One Battle After Another is the kind of film that refuses to sit still. It is wild, it is layered, and it is packed with moments that land differently depending on the world you walk in from. When I sat down with Regina Hall and breakout star Chase Infiniti, it became clear that this movie has grown and shifted right along with the times. What felt sharp during filming now hits with a whole new weight.
The world changed, and suddenly the movie felt like it changed with it.
The Story That Is Bigger Than Its Politics
When I asked Regina how she describes the movie to friends who are not film nerds, she did not hesitate. She called it a father-daughter story surrounded by a whole lot of beautiful chaos. Chase offered the action comedy angle, but even she admitted it is nearly impossible to sum this movie up in one sentence.
They both laughed about how impossible it is to explain the film without underselling it. That is part of the appeal. The unexpected tone, the mix of heart and absurdity, and the emotional core all work together to create something you do not see every day.
“It is a father daughter story with a lot of other stuff around it.” Regina said it with a smile, but she meant every word.
The Scene That Hits Different Now
Because the film was written and shot long before some of the political madness we are sitting in today, I asked them both if any scene feels different in 2025 than it did on set.
Regina jumped right in. For her, the shift is immediate in the opening mission with the French 75. She also pointed to the Christmas Adventurers, a group in the film whose ideology looks a little too familiar now.
Chase agreed. Even though she is not in those scenes, she talked about how surreal it is watching them today, knowing how close they sit to the current climate.
“It is absurd, but Paul lets you walk away with the reality without walking away with anger.”
Regina said that line, and it might be the best thesis statement the movie has ever had.
The Conversation Audiences Are Not Having Enough
A lot of viewers walk away talking about the politics, revolution themes, or the Leo of it all. So I asked them what they wish audiences noticed more.
Regina pointed to a moment where Leo’s character talks about history and teaching everything, not just the comfortable parts. Chase highlighted Sensei’s world and the community he creates in his corner of the film, a tight circle of characters who take care of one another in a way that sticks with you long after the movie ends.
“There is a sense of community in that part of the film that I love.”
The Fan Interpretations They Never Saw Coming
I asked if any fan reactions surprised them. Regina did not even blink.
“People keep asking me if Deandra was a rat.”
She cracked up telling the story, and her answer was quick. No. Absolutely not.
Chase has not been hit with any truly wild interpretations yet, but she is enjoying the range of conversations happening around the movie. She likes that everyone seems to latch onto something different.
The Backstory That Never Made It to Screen
To close out our conversation, I asked Chase about the behind the scenes character work she built with Paul Thomas Anderson. She revealed that Willa’s mixed martial arts background shaped far more than the choreography. It influenced the way Willa carries herself, how fast she responds to danger, and even how she mirrors Perfidia.
“There are things you do not outwardly see, but they came from those conversations.”
It was a perfect way to end, because it mirrors the whole film. One Battle After Another works on the surface as a wild ride, but beneath it sits a whole world of choices, details, and emotional currents the audience only senses.
And that is why it hits even harder today.
