Celebrating National CROWN Day
Dove and the CROWN Coalition are set to observe the seventh annual National CROWN Day on July 3. Also known as Black Hair Independence Day, the date commemorates the inaugural signing of the first CROWN Act in 2019. The legislation, which stands for Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair, aims to outlaw race-based hair discrimination in workplaces and K-12 public and charter schools.
Spotlighting New Voices
This year, the campaign features a new social content series titled CROWN-icles. The series stars 7-year-old music sensation and creator Van Van, who conducts interviews with members of the Women’s National Football Conference and various young leaders from HBCUs and dance teams. The content is part of a broader effort to engage the next generation in the movement.
The celebration also includes a nationwide call to action for social media users to share #CROWNLove. Additionally, the initiative invites newscasters across the country to participate in the Natural Hair on Air campaign, which encourages them to wear their natural hair while broadcasting.
Advancing the Movement
Since the formation of the CROWN Coalition in 2019, the movement has seen significant progress. To date, 30 states and over 50 municipalities have enacted the CROWN Act or legislation inspired by it. Despite these milestones, the coalition continues to advocate for further legislative change to ensure equitable and inclusive experiences for Black consumers.
Dove will also maintain its presence at the ESSENCE Festival of Culture in New Orleans, where it will host an immersive booth experience. Those interested in supporting the cause can learn more about the movement and sign the official petition at the official Dove website.
