Syd Mead Signs On To Design Elysium

Cinema visionary and sci-fi legend Syd Mead has signed on to design the sets of Neill Blomkamp’s next flick Elysium. For those of you who don’t know who Mr. Mead is (shame on you!), he’s the future-mad concept artist who worked on Blade Runner, Tron, Aliens and designed Johnny 5 of Short Circuit (and ehh… cough…. Timecop). “I’ve called science fiction ‘reality ahead of schedule.'” is a great quote from the man. He’s well worth checking out. Not a whole lot is known about Elysium yet, other then it’ll star Matt Damon, Jodie Foster and Sharlto Copley, and that it’s set 100 years in the future.
Now, after District 9, and that Elysium viral trailer (that seriously had my friends scared hahaha), I was already very drawn to it, but with the addition of Syd Mead ramped this film up to another level of “DAMN I need to see this”ness. I’d love if this ends up being another iconic looking sci-fi. Any thoughts?

  1. Syd Mead truly a legend, a visionary, highly referred, respected & decorated concept artiste in our time. The awesomeness of Elysium just gone up couple of notch with the addition of him on design :). Definitely can’t wait to see even a glimpse of props design by him for this movie.

  2. Always loved Syd Meads designs, especially the Spinner from Bladerunner (above). I went on the Disney/MGM Studio tour at Orlando in 1990, and the Spinner was there. It was in very bad shape. Such a shame that it was destroyed several years later. It should have gone to the Smithsonian.
