The popular book series Last Kids on Earth is heading to live-action. Disney+ and Disney Channel have officially ordered a pilot for the new adaptation, bringing the story of monster-fighting teens to a new format.
The project is being developed by Chad Fiveash and James Stoteraux, who serve as writers and co-creators. The duo previously worked together on Gotham Knights. Kevin Tancharoen, known for his work on The Book of Boba Fett and The Brothers Sun, is set to direct the pilot.
A New Take on the Apocalypse
The story follows a group of teenagers in the town of Wakefield who must band together after monsters and zombies overrun their home. The group transforms a treehouse into a fortified headquarters to survive the apocalypse and eventually work to stop the end of the world. The series is based on the bestselling books written by Max Brallier.
This marks a return to the screen for the franchise. An animated version of The Last Kids on Earth previously premiered on Netflix in 2019. That animated iteration ran for three seasons before concluding in 2020.
Moving the property to a live-action format on Disney platforms suggests a significant push to reintroduce the characters to a wider audience. Given the success of the source material, fans of the books will likely be watching closely to see how the production team translates the high-stakes action and humor into a live-action setting.
