A new horror project is officially in the works as Brian Duffield and Zach Cregger have signed on to develop Siren Head for Warner Bros. The upcoming film, which follows a competitive bidding war for the rights, will be directed by Duffield based on a script he is co-writing with Cregger.
The project is based on the viral horror phenomenon created by Canadian artist Trevor Henderson. First introduced in 2018, the creature is a towering, emaciated humanoid known for blending into rural environments and emitting distorted audio broadcasts to lure its prey. The character gained significant mainstream attention in 2020 through various social media platforms and content creators, eventually becoming a staple of internet horror culture.
Bringing Internet Horror to the Big Screen
The collaboration between Duffield and Cregger brings together two prominent voices in modern genre filmmaking. Duffield is known for his work on No One Will Save You, while Cregger gained widespread acclaim for his breakout horror hit Barbarian. Their involvement suggests a high-profile approach to adapting the digital-first property for a theatrical audience.
Beyond the creative team, the production will feature a robust group of producers, including Roy Lee, Andrew Childs, and Scott Glassgold. Trevor Henderson is also attached to the project as an executive producer to help oversee the adaptation of his creation.
While internet-born horror properties often face challenges when transitioning to traditional film formats, the pedigree of the talent involved indicates that Warner Bros. is looking to capitalize on the massive built-in audience the creature has cultivated over the last several years. It will be interesting to see how the duo translates the meme-based concept into a cohesive feature-length narrative.
