Marvel’s Blade Movie: Is the Vampire Reboot Finally Happening?

The long-anticipated Blade movie from Marvel Studios has experienced more delays than a vampire sunrise. But now, fans have fresh hope that the reboot, first announced in 2019 with Mahershala Ali in the title role, is finally gaining momentum.

Mahershala Ali: Still On Board

Although Mahershala Ali has only had a brief voice cameo in Eternals, sources confirm that he is still committed to the project. Ali’s enthusiasm for playing Marvel’s vampire hunter remains high, and the character fits perfectly into Marvel’s emerging supernatural lane alongside Moon Knight and Werewolf by Night. At the recent Jurassic World premiere, Mahershala Ali spoke to Variety on the topic and was brief but clear:

“Call Marvel,” Ali said at the New York premiere of his new film “Jurassic World Rebirth.” The actor kept his answer brief when asked when “Blade” production could start. “I’m ready. Let them know I’m ready.”

Blade’s Rocky Development History

Since Marvel announced Ali’s casting at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, the project has seen numerous writers and directors enter and exit. Initially scheduled for a 2025 release, the film’s date has quietly disappeared from Marvel’s updated calendar. Despite that, behind-the-scenes chatter suggests the project is still alive, if not quite kicking yet.

Creative differences and script rewrites have plagued development. Marvel’s high standards and interconnected universe model likely played a role in the delays, as did the evolving tone of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which is expanding into darker, more horror-inspired themes.

David S. Goyer Comments on Blade

One voice offering insight into Blade’s future is screenwriter David S. Goyer, best known for writing the original Wesley Snipes Blade trilogy. In a recent interview with Variety, Goyer confirmed that he had reached out to Marvel to offer his assistance on the reboot.

While Marvel politely declined his offer, saying they believe they “have it under control”, Goyer remains optimistic. “If they ever wanted to bring me in, I’d be open,” he said. His confidence in the brand and the character’s potential hasn’t wavered, and fans of the original trilogy still credit Goyer with shaping Blade into a cinematic cult icon.

What We Know So Far

Marvel Studios has not officially confirmed a new release date or director. However, industry insiders suggest a restructured approach is underway. Blade’s role in future MCU phases may extend beyond one standalone film. Crossovers and team-ups with supernatural or horror-themed characters are likely in the works.

With renewed internal confidence and fan anticipation still burning, the question isn’t whether Blade will return, it’s when.
