to make more money” issue.  I for one am I happy that they are keeping the film in its original state.  What’s your thoughts on this issue?

Personally, I’m not interested in movies that are derived from games. Or in games, period. I do like films that are rated R because they deal with adult themes, by whi8ch I do not mean stupid, sadistic crap. A movie can be ruined by being pushed into a rating. However, you fail to analyze the reason why some films are forced to get a PG-13 rating. If teenagers area large part of the potential audience of a genre and most of the teenagers are not allowed in theaters, who would invest money in that movie? Only an amateur, which is to say; no one who knows what he or she is doing. People distribute movies to make money.

“I’m one of those people who hate when movies that deserve to be rated R are rated PG-13.”

I think everyone but SOME studio execs are those kind of people. ;-)

  3. stephen says:

    Yes! :)

Thank you whomever made this happen. I’ll see it in theaters now.

  4. Steven Carroll says:

Thank GOD!!!! Somebody with common sense works at the studios. A movie about murdering people should NOT be PG-13.

  5. Kristina says:

Good. The kills will probably be the only entertaining thing in this flick, so they better be R-rated kills.

  6. Thomas says:

YES!!!!! Cool beans. I love the game and am very happy about this. I’m even pretty much over Strathom not being cast as 47.

  7. While the news from the other day made little no sense at all, and most likely was a mis-interpetation on a internet source or two (or even perhaps a made up rumor that folks picked up on and took as gospel) …it is a mild relief at best that this film will still be the R film and not the toned down one.

not that it really matters with the price of peas
the trailer still looks stupid, video games to film still has a bad battering average, and I’m not lining up to see it.

  8. DarkKinger says:

Finally, someone gets it! I mean, I understand its a video game movie (Life Face #3: they all suck, no offense), but I couldn’t understand the idea of why Hitman (Rated-M) should be PG-13 when Resident Evil (ALSO Rated-M) was Rated-R, and all THREE movies made money!

As much as the focus could be teens, and PG-13 can help attract more of them, I have seen pleanty of them while I watched Matrix Reloaded. Hell, I was one of them! And with all due respect to PG-13; having that rating for AVP doesn’t seem right (made Aliens and Predators look tame: THEY’RE SCARY MOTHERFUCKERS, dammit!).

Anyways, I have no clue how the movie will work out. Chances are that it will suck hard. But, can a Rated-R attract the die-hards who enjoyed the game’s violent aspect? Maybe not. I really hope one day, someone breaks this curse of shitty video game movies, because I can really see games like Gears of War turn into a good film (if given the proper treatment, not halfassed).

  9. TheFlyingWorm says:

The game was alright, but this movie I will give 10 thumbs down. 2 for the movie, and 8 for the guy that thought this would be a great idea. What a douche. I mean, how original could it be? What cliches will we see in this one?

  10. TheFlyingWorm says:

Oh yea, as far as it being rate “r”, I’m all for it. I wish all movies were NC-17 to be quite honest. Even kids movies. I don’t like that TONED DOWN SHIT. I love the word Fuck repeated over and over in my movies. People should say it even when there is absolutely no reason to say it. I also want a lot of bodily harm inflicted on the enemy, I want it be so realitic that I think I am watching a documentary. Unless I just don’t feel like it, then I’ll watch Half-Baked. I know it sounds ridiculous. Well I am a ridiculous person.

  11. dark_venom says:

that good news i’m excited about this movie and cant wait to see it. and it’s good to see an r rating since the game is voilent as hell.

  12. Kenneth says:

I’m not really holding out that much hope for the film, but this is good news.

  13. Oh yes! Good wins over evil… or something.

thats how happy i am now!!!!!

  15. Andrew says:

Who cares, really? The movie is bound to suck anyway, being a video game movie.

  16. Jim says:

You guys know that the studio chiefs don’t set the ratings. But they can have it in the film makers’ contract that they have to get a certain rating.

I don’t want to see a movie that shows a one sheet like the HITMAN – abussive to women. I’m glad that most people here seem to share my taste regarding games – no offense meant to John.

  17. Christopher Edwards says:

This movie from the start has sounded bad to me casting the wrong man for lead filming so close to the release date and that they have to bring in another editor to cut it back, i dont think if they got the worlds best editor for the film it wont make it as bad as it is

  18. Dave says:

So they were not trying to make a PG13 flick instead. Most important question now is why the director got fired in the first place….?!

  19. Horace says:

I liked Head Honcho better, when Cinema Blend started calling their owner that… 5 years ago. ;)

  20. linhuck says:

A violent film should never be rated as PG-13 just to attract more sales, it’s an adult film with adult themes and should be adult rated.

  21. darkbhudda says:

Hmm. Why can’t they release both versions into cinemas? Finally settle the debate about which sells more.

I just wanted to say that I was happy to read these comments, and so I want to show my appreciation to those I read. You each made gave me more reason to smile. Also, an additional shout out to Soulvideo who unknowingly spoke my mind on the Wednesday NowLive show last week.

  23. Mykrantz says:

@21, Most people (i.e. – not the people who frequent movie fan sites) can’t even tell you who the main actor in a movie is unless it is Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, or Brad Pitt and often come stumbling into the theater after the previews looking for 4 seats together that aren’t in the front row. You want movie theaters to give these people a choice in which ‘cut’ of a movie to see? They will go to which ever showing is closer to the time they get to the theater.

    Back to the main topic:
I agree that Hitman will still be cheesy (along the lines of the Resident Evil movies), but I will go see it in theaters as long as it is R-rated, because it is the type of movie that needs to be seen on a huge screen with a kick-ass sound system turned up to 11.
