James Gunn Confirms ‘Man of Tomorrow’ Timeline and Lex Luthor’s Role

James Gunn has given fans a clear picture of the Man of Tomorrow DCU timeline, confirming that the sequel unfolds roughly two years after the events of Superman (July 2025). The timing sets the stage for a prison-bound Lex Luthor and a looming Brainiac threat.

The director, James Gunn, answered a Threads query by stating the gap is ‘basically real time.’ With David Corenswet returning as Clark Kent, the story will see Superman forced to team up with his longtime nemesis Lex Luthor, portrayed by Nicholas Hoult, against the alien menace Brainiac (Lars Eidinger).

Why the Two-Year Jump Matters

Superman’s July 2025 release and the July 9, 2027 debut of Man of Tomorrow mean Lex Luthor will have spent about two years behind bars. That confinement gives the character ample time to plot his next move, potentially turning his imprisonment into a strategic advantage.

Connecting the DCU Dots

The timeline aligns with other Chapter One projects. Supergirl (June 26, 2027) slots between Superman and Man of Tomorrow, allowing Kara Zor-El her own development before joining the larger ensemble. HBO’s Lanterns (premiering August 16, 2027) spans 2016 and 2026, acting as both a prequel and present-day story within the same universe.

What Remains Unexplored

While the film focuses on Superman, Lex, Supergirl, John Stewart, and Brainiac, it offers no indication that it will address the fate of Peacemaker’s Christopher Smith, who was left stranded on the alien world Salvation at the end of season two. Gunn has confirmed no plans for a third season, leaving Smith’s future an open question.

Overall, the clarified timeline helps fans map out the next two years of DC storytelling, highlighting how each piece fits into a cohesive, real-time progression.
