Mortal Kombat : Rebirth

Finish him! Flawless Victory! Oh…the 90’s. A while back there was a rumor/news about the movie gods trying to reboot Mortal Kombat. Yup, the famous violent video game franchise that became a 1995 movie hit. Well now, a video and it’s maker have been revealed online. This gives us a taste of what the new reboot might look like. The viral video is titled Mortal Kombat : Rebirth.

Latino Review reports:

The short was directed by Kevin Tancharoen, who did the remake of Fame last year. Judging from this short, Kevin is the perfect director for this movie. Jacks is played by Michael Jai White. Michael played Spawn and was in Undisputed II. Michael makes a great Jacks (Jax). Sonya Blade is played by Jeri Ryan, who played Seven of Nine in Star Trek: Voyager. Baraka was played by the very talented Lateef Crowder, who plays the Brazilian fighter in Undisputed III. Scorpion is played by Ian Anthony Dale. Ian plays Kazuya in the upcoming big screen version of Tekken. Johnny Cage was played by up and coming martial arts sensation Matt Mullins. Still working on who played Reptile. Will update when I find out. The fight choreography was done by Larnell Stovall. Larnell did the fight choreography for Undisputed III and is one of the best fight choreographers in the business.

I’m pretty excited about the chances of getting a new Mortal Kombat now. Why? Because I bet the reaction online will be mostly superb. Regarding the actual short: I like the lightning in the scenes. I loved the concept of taking the Mortal Kombat characters and twisting them into a R-rated The Dark Knight/Seven-ish dark mood. If this is the direction they are taking, then I love it. Bring on the blood and guts. The Johnny Cage/Baraka fight choreography was awesome. I hope Kevin (director) gets the chance to inject some new blood into this franchise. I mean, if he did this short film, he can easily surpass Mortal Kombat : Annihilation. Right? Lol.

What do you guys think? Diggin’ the short film/teaser? Would you give this director a shot at it?

  1. I thinks hands down this director has the perfect vision for this film. I like that he made it more realistic, like the batman franchise did with dark knight. Cant wait for the full length movie.

  2. I was a big fan of the lite nature of the first movie. Yes MK is based on an epic battle but the characters from the first movie all had personalities. I hope the stay true to the original.

  3. Honestly I’m a huge fan of the supernatural factor of mortal kombat, but I wud like to see how this human version of turns out.I mean it’s mortal kombat! It’ll always be a hit

  4. This style they decided to take with mortal combat isn’t a very good one. I wouldn’t mind seeing it to see what could become of the characters getting more into there video game forms(if they even get them there), such as having scorpion get into his hellish state where he can blow hellfire, or having baraka’s face mutate more.

But honestly the whole idea of making the concept from a human style perceptive instead of a supernatural one gives mortal combat a lame design.
Baraka being a doctor who eventually stitches 10 inch blades to his arm, or having reptiles story be from childbirth complications, or even taking johnny cage out the movie before the tournament begins, are all elements of the film which would possibly cause some fans of the mortal combat video game style design to not take this short seriously.

I do like the jacks an definitely the Sonya though.

    1. hey guys the short movie rocks stop talking bad things about it it’s a new era and new things are always welcome just wake up from the 90’s i’ts allready 2010 i thing the short film was awsomeeeeeeeee

  5. Jeri Ryan said on kotaku

“Okay, so… Mortal Kombat,” she tweets. “It’s not a game trailer. Actually was made for the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film.”

the WB? the tv station or the studio….

  6. This has nothing to do with whether I like the short or not, but why does almost every police HQ and interrogation room in movies have such poor lighting?

  7. I know this is a short but it was awful. Poor interaction with the characters, and it just felt like silly name-dropping. But an attempt to modernize it would be interesting. Though I think some of the crazier characters shouldn’t be used. Baraka was a demon. And Reptile was a man-lizard. Keep to some of the more realistic characters, I say. This already suggests the lack of any type of magic or anything, so we’ve already lost some of the charm of the originals. This both excites & disappoints me.

  8. This version is horrible. For a fun twist I guess it’s entertaining to those that love blood and guts and the Saw movies, but I can’t stand them. Reptile some psycho murderer who eats heads, are you kidding me. I know mortal Kombat is known for it’s fatalities but even this is just disgusting, reptile is a ninja, so is Scorpion. The only one that I thought I could somewhat see as fitting the psycho killer profile was barraka but I still thought it was pathetic portraying him as a human who put those knive’s into his arms. I hope this would never be the direction Mortal Kombat take’s. This is a very twisted take on the game and it’s rich storyline.

    1. +1000

Also, i don’t know how they expect people to take this “realistic/gritty” version of Mortal Kombat seriously when they give the characters ridiculous “codenames”.

  9. I think this version looks interesting. Like most people I thought the first MK movie was pretty cheesy, but still awesome. I think to get a good MK adaptation you need more time for character development than would be allowed in a movie. But I think a series would be too long, and you would have the problem of the finality when killing off characters when you have a potentially long series run ahead of you.

I think a good way to go would be a serious, violent, and gory 10 episode mini-series on a premium cable channel. This way you could have a lot of time for back story and also be able to kill people off and still keep the audience guessing.

    Just my thoughts.

  10. This was a stupid short. Trying to take a serious, more realistic tone with Mortal Kombat would be dumb and silly over the course of a full feature. I’m just glad this isn’t an actual trailer for the reboot of the film. I hope if there is a reboot they don’t go with this direction. Baraka as a doctor gone insane? Scorpion as a cannibal with a skin disease? Wtf?

  11. I liked the previous Mortal Combat films but this short rocks. Loved the violence & gore, the level of which was missing from the previous films. I think they have the tone right for a rebirth. Although I was cursing remakes/re-imaginings a couple of weeks back, this is one I would be intrested in seeing. Guess that makes me a hypocrit. so be it :)

  12. the first mortal kombat movie was great, idk why so many people hated it the only thing missing was blood and guts and an actual fatility (shang tsungs doesnt count)

    1. I guess I can’t speak on what you heard but I’ve rarely come across anyone talking badly about the first movie. But the second would be better off not existing. I’m talking like E.T. for the Atari not existing.

  13. This looks like a semi-pilot for a tv series which I think would be better direction for the franchise to take. Beat em up movies are a poor idea because there is quite rarely a balance between story telling and fight scenes. A tv series would allow a better platform of using the story telling to lead up to a good fight seen. This looks like it could be a mix of true blood and the dark knight in terms of tone (slightly cheesy but intense). Judging by the actors involved I would think this would be for a tv series. Wait and see, quite clearly something is in the pipe.

    1. I really agree. Movies on fighting games are just about fighting in every scene. Which after 20 minutes is really annoying. The trailer pulled of the ratio a little bit better, but a show could get away with a little more story per episode and a great fight for its climax. Following the characters until to season finally of the “tournament” which could also be scorpions finished quest of killing most members involved. This would be a great 2 season show.
