Netflix WWE Monday Night Raw: CM Punk Shocks Sami Zayn in Chicago

WWE Raw arrived in Chicago on Monday night with major SummerSlam implications and a championship main event that dramatically changed the landscape of the company.

The July 7 edition of Netflix WWE Monday Night Raw featured Seth Rollins addressing Roman Reigns, developments within The Vision, continued SummerSlam buildup, and a shocking Undisputed WWE Championship change in the show’s closing moments.

Seth Rollins Opens Raw

The show began with news that Gunther had attacked Cody Rhodes backstage, creating uncertainty surrounding Rhodes’ scheduled Undisputed WWE Championship rematch against Sami Zayn later in the evening.

Seth Rollins then addressed his upcoming SummerSlam showdown with Roman Reigns. Rollins questioned Reigns’ legacy and argued that their match would determine whether greatness is earned through hard work or handed to someone because of opportunity.

LA Knight interrupted the segment and challenged the narrative surrounding Rollins and Reigns. The exchange ended with Rollins promising Knight a future championship opportunity if he defeats Reigns at SummerSlam. Moments later, Jimmy Uso blindsided Knight with a superkick.

Earlier in the show, WWE officials determined that Cody Rhodes was not medically cleared to compete, forcing a change to the scheduled championship match.

That opened the door for a surprise return by CM Punk, who challenged Sami Zayn for the Undisputed WWE Championship in front of a hometown Chicago crowd.

The main event delivered a highly competitive contest with Zayn pushing Punk to the limit. The champion even utilized elements of Punk’s offense in an attempt to retain the title. Result: CM Punk defeated Sami Zayn to win the Undisputed WWE Championship.

What’s Next?

Meanwhile, The Vision added tag team gold to its collection, Oba Femi continued building momentum ahead of Hell in a Cell, and several Intercontinental Championship contenders positioned themselves for next week’s gauntlet match.
