Landing a major superhero role in a massive franchise like the DCU is a career-defining moment, but Milly Alcock kept her celebration refreshingly grounded. The actress, who stars as Kara Zor-El in the new Supergirl film, recently shared the simple way she marked the news.
While speaking at the world premiere of the movie at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Alcock explained that she was in Australia when she received the confirmation. Rather than throwing an extravagant party, she opted for a low-key gathering with her inner circle. She purchased the cheapest champagne available at a local shop and invited her friends over to drink and dance.
A Direct Confirmation from James Gunn
The casting process itself was also surprisingly straightforward. Alcock revealed that James Gunn, the architect of the new DCU, delivered the news via email. While she was thrilled to secure the part, she admitted to finding the method of communication a bit humorous, noting that she would have preferred a phone call for such a significant life event. She acknowledged, however, that Gunn is likely one of the busiest people at DC.
Stepping Into the Role
Alcock first appeared as the character in an end-credits scene for the recent Superman film, which helped set the stage for her standalone project. Reflecting on the character of Kara Zor-El, the actress noted that she found a personal connection to the role. She expressed that she related to the character’s struggle to process complex emotions and the way individuals can sometimes get in their own way.
